GAME #28: Gophers (17-10, 6-8) @ O$U (21-6, 8-6) [BTN, 2/22, 5:00PM]

Is Austin the worst senior starter in the last 10-15 years?

It would be if they consistently tried hard and were willing to focus during the game.

and that there is the problem. They get a lead, lose focus and start chucking up 3's...and when teams make a run we don't have the talent to match them...yet. Pitino needs time to get his guys in.

What a spanking. Pitino just got owned this half. Totally owned.

Well I'm not ready to question Pitino.. Just look at who he to work with.... Mav? Buggs? Shell? Oto? Austin? King? Smith? Elliot? Mo? The only ones I didn't name are the only ones that won't stumble over their own feet.

Agree. Play Buggs. Also, you have to have a game plan that doesn't allow the other team to just funnel shots to weak players like King (11 shots) and Oto while Andre Hollins has 3 shots. Smith will he -EVER make another shot?

I can't wait until we rid ourselves of Tubbys week minded lazy recruits.

If Oto's not going to go after rebounds, fight through screens, or hustle down the floor on D then he should just quit.

I hope Pitino tells him to transfer.

Silver lining. 9 new players minimum in the next two years. We have arguably the best 5 guys on the team coming back next year....

Honestly, if I didn't care so much I'd be laughing hysterically at the Gophers. What we've seen from this team since they beat Wisconsin at home has been pretty horrific. It's not as frustrating as last year when there was more talent, but the conference isn't as good this year either. Obviously talent is a huge issue, but most teams don't outscore the cupcakes in the non-conference season by TWENTY SEVEN in less than 17 minutes of game time.

I really can't believe we change coaches and basically have the exact same pattern to our season with many of the same problems (at least we weren't soft last year thanks to Trevor) I wouldn't wish Gopher type seasons on any fan base outside of Iowa's and Wisconsin's.

Me either. The kind of crap we have seen from players these last few games is uncoachable. In the last game, we had two inbound violations. I cannot imagine that many coaches at this level would have felt like they needed to spend practice time explaining how to legally inbound the ball. If Pitino had picked and recruited most of these players, then we could talk about whether it is his fault for filling the roster with a bunch of gutless wonders.

You can't be serious? The players he has to work with is terrible. Big Dre is good, and guess who the next best guy is supposed to be? Austin... Without Little Dre and Smith and McNeil... this team would be in last place like they were supposed to be.

So you believe that we are just this bad? Then how did we beat Ohio St. the first time? I never said we have a ton of talent, but there is no way we are this bad talent wise. There's no way you can be up 12 and down 20 in the same half and it not be about more than just talent.

This just isn't a good team. We surprised some teams earlier with e play of little Dre but teams are defending us so much better. I am not sure these guys will win another game other than penn state

32 point swing in less than a half

I really wish Pitino would shake things up and start something like math dre mcneil buggs and mo. Make austin king oto and ee work for it.

I'd bet a good amount of money collins or miles would have done better with this group. Its obvious he isn't good adjusting mid game, He is too reliant on talent, if he was a good coach he'd be able to adjust, we don't have the talent to win when you can't counter another coaches in game adjustment just by sticking to our orginal game plan

This is a case of 4 star athletes vs 3 star athletes IMO. The Gophers are a click slower and so they get blocked in the paint. Their 3 point shooting is dreadful so they cannot resort to that as an answer. Their press is next to worthless and only sets up mismatches which a more athletic team like OSU can exploit. The only way they would have won today is if Ross had been suspended.

Oto and Austin were especially egregious today. I feel sorry for Austin. This is a rough way to go out, but his head is not in the game right now. Dumb turnovers, no offense whatsoever, no rebounding, horrible, horrible concentration on defense, just an appalling performance. And the less said about Oto the better. I think Pitino failed to adjust his guys to what OSU would do (attack the basket, turn up the pressure on D), but at the end of the day, this is a team without talent, especially when Hollins is obviously not right (he can barely run right now). And let's not forget how much Elliott has disappeared since getting the captaincy. Not a game we were expecting to win, but this second half has been an embarrassment. Hopefully this means Iowa will come in complacent, though I think it's going to take a combination of complacency, the services of a hypnotist to make Austin think this is the year 2012, and some sort of massive bout of food poisoning to make Tuesday's game competitive.

If you're going to start buggs you might as well start schell and bring back wally too.

What he is supposed to do? Say "so far this have, you guys have not tried at all, from this point forward, I would like you to please begin exerting effort"? You can come up with a plan for untalented players if they are willing to work hard, focus, and execute it. You can't do anything when you are coaching quitters. All we need to know about the desire and hunger of our players is that we have a thread about how maybe the coach is being too mean to them when they make mistakes. How can they possibly be so soft?

tOSU is going to outscore our total points just in the second half alone, you only see that in a Duke vs Alcorn State type of game, can't believe we were actually worried about pitino leaving for louisville or the nba, he is no where ready with how his in game coaching currently is

That may be true and ultimately only time will tell, but I would be mildly surprised if even the elite coaches in the conference (Izzo, Ryan, Bielein, Matta) could squeeze a .500 record out of this group. They're just not good basketball players, and none of them seem to have any balls on top of that.

Sounds like a great day to not be able to watch the game! And now I'll watch the little one play instead.

Yep, totally agree. I categorize them the same also. Tubby players are all weak minded, passive, with nerves of glass. Mav.. trips over himself. Buggs not enough to know yet but obviously not good enough yet, Shell walk on, Oto trips over himself, Austin intercepts his own passes, Elliot passive, Mo soft player. A coach recruits the type of players he wants his team to be. Tubby wanted passive robots to play his style at all costs.

They are not this bad. They're bad, but not this bad. It's pretty obvious several players don't have their heads in the game. The coaches were too busy talking sh!t to Amelia about how great their defense was in the 1st half to prepare for what Motta was going to give them I'm the 2nd. So both coaches and players just dropped the ball.

At least I can walk away and go outside where it is 75 and sunny here in the Bay area. How are things in Mpls?

Let's not pin this on Tubby too quickly. Li'l Dre tries hard but has been anonymous the last two games, and Malik's been stuck on Bad Malik Mode for weeks. The problem with these team are dearth of talent which the Big Ten has adjusted to, and also, complete lack of leadership. Austin is in a funk the likes of which I've never seen, as is Elliott, and those are supposed to be two of our leaders. With how the B1G is this year, we could still steal one of the next two, but I'd put a substantial sum against it.

It's not just Tubby's players though. Since Malik Smith's big game against Nebraska, he's made 6 of 35 three pointers! That's a cool 17%.
