DP - you are right about Tyus and Rashad - the odds of either of them coming here are slim. But to say that those prior recruits weren't worth it is crazy. Rickert had a fantastic freshman year. Should we turn away players of that talent?

This is just me, but there are 3 prerequisites any player must possess before I want them on my team, particularly in basketball: 1. Talent 2. Desire to be here 3. Deference to team over self (this particularly includes parents, since we are discussing young people fresh out of HS)

Rickert and Humphries both passed 1 easily. Rickert for sure didn't pass 2 or 3 (the latter mostly because of his father), and Humphries certainly didn't pass 3, due both to his play and his father. He may not have passed 2 either, but I don't know enough about his situation to comment. You can get away with selfish players who'd rather be elsewhere in football, because they are only 1 out of ~100 players on the team, and only 1 out of 22 players on the field (i.e., less than 5% of the total offensive/defensive output). In basketball, they are 1 out of ~15 on the team, and 1 out of 5 on the court (i.e., 20% of the total offensive/defensive output). Chemistry is most important in basketball due to the limited number of players on the playing surface, and both players were total "clubhouse cancers" because of they/their father's attitude and in Rickert's case (at least) because he didn't want to be here. The only reason Rickert ended up here is because some MN boosters/administrators got in his dad's ear and convinced him MN would be the place to showcase him and punch his ticket to the NBA. His dad wouldn't sign his LOI for Arizona because he was convinced Rick needed to be at MN. Monson was desperate for talent and took whatever he could get without weighing the other factors. That's why I say they weren't worth bringing in. You need players who want to be here and want to be part of a team.

I actually think you make sense with your argument. It may be convoluted way to get there but it does have a certain logic.

There's no reason to assume we'll lose out on Vaughn & Jones. Tubby hasn't lost an in-state player that he wanted & if we make some noise this year there's no reason recruits like Vaughn & Jones are out of our league. If the Hollins boys can light it up it increases the odds even more imo.

RaShawn Powell, Rashad Vaughn Recruiting Updates

Vaughn on Baylor: “Just the relationship with the coaches and their winning streak at the school.”

On Texas: “That’s a big-time basketball school. I have a good relationship with the coaches.”

He said Minnesota is also making a hard push.

Go Gophers!!

No mention of Wisconsin, I love it, have a successull season and who knows.

Rashad Vaughn–Class of 2013
Rashad Vaughn was one of the stars of the Reebok Challenge Day 3. The 6-foot-6, 200-pound shooting guard from Robbinsdale Cooper HS (Minn.) put on an offensive show with 32 points. He shot 12-of-19 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Vaughn is a pure scorer, excellent at getting to the rim in transition. He is also one of the more heavily recruited prospects at the camp, with college coaches packing the stands during his team’s game. According to Scout.com, Vaughn holds offers from Arizona State, Baylor, Georgetown, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisville, Minnesota, Oregon State, and Texas.

The only way he have a chance is to have a great season. I'm talking sweet sixteen at least. Contending for the Big Ten title sure wouldn't hurt either.

Tweet from Iowa State writer:

"Kansas head coach Bill Self & Wisconsin assistant watching 2014 SG Rashad Vaughn tonight per @Evan_Flood. Baylor & others also watching"

Go Gophers!!

I would have to agree with this (need a big year for recruiting) - And having the student section chant "We want Tyus" a few more times when he is sitting behind the bench during big home games doesn't hurt.

This is the Rashad Vaughn thread, maybe the crowd should shout we want "Rashad" instead of Tyus if we want Vaughn.

day two of the Under Armour Summer Jam (link)

"Vaughn Emerges As Top Player At Summer Jam

With Kentucky, Baylor, Iowa State, Iowa, Minnesota, Texas, Tennessee and more watching on, 2014 shooting guard Rashad Vaughn topped Wednesday nights 26-point performance with an even better one in a loss on Thursday. The No. 20 rising junior in the Rivals100 showed off on the court as he shot the rock from all over the court, slashed and finished at the hole. There were points in the game when the 4-star talent from Net Gain Sports (MN) looked like one of the best scorers in the nation. Vaughn, who will return to Robbinsdale Cooper (MN) this fall, has caught the attention of Kentucky and North Carolina and is hoping an offer comes in. As a majority of the schools recruiting him are making a strong push, Vaughn told Rivals.com he will likely visit Baylor in August. He lists scholarships from Minnesota, Iowa State, Iowa, Kansas, Baylor, Texas, Syracuse, Tennessee, Colorado, Michigan State and Michigan.

Man, I can't even imagine what it would be like to get Rashad and Tyus. What a combo they would make.

2012 Vegas Recap: Thursday

"While the anticipated match-up between Hubbs and Vaughn didn’t exactly materialize, both players flashed signs of why they are considered by talent evaluators to be among the top shooting guards in their classes, nationally.

It was a story of two halves, as Vaughn played exceedingly well in the first half and Hubbs owned the second half of action. In the end, the contest took two overtimes to award M33M as the victors by a hair."

Vaughn comes to Gopherland - Tyus heads to Duke. Hope i'm wrong, but can Tubby convince Tyus to stay home? That's a very tall order. Fingers crossed.... If the Barn is rocking this year, that should help.

They have an unprecedented opportunity to become legends in Minnesota, for life. If they go elsewhere I wish them luck. Come on guys, stay home!

At this point, I would be thrilled with that outcome.

Unbelievable. Didn't realize Travis was getting that much love either. Let's just throw in Okafor with those 3 to round out the class.

Perfect. As well as Kyle Washington in 2013 and you have a team likely better than this years squad.

G - Tyus Jones
G - Rashad Vaughn
G - Joe Coleman
F - Kyle Washington
C - Jahlil Okafor

6th Man - Reid Travis

Are you attempting to predict our 2014 lineup? I think it would likely look more like this (assuming we get everyone)...

PG: Tyus Jones
SG: Andre Hollins
SF: Rashad Vaughn
PF: Jahlil Okafor
C: Mo Walker/Elliot Eliason

Bench: Coleman, MW/EE, Washington, Buggs, Ellenson, Oto ...
