All Things 2013-2014 Gopher Womens Season Thread

Thanks TJ, I didn't know that's how the women selected their All-Big Ten teams. 11 players named to the 1st team? That's silly. Let's just name everyone All-Big Ten, make everyone happy, and call it a day!

It is absolutely silly. Ribbons for everyone!!!

Good info tj.

Do you know the reason for only having 10 scholarship players?

Not to mention they started the year with only 10 scholarship players. I don't know the particulars but how can you be three short of a full roster? Maybe someone can fill us in.

Actually, it's worse.

Women's basketball still allows 15 scholarships.

One of the spots was Kiana Kellogg's late transfer. I don't know about the others.

There will be 13 scholarship players next year. Ten current minus 2 seniors plus 5 signees.

Wow, I didn't know that. What is the reasoning for the women having two more than the men?

Probably Title IX, the 85 scholarships for football have to be made up some way.

That could be but to me it would make more sense to use two extra scholarships for one of the teams that is giving out numerous partial scholarships.

The thing to remember about 2 all-Big Ten players and no depth is that there are 2 other all-Big Ten players from Minnesota whom the Gophers were not able to recruit, and then there's Tyseanna Johnson SEVEN time freshman of the week in the Big 8/12 from DeLaSalle and Marissa Janning who I believe is PoY in the Big East also from Minnesota….

The lack of depth is quite manifestly due to an inability to keep the best Minnesota girls at home. That's a pretty big black mark on a U of M coach's resume if you ask me.

U Women’s Team Needs Tourney Run

"But Borton and her team need to build momentum in the program by not only winning a couple of NCAA tourney games this month, but also earn major success in the future with plus-.500 Big Ten records. The program has faltered since the glory days of 2003, 2004 and 2005 when Minnesota played in the Sweet 16 twice and Final Four once. The Gophers were 6th in the conference standings this season, certainly an improvement over the previous four years of 11th, 9th and two 8th place finishes."

For Gophers women, NCAA tournament could be just a win away

"The Gophers (19-11, 8-8 Big Ten) have won six of their past eight games and are confident they can get into the NCAA tournament if they beat Wisconsin (10-18, 3-13) in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday in Indianapolis.

It would be the program's first NCAA tournament appearance since the 2008-09 season."

BTT first round

Gophers down 35-21 to Wisconsin at the half....BTN

Wisconsin playing way harder and with more emotion than the Gophers - and with a game plan; imagine that!

Did we try to get Tessa Cichy? If not, huge mistake. I got to see her play a couple times in person when she was at Hill, and her talent just jumped out at you.

Well the good news is this may be a situation where either way we win in some sort of way. Either the Gophers make a comeback in the 2nd half and get a win or the Gophers lose to Wisconsin tonight and that should finish off Borton.

Banham with an unfortunate time to have one of her rare bad games. It's really exposing how terrible the rest of the team is. The other players have been real bad. (Especially Riche). I mean, they can't even catch a chest pass from 10 feet away...

Are the Gophers too slow to play man to man defense , or is there another reason Borton is staying in the zone when the Badgers are shooting the lights out ?

Nice comeback to force overtime. Defense finally showed up, especially on Wisconsin's final possession of regulation.

When I was watching, that was the first time that they defended anyone. Wisconsin could move the ball wherever they wanted.

I literally don't know how they did it, but the Gophers came up with a clutch overtime win over Wisconsin to save their season and very likely give them a birth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 5 years.

EDIT: Minnesota 74 Wisconsin 68 (OT) *FINAL*

It is always nice to beat the skunks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Banham with one of her worst games this year, but manages to be big down the stretch. She finished with 22 PTS and 7 AST.

I was flipping between state hockey and the womens game and was a little surprised but also glad to see the late comeback because it just seemed like the Gophers couldn't sustain any momentum.

Yeah, it was pretty ugly for a long time there. Lots of easy drives to the basket when they weren't burying open threes. Bowed up in the stretch run though, and Wisky missed a few free throws to help out.

I believe Banham and Noga both played all 45 minutes - going to be tough coming back in 22 hours.

I agree with the TV crew - Wisconsin played not to lose.

Yowie just does not get in anyone's way on defense, and she does not like to bang inside. She has some toughening up to do.
