2020-2021 College Basketball Other Games Thread

Mich big FR Hunter Dickinson is going to be a force.

The underdog teams are not afraid of the BIG hoops.

Kentucky loses to Richmond

This is technically an upset but not real surprising given what Richmond has coming back. Believe they return 7 or 8 of their top 8 or 9 guys including four seniors and multiple double-figure scorers.

They are the favorite in the A10 (along with St. Louis) and would win 25 games if this were a normal season.

The surprising thing is that they won without shooting it well, AT ALL. They were broke as heck in the first half from deep. Kentucky's issue (as it usually is) is that it can't shoot. In previous years, they always made up for it by forcing turnovers and scoring in transition. They couldn't turn Richmond over - I'd bet that changes as the season goes forward.

Kentucky also outrebounded them 53-31 and Richmond still won.

Probably cause UK managed to make.......0 3s.

Crazy game.

Thanks. I didn't even know. He must not be too thrilled about that.

I would assume it has something to do with his academics. He wouldn't even have gotten into the U, I don't believe.

I think it might be academic related. I hope it all works out for him.

Maybe something to watch as the season goes forward...and, maybe nothing to see here. Time will tell.

No. The all knowing studio guys on ESPN said it was no big deal. That's coaching. That's being competitive. That's what they do. Media always right in their analysis. I do remember them saying similar things about Chambers on court blow ups against his players, but I need to remember they are always right.

Fututre opponent UM-Kansas City plays K-State tonight at 7pm on ESPNU. A game to keep an eye on.
UMKC scored 138 points against a DIII school without making a single 3PT shot and only 14-28 FTs ( Not meaningful, just an interesting fact )
Gophers plan to play UMKC dec. 10th.

That's just "Kansas City". Just like UW-Green Bay is just "Green Bay".

When I first saw our schedule I said, "oh it looks like MBB is playing the Packers and Chiefs this year!"

I've never seen them be called just 'Kansas City' before this year. It was always UMKC. I was confused when I first saw the schedule this year.

"Kansas City" is much better, marketing wise, than a jumble of letters, particularly those that confer a lesser status (in the university system).

Yep, when I just saw Kansas City, I thought this game was either a new team that just made the transition to D1, like UST is doing, or it was a current DII team that we were playing just like Chaminade is DII even though they play in the Maui classic every year.

Serious question: Each of us is coaching, early in the season, you are down to Oakland. Your star player lips off! 1. You diffusing it and walking away...ignoring it?
Or 2. You sit him down right beside you and take your chances with the other guys?

I‘m choosing number 2. There is no way you can accept that during a game!
Slowly, you lose respect and discipline from all your players.

First of all, if i were coaching we wouldnt be down :). But given your hypothetical, i would think izzo would have lost his mind at that point. Cant imagine K or Jay Wright just walking away either. Suppose it is more problematic for less established coaches, but walking away cant be an option there.

Personally i would not make much of it without knowing the relationship betwen the two nor knowing what was said. Each coach has their own style of managing a team. The best coaches i know create player led teams and those teams that are their best teams are players leading. How they go about it may be different. K and Izzo may very well think that it is disrespectful, perhaps with Howard it is viewed differently. Time will tell if it makes them closer, more successful.

I wonder if part of it is because they all think of Juwan as more the player than the coach.

Race Thompson playing well for Indiana. Looks good. Wish he hadn't reclassified and stayed here.

I try not to be someone who complains about missing on Minnesota kids but watching so many Minnesota big men play great over the past few days (Theo John, Dawson Garcia, Nate Reuvers, Ben Carlson, Jericho Sims, Race Thompson all have been quite solid) and we couldn't land any of them instead of Omersa is disappointing.

We got Oturu, remember?

Straight answer is that I would choose 2, as I think a vast majority of my generation would. That doesn't make it an automatic decision now or if it would work. I think clear lines of respected authority are best for leadership, but the world is really different now.

Izzo seems to have heated chats on his sideline frequently, but has no reputation of being an abuser or a tyrant, and to my knowledge has never booted a player off the team for insubordination. If Howard has control of his team in the context of a player barking at him in a tight game on the sideline, more power to him. I suspect the key to mantaining order is everyone being treated the same. If barking gets one seated, it should get all seated. If barking is allowed for one, it should be allowed for all.

😎 Love it! I want my players to voice their opinions to me. And sometimes it gets heated. But that has to be in my office or at a closed practice. And most importantly players gotta know the difference. It can’t happen in public...traveling or during a game. That has to be communicated and understood.

This gets reviewed nearly weekly. Not getting very many high end Minnesota kids is not that big of a deal. Many programs that are actually elite lose better players and more of them from their states.

I agree with that. And if barking is allowed for all you’ll never get anything accomplished in a timeout. There just is not time.
Plus, it’s going to bite you. Parents, administrators, boosters, somebody is not going to approve of how you do things. They will not believe you have control of your guys and when a rough patch comes your backing will be compromised from those people.
Tracy Claeyes is a twisted example of my point...he went to bat for his players.
People in higher places didn’t stand behind him...different but a coach and his players have to exhibit decorum, discipline that the public understands when it’s publicly visible. Practice can have heated exchanges...not games.

Yeah and that was awesome. But one player doesn't a program make. Didn't even need to be Minnesota kids but it hurts when a lot of them are solid players while guys like Omersa, Freeman, Hurt, and Demir aren't big ten quality. I will say I'm excited about Robbins and Ihnen.

Again, not trying to say we have to get Minnesota kids, I'd be happy if we got higher quality bigs from anywhere. But when ours are poor and there are a bunch of Minnesotans doing great it sucks.

Demir is a lower end Big Ten starter. I wouldn’t say he isn’t “Big Ten quality”
