2020 Minnesota Timberwolves Off-Season Thread

The Wolves should draft James Wiseman but they won't. I would really like to see them take Obi Toppin over Ball or Edwards.

I told someone with a lot of influence in the Timberwolves organization that I would actively try to trade the pick, so that's what I would look for them to do.

OK, so maybe I'm overestimating the amount of influence the fella in the ticket office has.

Weisman and Towns together will never, ever happen with the front office they have. Small ball is their thing for sure, but I think Toppin is a guy they would like if a trade is there to make.

I totally agree, but I think Wiseman will end up being the best player in this draft.

Obi seems like a perfect 4 to compliment Towns. I like Ball better than Edwards, but they both feel redundant on this roster.

with the way the NBA is evolving, it seems like a lot of the old labels and ideas about certain positions are fading away. talent is talent, and the goal is to get the most talent on the floor. whether they are a "2" or a "3" or a "4" isn't as important.

you see teams playing without traditional centers, or playing with 2 PG's on the floor at the same time.

so, it looks the NBA is heading in the direction of "get the most talent you can" and let the coaches figure out how to put that talent into a rotation.

Offensively Toppin and Towns would be very hard to stop. Defensively, they would be historically bad.

I'd still roll the dice if a trade for #1 and garbage for let's say #5 and future picks. Get Toppin and hope to out score teams 135-130.

Or....trade #1 and garbage for #8 (Okoro) and future picks and more and maybe have a chance at stopping teams once in a while.

Be in favor of a trade if they can get shooters or stoppers. They desperately need both.

On another note Silver was quoted as saying the next season probably won't start until January.

The NBA did a good job of taking over Christmas day and making that their version of the NFL on Thanksgiving. Now that the NFL has decided to play on Christmas this year, I could see them backing off this year. Starting the season on MLK day would make lots of sense.

Good point, but they may have to start after the 1st but before the 18th.

Yeah, 'cuz the Wolves. Geesus..

This did surprise me though. "Beasley, 23, was arrested after brandishing a gun at someone who then called police, according to sources."

Nowadays people can be arrested for brandishing a firearm? 🤨

I think that the gun was the reason for the call. He was arrested for the weed and the guns found at his place.

Going to go ahead and assume the guns weren’t registered, then? How many times do you hear about athletes getting busted for gun possession. Many of them are millionaires with lots to lose, and they can’t just go through the effort of legally acquiring their guns?

Could be. Though the story as written says he "was arrested after brandishing a gun at someone who then called police". Then "After obtaining a search warrant, officers found marijuana and guns in his home in Plymouth, Minnesota"

Maybe just badly written or he really was arrested for brandishing that gun. Then they got the warrant to search the home where they found the other weapons and the drugs.

Probably not. Most likely didn't go through the proper channels to get them. Just got them through a friend.

Brandishing a gun at someone is hearsay. I suppose they could bring him in for something like that....but I doubt you could hold him. I think it wouldn't be a story if that was all. It's the guns and the weed that they found that has him in trouble. But who knows.

From The Athletic:

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Malik Beasley has been released from jail after being held in custody on allegations of marijuana possession and receiving and concealing stolen weapons, his attorney Steven Haney told The Athletic. There are no official charges at this time, Haney said.

If he really was concealing stolen weapons, he is an idiot.

‘Building a program’: Why Gersson Rosas is a believer in Ryan Saunders

As an unprecedented NBA season enters the stretch run, a surprising number of established, accomplished coaches have suddenly hit the market.

Nate McMillan was fired in Indiana after seemingly overachieving with the Pacers. Mike D’Antoni and the Houston Rockets parted ways, confirming the long-held rumors about his job status. And just this week the Los Angeles Clippers and Doc Rivers went their separate ways as well after a meltdown in the Western Conference semifinals against the Denver Nuggets.

Every time one of them comes available, a certain segment of the Timberwolves fan base openly wonders about the fit in Minnesota. It has long been known internally that Wolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas and coach Ryan Saunders are in lockstep, but Rosas also took time during the team’s bubble workouts this week to make it clear how highly he thinks of the job his coach is doing.

“When you’re building a program and you’re dealing with young players, we’ve got the youngest roster, there’s good and bad days. And being able to keep that focus, being able to keep that vision and making sure that alignment we have from a leadership perspective is carried out every day on the court and in meetings and in the day-to-day stuff is incredibly important,” Rosas said. “Ryan’s been a great partner. They continue to work hard to develop our players.”

Saunders went 19-45 in his first season as the full-time head coach, a record that won’t get anyone comparing him to wunderkind coaches like Sean McVay in the NFL, or even Taylor Jenkins, the 36-year-old who had the Memphis Grizzlies in the running for the playoffs until they were eliminated on the last day of “regular-season” play in the Orlando bubble.

So why do Rosas and the Timberwolves believe so much in Saunders? Rosas said he doesn’t believe it is fair to look at Saunders’ record at this stage of the rebuild. Saunders implemented a brand new system at the start of the season that did not fit the personnel, then had the roster almost completely turned over at the February trade deadline. And of the final 14 games that came before the season was shut down due to COVID-19, Saunders only had centerpiece Karl-Anthony Towns for one of them.

“The way we started, just the talent base we had changed significantly,” Rosas said. “But it’s tough and it’s hard for a coach.”

per Shooter:

DON’T PRINT THAT
Glen Taylor, who has considered selling the Timberwolves since the summer, said Saturday he’s still exploring the possibility.

“We don’t have anything definite yet,” Taylor said. “We haven’t made any decision. There is nothing agreed to. We have some people who have said they would like to pursue it. With the value of these franchises, which has gotten up there, in order to make that decision on other people’s parts, this is really a big decision nowadays.”

The Timberwolves have been valued at $1.4 billion by Forbes. The Pioneer Press reported in September that representatives of the New Jersey-based Straus Group had been at Target Center perusing facilities.

Taylor on Saturday confirmed that Straus is among several groups interested, but added, “I don’t know if there’s a frontrunner.”

Is Taylor confident he’ll end up selling the team he bought for $88.5 million in 1994?

“I really can’t even answer that,” he said.

Taylor declined to say the price for the Timberwolves, but joked with a laugh, “$3 billion.”

I asked Taylor if he thought new ownership might make management and coaching changes.

“One of the things we have done, and of course we would do if people are expressing some interest, we would have them meet our employees and go through all the stuff like that,” he said. “We think we have a good staff in place, but if someone was interested in doing a purchase, we want to make sure that they meet them and are comfortable with the people that are running it now.”

Some people wonder whether Wolves’ basketball president Gersson Rosas, who worked with now-free agent veteran coach Mike D’Antoni with the Houston Rockets, would consider D’Antoni as coach if there were an ownership change.

“I don’t think so,” Taylor said.

Yes please, but we don't have enough to make it happen.

No kidding. NBA Bull Sheet Season has started early this year.;)

Tried the NBA Trade Machine for a few minutes and it just won't work. Finally clicked on the "PPP" under Simmons. It said he has a "Poison Pill Provision". You can't just make the correct salaries match. The PPP says you have to take the whole value of his contract and match salaries up to that.

Philly is gonna have him for awhile.

They could put together enough to get the salaries to match but it would be a situation where Philly gets a lot of pieces from us and we get Simmons. Philly doesn't want a lot of pieces that are only ok to worse (guys like Culver, Okogie, Johnson, Spellman, etc.). Plus, Simmons isn't the perfect fit for a team like the Wolves that can't shoot the 3 well, but I'd still take him since he excels at everything else.

I don't watch much NBA outside of the Wolves, but what exactly is the draw of a tall perimeter player that literally can't hit a 3 to save his life and shoots 60% FT? Sounds like a guy I don't want on the court at the end of games.

Maybe but the Trade Machine doesn't think so. When you finally get the $48,700,000 needed to match Simmons contract it always says that it can't be accepted because the "76er's are over the cap" and you have to cut 17,18, 19 million to make it work. If you do that it will say the Wolves are over the cap. but you still have to match that $48.7

Never ran into this before but never ran into a "Poison Pill Provision" before either.

Maybe they'd need to get 2 or 3 other teams involved or most likely Rashad Phillips just made the whole thing up.

Im ready for another reboot. Its so much fun. Butler is right, KAT is a punk. Trade him and his boyfriend D'Loading ASAP

Jimmy wanted out of Chicago too. And remember Jimmy wasn't saying any of that about KAT until after he found out that the Wolves couldn't give him that max contract that he craved. Then Butler acted like a little a-hole. Throwing tantrums, missing practices, only playing when he wanted to etc. While that moron Thibs, his "buddy", just stood around and took it.

Personally, wish they had giving Butler the money instead of giving it to Wiggins but I never "looked Andrew in the eye" the way Taylor did. Geesus..:cautious:

Philly kinda decide that same thing. Butler wanted to stay there but since he couldn't get the max he was gone. It certainly has worked out in Miami. Odd that a guy who's all about the team when he's on the court but all about himself off it.

Want to trade KAT and Russell Here, knock yourself out. Looks like you gotta get about $54mill in current contract(s) back.

At least there's no Poison Pill to deal with. :)

I've already got my Phoenix Suns trade lined up. Towns and DLo get to pair with their BFF Devin Booker. I'm only trading KAT if the other team takes that overrated Russell too
