2024 MN High School Football thread

I have not seen maple grove live

Hard to know how good they were because the north never crossed over with other three sections until week 8

They clearly are the favorite after their week 8 game.
I personally would pick Edina and shakopee over Minnetonka.
MG already crushed Edina. So I feel it’s shakopee or MG for the title
Minnetonka beat Shakopee and Edina head to head.

I saw all four in person. It’s Maple Grove and Shakopee IMO. Maple Grove seems on a mission.

Anoka can beat Minnetonka if they don’t turn the ball over. I think they had 2+ red zone turnovers last night.

Blaine I think was a better Matchup for Minnetonka if not for the QB getting hurt on 8th play.

However had Blaine beat Anoka week 3 and flipped seeds, I don’t think Anoka is here and I’m not sure Blaine beats Lakeville South. Matchups are huge in 6A

5A, Owatonna over Cretin 22-21 in OT.

After Cretin scored on their possession, Owatonna converted 4th and Goal from inside the 1. Went for 2 pts, got to the pylon on a sweep right for the W.

Surreal situation with less than 5 minutes in the game, as there was a medical emergency in the Press Box. Ambulance was called, but wound up not life threatening. Appeared to be a CDH Asst Coach.

Game resumed after about 15-20 minutes.

Who
Yikes, 5pm curfew the night before?
Who knows how each team will handle it. I assume Mahnomen has a pretty good system in place as they have been there several times. I'm sure the MSHSL has things in place for teams also if they need to stay the night before, again I am not sure of that though. Teams must stay for basketball, hockey, and others that play the tournament in a 3 day format

as far as JCC is concerned, I think it's a moot point if Voss can't play. He makes this team different. they are just not the same team without him. It would be unfortunate if he winds up getting knocked out of the state tournament with injuries two years in a row - but that's part of football.

sometimes it's not the best team that advances - it's the healthiest team.

to be clear - have not seen anything on his status yet. but Voss was on crutches on the sideline after his injury. even if he's able to play, have to think he will be at least somewhat limited.

of the 10 finalists by class = 6A -2 / 5A - 3 / 4A - 2 / 3A - none / 2A - 1 / 1A - 1 / 9pl - 1

only one I've seen play is Vosika from BOLD. good player, but I don't see him as the top Senior in the state.

FWIW - check out the season stats for Cam Hungerholt, the 9pl QB for LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle/Pacelli:

2,694 yards rushing, 35 rushing touchdowns, 2,183 yards passing, 31 passing touchdowns, 84 tackles on defense, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and five takeaways.

Shaver on podcast said broken ankle and out for the season.

Interesting that none of these guys show up anywhere near the top 10 in terms of in-state recruits for 2025. The LB from Maple Grove has a recruiting grade of 77 on 247.

You would think the winner of Mr. Football in a state would be the kind of player that would be in demand at the college level as well but clearly that isn't always the case and in particular this year.

Last year's winner ended up at South Dakota State but the finalist had a number of the more high profile guys. Although how in the heck was Perich not a finalist for Mr. Football last year?

To be a nominee your coach has to nominate you

To nominate your coach has to be a member of the MFCA.

I would guess for some reason or another he wasn’t nominated

IMO it's about senior or career standouts and they don't look at potential or where you are going. Some coaches are more involved in celebrating players accomplishments and taking the time to nominate them for awards. They also have academic all-state and some programs take pride in these accomplishments. Some of these guys weren't selected for the 88 man roster for the Senior All Star game. For Example they only take 2 metro QB's and 2 outstate QB's.

South is Lakeville N. and Mankato East QBs
North is Anoka and Morris/Chokio-Alberta QBs

Cam Hungerholt mentioned above is playing defensive back in the all-star game. He's committed to Minnesota State Mankato.

As Stated by Some Guy:

A friend of mine is a basketball coach at Kimball. I know their football program was terrible for a very long time. Good for them.

I wish I could have played 9 man. My school moved down a few years after I graduated.

Gophers should consider Owatonna's Ginskey- maybe preferred walk on? I've seen him play a couple times and he reminds me of Adam Thielen. Really good athlete with great hands. Kid also has 10 interceptions, could play some safety

Weird question but are there many head coaches that are not members of the MFCA?

Good info and it all makes sense....was more just pointing out that it is a little odd to see a Mr. Football list without any of the guys currently regarded as being the best/highest rated players in the senior class. But maybe it is that way more often then not. Looking at last year's list, Gilmore and Mandell were both on it but most of the other guys were lower rated players.

With the new paying players, I don't know what the status of PWO is anymore. I think it's just a 105 players starting next season.

48 or the 88 players names to the all star game are committed to play D1 or D2 next year. The 4 Dakota schools with the majority of the D1 guys. Not sure what last year looked like.

Are those 48 football commits or is that all sports? If the 48 is just football it wouldn't shock me if a good chunk of the other 40 are hockey, track or some other sport guys who will be doing that at the college level as opposed to football.
