2024 MN High School Football thread

Very interesting and sad:

I don't get it. Do they do what Wisconsin does and reclassify before the playoffs?

They can't make any money.
But, you can stream the semi's on NSPN tv. You will have to pay for it.

Again, I don't understand how football viewership would be less than girls basketball or hockey... If they are making money there, or taking the loss than I don't see how football couldn't be broadcast.
45 has on at 7pm Friday an episode of FRIENDS, a show that went off the air 20 years ago... Saturday is a marathon of Shoppers Showcase. I don't think 45 has a large profile of appointment TV going on they would be dropping for a couple hours of football

I will also be coaching in the semi finals and will be attending several games. I know we can pay to watch through NSPN... I wasn't questioning why people cant watch but why fall sports are not broadcast like winter sports. I have also wondered for a long time why championship games for baseball and softball are not broadcast either

That article defiantly doesn't explain what's really going on INHO. Its like picking up a book and trying to figure out what happened halfway through.

I do know WV has a power point system where a loss to a school 1 class above is worth more or the same as win in the same class as you are. I don't know all the ins and outs of it but there are benefits in there system for both winning and loosing a game for a smaller school playing a game against a bigger classification. I think its similar to our QRF but the QRF doesn't give enough for playing in higher classification games to the lower school.

Very surprised the football tournament isn't broadcast like basketball and hockey tournaments are. Football rules the country as far as TV ratings go and it’s not close. Granted the Quarterfinals are all over the pace, but the semis are all at the bank making logistics easy to broadcast on 45
They do full production with semi finals and have replay. It’s just not on TV.

part of the issue, as I read the article, is that WV went from a 3-class system last year to a 4-class system this year, and it sounds as if the process has not gone smoothly.

The Wood County Board of Education filed the appeal on behalf of Parkersburg High School, Parkersburg South High School and Williamstown High School. At issue was reclassification and the dates used to determine playoff points.

so as I read it, the beef is that teams were re-classified, but schedules were already set, so Team A could not adjust its schedule to try and earn more points in the playoff system. that allegedly put teams at a disadvantage, leading to the court cases. the analogy would be if MN moved a team from class 1A to AA, but that team had already set a 1A schedule, making it harder to accumulate playoff points.

They stream the others because they are on Live TV also. Anything that is not on LiveTV is paid for through streaming. $10 to watch all football state tournament games of your choice.
$10 for each game, correct?

Reading the article is the real issue in the West Virginia case is the judge/judges have terrible judgement

They are basically issuing a restraining order to prevent harm to one team by harming 64 teams? Moron

You should call your legislator and tell them to mandate free streaming of MSHSL state tourney events that aren’t on tv and attach FUNDS to make it happen.

My understanding is the only MSHSL event that garners a TV broadcast profit is Boys Hockey. The profit there I am sure is fraction of what it used to be when it was 1 class and prior to the proliferation of cable/satellite/streaming viewing options.

Every other sport the goal is to lose as little money as possible. Hubbard is basically broadcasting the other events as a public service or that possibly is MSHL is buying the time for the other sports and bundling it for sponsorship.

More football games and other sports would just dig a deeper hole for the MSHL.

That's my take.

This article gives a little bit more of the details.

Becker beats Marshall 28-7.

Just from walking through the skyway on my lunch hour I could tell not only who played but also which team won by the expressions on the fans faces wearing their respective gear.

LOL I'm not into the government MAKING people do things, but it would fit right in with some of the other stuff MN has done

So I've been to the HS boys hockey tourney at the Xcel center even though my kids haven't been playing. I think that's true of many people that go to the boys hockey tournament at the X. For football at US Bank, is it mostly fans/parents of the two teams playing? Or do they get a lot of random fans from other schools too? I've never been to the football playoffs.

when they show state tournament games on TV, it's the same commercials every tournament - same sponsors and literally some of the same ads. Poly-Met has been running the same spots for years about their proposed mining project. and then a lot of promos for Education MN (the teachers' union), and ads for sports rehab services at Tria.

football, men's hoops, women's hoops, etc. so either they are having a really hard time selling spots to advertisers, or no one wants to buy ads on a broadcast of a MN state tournament game.

it would be interesting to know what their rates are.

What you are alluding to is why I think the MSHSL is buying the broadcast time from Hubbard (maybe at some sort of a discount) and then the ads are all (or majority) from sponsors/corporate partners.

That's nothing more than a semi-educated guess.

I would not say a lot, but definitely some. Roughly a third split each way between the 2 participating fanbases and then neutral observers.

You’re not for the government making the MSHSL do things? Seems pretty obvious the state government should be able to control the MSHSL.

MSHSL receives no state money. They generate their revenue through tournament ticket sales, broadcast rights, and sponsorships. The Legislature has addressed MSHSL operations at several junctures. State Auditor used to perform the annual audit (maybe still does) and two-class hockey was either created by the Legislature or through legislative pressure. Other MSHSL issues crop up every now and then.

If the state legislature mandates broadcasting of events they should accompany it with funding. iMO

After a back and forth tied first half, Minnetonka ran all over Anoka in the second half to a 48-27 win.

Tonka DC made the changes and lights out.
Tonka’s new DC, Matt Lombardi, was the Maple Grove head coach for years up until this year. I’m sure he’d love to see a rematch against MG in the championship.

If 45 had their choice, they’d only televise hockey. 19 million views from last year’s tournament. Most from 45tv’s stream. 144,000 attended in person.

Minnetonka likely the favorite next year with what they return on the oline and at QB. Plus another year of Lombari at DC if he stays at Minnetonka. QB rushed for 285 and 5 TD's last night and their two TE sets are dominating. RB added 100 yards as well. It will be interesting to see what level the OL players project to.

In a state with REDICULOUSLY high taxes, Id rather just deal with the situation we have of not broadcasting the quarter and simi final rounds over the air than have more taxes added to the states tax payers. Government over reach is an issue and this is just another situation that would fall into that bucket.

No, I like people having freedom to do as they see fit with their own business... Do i think the MSHSL does things perfect, absolutely not. But I am adamantly against them having the government step in and force them to do something while having to then fund it as well.
