Where does he get this [stuff]?!?

I knew he was following me around.

Edit: Now on a serious note, besides Carlie Wagner how good is the rest of Borton's recruiting class? Is it good enough to help her keep her job?

I'd say, with Wagner as an exception, the class is more quantity than quality.

Whalen just signed an extension to make her one of the highest paid players in the WNBA.
I don't know where Charlie W a -Wa gets this stuff.

I don't know where Charlie W a -Wa gets this stuff.

On Whalen:
"Although terms of the deal weren't disclosed, it is likely a three-year extension. The WNBA maximum salary for a player with four years of league tenure is $107,000."
http://www.twincities.com/lynx/ci_24032054/minnesota-lynx-sign-lindsay-whalen-contract-extension

Whalen overseas:
"That should mean her monthly salary is 40.000$ which should add-up to about 260.000$ on the season."
http://lovewomensbasketball.com/201...ay-owe-lindsay-whalen-117-5-thousand-dollars/

On Borton:
"This season, Borton's annual salary is $325,000, plus $145,000 in supplemental and media compensation. That increases to $335,000 in 2013-14, plus $150,000 in supplemental and media compensation."

No idea if she would be seriously considered or if she would herself be interested, but I don't think money would be an issue.

I can't see Whalen being hired as a head coach. She's a great basketball player and has learned a lot playing professionally, but she has no proven administrative experience or recruiting experience. She has no network of university level assistants to bring in to help with the program. If Norwood is going to do something similar to what he did with the men's program then he needs to do a thorough search of up-and-coming assistant coaches within the women's collegiate sorority not just hire a big name in Minnesota sports.

I have to believe the idea of Whalen becoming the next head coach is purely a rumor.

Minnesota is in the Big Ten. I would be more surprised if an assistant coach is hired than if Whalen were hired. Having said that,
I'd be pretty surprised if Whalen were were hired. Up and coming head coach seems more likely to me...like Pitino.

IDK if this were to work, her assistants would have to be great recruiters, tough to hit the trail while playing in the WNBA, it would be interesting, probably increase attendence

Do the words "Cheryl Littlejohn" mean anything to us? Novelty and name only last for a short time.

You're not seriously bringing Cheryl Littlejohn into a discussion about Lindsey Whalen are you?

Agreed that's what I'm getting at. I don't think Whalen can have a pro career and be a good big ten coach. People would watch for a couple of years, but if were not winning, the barn will be 20 percent full like it is now after a couple years, but if Norwood's thinking short term and is willing to gamble, a Whalen hire would bring immediate excitement into the program. For those keeping score I don't think Whalen will get the job and there's no proof that Whalen's even interested

I knew someone would balk.

My point is that Littlejohn was a ballplayer, but not a coach. She failed miserably. I think Whalen would be better, but at the same time she has zero experience coaching or recruiting. We tried that with Littlejohn and it failed miserably. I am hoping that Teague would recognize the asset he has in Whalen as an alum, yet know that he needs a coach who is hungry, yet seasoned as an assistant. Whalen does not fit that M.O.

Decision made.

I can't believe people would consider who would be a next women's basketball coach without considering Villa 7 and its relationship to Mike Ellis and Norwood Teague. It would be a real kick in the teeth of the Villa 7 concept to hire a completely inexperienced coach. I don't think that is likely to happen at Minnesota under Teague's watch.

They hired Richard Pitino, who had no previous Villa 7 experience. Villa 7 is important, but it isn't their end-all, be-all.

I am probably in the minority, but the second Whalen decides to retire, they need to offer her the head coaching job. Immediately puts the program back into relevancy with the locals. Whalen has a magnetic personality unlike many sports figures this state has ever seen in any sport. Think Fred Hoiberg at ISU. He has zero head coaching experience, but the ISU locals showed up, supported, and he's been really good.

Could be a problem if Borton is fired this year and her replacement is undefeated when Lindsey retires.

Or do you mean keep Borton til Lindsey retires?

Hoiberg is a good comparison though.

As far as local legend, yes. However, Hoiberg, I think, worked at least 3 years for the Wolves after his heart problem. He got experience as assistant coach, player development, dealing with the media, being an administrator, and working with others off the court. Other than being a hell of a player who knows the game, Whalen is woefully unprepared.

I can't believe Borton isn't fired the day after the season ends so the timing, IMO, makes the Whalen talk silly. After axing Tubby, Norwood has got to do the same with Pam, or he would face a whole lot of negative from the women's fans. Don't forget there's a fund raising campaign under way. There's got to be some women out there that are individual, couple, or corporate targets for big donations. Good ol Norwood ain't going to piss them off by appearing to care less about the women's team.

I know you're infatuated with Whalen, Station, but come on. You get the best young coach you can find who shows promise and you'll fire him or her when Whalen retires? Um, we get rid of Pitino and give the job to Bobby Jackson? Not a good comparison but Whalen is unique. With Banham and Zahui back and Wagner coming in, this would be awfully attractive to an ambitious young coach, facilities not withstanding.

I am NOT infatuated with Whalen. I do however think she would be a viable candidate.

The bold is what I suggested tjgopher was implying.

Hoiberg worked the three years in the front office. That would be the college equivalent of working for the AD. Hoiberg had next to zero coaching experience. What you described are front office duties.

Hoiberg is a very good comparison.

Lindsey may be extremely interested in coaching at some point and possibly preparing herself for the time. She also may have zero interest in coaching. Who the hell knows.

Go Gophers!!

Gophers will be either the 6th or 7th seed in the Big Ten Tournament. 6th isn't far fetched -- Gophers have to beat Ohio State and Penn State would have to beat Michigan. Either seed would be the highest since 2008-2009 when they finished 5th. Will play either Wisconsin (swept) or Northwestern (swept) in first round.

Yes, I'm implying you keep Borton until Whalen retires. The timing actual could work out well. Borton's contract expires after the 2015-16 year and that's about the time Whalen should be done playing.

Don't look now, but Borton has her team close to making the NCAA tourney. They are about 40th in the RPI with a very winnable game Sunday, which would put them at 8-8 in the Big Ten heading into the Big Ten Tourney. I don't think the U will fire her if she makes the NCAA Tourney or comes close to it. The cost isn't worth it in so many ways.

Has anyone ever compared Borton to Tubby? They seem similar to me in that they are very authoritarian and the players, while being disciplined, are tending to play scared and are more concerned with the coaches reaction than they are in making the plays necessary to win. Like Tubby, Borton seems to rub players the wrong way and has had some very good players walk away from the program. Also, Borton's best years took place with the players that Littlejohn and Brenda Friese recruited. With her own players she hasn't excelled in motivating or improving their skillsets. I fail to understand why she is still the head coach at Minnesota.

Whalen has remained relatively injury free. At 31 years of age she has at least another 5 year window of playing time.
What we also don't know? Did she get her degree? I remember when everybody was all amped to hire Treat Tucker
And we found out he never received a degree ( He since has ) I think most of us agree that Borton should be relieved of her duties after this season. In Woody we should trust!

She got her degree. Her number is in the rafters and she is in the T. Denny Sanford M-Club Hall of Fame.
