2024 MN High School Football thread

If the state legislature mandates broadcasting of events they should accompany it with funding. iMO
That's true. Just for reference, I have been around the Legislature for 49 years in a variety of capacities, both on staff and as a lobbyist for a variety of clients, and one thing I've learned over the years vis-a-vis the MSHSL is that they really try to steer clear of the Legislature unless they are dragged into an issue.

I think the MSHSL fear would be in return for receiving money, they would be forced to surrender control to some extent. I saw close-up the fight over two-class hockey and how the MSHSL fought that tooth-and-nail until a couple of very influential legislators rammed it through.

1st Q all Jackson County Central.
2nd Q all Kimball Area.

JCC - 14
KA - 12

Halftime. Both of JCC's TDs were on short 4th & Goal conversions.

FWIW - I'm listening to the JCC-Kimball Area game on local radio. went to the MSHSL website to check out their "Live Stats" and found - the so-called "Live Stats" are running about 6 minutes behind the actual game. On radio, the 1st half just ended - the Live Stats show 6:42 left in the 2nd quarter. And they still have the logos up from the Minnetonka-Anoka game last night.

another quality service provided by the MSHSL.

Excellent game. JCC got Kimball to jump on 3rd and 5 to ice the game and kneel out. Kimball took 26-20 lead and JCC responded with a couple nice runs and an int. 34-26 JCC.

color me surprised. JCC was playing without two 2-way starters: Roman Voss at QB and S, and Ben Gallagher at WR and CB. both out for the season. So I thought JCC just would not be able to match up. but they got enough plays from other people and the defense came up with enough stops. Their D-Line was able to get a pretty good pass rush on the Kimball QB down the stretch to force some bad passes.

having said that, JCC is going to have another big challenge next week against Chatfield or Staples-Motley.

Apparently neither team has a kicker :)

Impressive win for JCC without Voss.
A friend of mine who saw both teams previously, said JCC had converted a kicked PAT earlier this season, but it was after they were already up by 4 TDs.

He hadn't witnessed a Kimball place kick in multiple games.

Very entertaining game, 4 lead changes in the 2nd half. Kimball missed on some critical tackles.

Key play was on about 3rd in 30 in the 4th (own 25), JCC hit their RB on a screen about 10 yds downfield. Pass looked overthrown, but the JCC kid was able to tip it up juggle it while running towards the sticks, haul it in and bull forward for the 1st down. They eventually scored on that drive to tie it.

Totino Grace Vs Orono

TG up 17-7 and content to run the half out and gets stopped to force 3rd and 7. Orono called TO with about 25 seconds left. TG ran a counter play for 65 yard TD on next play. 24-7 TG at the half.

I never understood why we tried kicking PATs all the time when I played. Our kicker maybe made 60-65% of them at the most.

What's interesting is that I have it on good authority, the Kimball Head Coach was a pretty good kicker in both HS and College (St Olaf). Old school, Fred Cox style.

Possible

I was just making a suggestion to the guy of how to solve the no free streaming problem

They were playing up two classes.
And appeared in a state title game.
Just like free and reduced gets a multiplier in calculating attendance, people who pay to attend should have a multiplier for classification

Sports based private schools? Oh boy....
TG brought in 4 of the top freshman from Park Center and Hopkins a few years ago, the head coach owns a recruiting site for BB, 3 from Park Center, and promised all of them to start as freshman, two years in a row, the head coach discontinued or eliminated the starters, most of who were paying full tuition and parents were alumni. I believe he ended up winning 2 state championships. They get the luxury of doing the same thing for football.

MN has open enrollment. It happens everywhere. You can’t make kids go somewhere they don’t want to. And you can’t make Catholic kids go to public school to make you feel better about sports.

At the stadium right now. The seating setup is a total mess and the ushers have no idea what to tell people.

I saw something that JCC shared with their fans. apparently there was a lot of problems with the between-games movement of people, so the MSHSL was trying to prevent players from going up into the concourse area to greet family and friends. there was reference to congestion at the entrances and in the concourse.

the MSHSL was trying to tell people that they could only use certain entrances and exits, etc.

by the way, did you know that in latin, MSHSL means "clusterf*ck?"

I'll write more when I get home but it's a mess.

Agree
But just like your MSHSL enrollment number is .6 for a kid on free and reduced lunch a kid should be like 1.3 if they pay money to go to school there

Literally can’t throw the ball.

Shakopee scored on 99 yd KO and a 3 yard drive after an int.
My son said on the way home - Shakopee's defense had three receptions. Their offense had none.

How did this team get to state?

So the shitshow that was the organization at the stadium...

We arrived just before halftime of the Chatfield - Staples/Motley game (missing all the offense apparently). The stadium looked almost closed. Almost nothing showing where to go etc. Found the correct door, go in. All it says is - home team go right, visitors left, with a list of teams.

We walk around and the only way to get to where the home team seating was said "reserved seats only." So we just walked around a barrier and sat somewhere. Then an usher comes over and says we can't sit there. I ask where can we sit? He says go to where the reserved seats sign is. So we go. I ask when we get there, where general admission sits. They point me in a direction. I ask another usher the same question.

Here I get a convoluted answer about how all the seats in the area are reserved for ONLY the 6A game. So we should go sit somewhere for the second half of Chatfield-SM, but we will have to find new seats for the 6A game. What? Where is GA seating? She doesn't really know. Says maybe they will open sections? What?

So we go in and sit with the Chatfield fans. As we are sitting there, a bunch of MG fans come in and seem super annoyed because there are fans already sitting there. (YEAH, BECAUSE THERE'S ANOTHER GAME GOING ON). Everything feels kind of uncomfortable.

They do open a couple sections further down, so we move over from the awkwardness. As we are moving, there is a huge line of MG fans cordoned off waiting to get in. Like a LOT of them. And it's getting really close to game time. Not sure at what point they were allowed into the seating area, but they all seemed pretty pissy at that point.

I'm still not sure if the section we were in was reserved or not. The students and parents were down below and already in place. Also, the only concessions open on that side were down at the field level where the students were, but if you weren't familiar with the stadium (and the high buck area of the stadium) you would never know where that was. We stumbled on it by accident.

It was all just kind of terribly managed.

The one really good thing - I got street parking a block north of the stadium. Cost me a whole four bucks to park.
