All Things Taison Chatman Recruiting Thread (Class of 2023, Totino-Grace HS, Gophers Offered)

This happens with every new coach. You argued it happened more with Johnson. That’s not true.

Yeah he finished last and he shouldn’t have. His team was better than other bottom dwellers and they didn’t earn it. If it happens again this year, his seat will be hot. That’s a hot seat in two years. Not a longer leash than anyone else. I’ll be one who will be concerned as well. That being said I’m confident it won’t happen and we will show improvement and make the tourney or at minimum be on the bubble.

It’s been one year. You are continuing to not understand program building and want a quick fix. Quick fixes rarely work in hoops. Again, if they don’t improve on last year, I can see your angst. I get some lack of patience after dealing with the crap teams we’ve had for decades, but if the team improves, I hope you can get on board or at least extend some. Winning big early very rarely happens when the program was where we were at. You typically have to move up tiers in the conference. You continue to act like it doesn’t matter, which is your prerogative but you won’t be happy often without respecting any context.
Program building.
Doesnt
Have
To
Take
Years
And
Years.

Stop saying it does.

And after following the program and coaches for decades, cbj had been handled much differently from gh for certain. Maybe due to him being a local and alum.
And, I know the cbj protection detail is ready for action. Just look at the above.

BTW. His seat won’t be hot with a bottom tier finish. Loooooooong leash. We both know it.

It’s been one year with one last place finish. It hasn’t been years. Stop acting like it has been. I’ve already said I expect us to be in the top 10 in the conference this year.

Pitino had it too. I was one of them. I jumped off that wagon way later than I should’ve. I also found out things more than.

If he finishes bottom 4 again, his seat will be warm. If he finishes last, it will be hot. There is an expectation that he needs to get better soon. He won’t get Whalen type leash. Mens bball is a different beast and one Coyle takes a ton of pride in. He won’t tolerate it if their isn’t an improvement on the horizon. Ben will get 3 years for sure yes, but who doesn’t unless their is a scandal.

I haven’t said nor acted like it has been more rhan one season.
OTOH, post after post about taking 3-5 years to make a big leap. Stop acting like those posts don’t exist.
Coyle will give him a very long leash. Loooooong. I will admit I’m wrong if he doesn’t.

"Pretty obvious?" To who? Nothing is obvious yet except we are on a good upward trajectory so far.

Based on what? I guess when you finish last there is nowhere else to go but up, unless you finish last again...

This is beyond dumb and just part of your act. Every coach has had their honeymoon period. If Ben finishes in last place again, his seat will be hot and it should be. I think this team finishes in the 7-10 spot in the conference as constructed. Building takes time, but it doesn’t require multiple last place years.
You've said this multiple times. I have a hard time believing there's a hot seat, as long as the team looks competitive and respectable.

The only chance if they're last AND look out of sorts and don't look like they belong I'm the BIG. Outside of that or a crazy scandal...there's no hot seat. Mildly warm at most.

Most commenters seem to think that Samuels isn't any good. I see that he had 23 points in a game @Georgetown and 22 points @Stanford...so I'm hoping that he has some potential.
Most would have said the same about Loewe and EJ Stephens a year ago too. No one knows for sure how lower conference guys will adjust.

Ben's seat doesn't warm until after year 3 at the earliest unless there's off-court issues. Especially since Lindsey will be first on the firing line for Coyle.

Finishing last place two years in a row would not be the definition of competitive or respectable in my opinion. That’s why I say that. He’ll get a third year, but the improvement would need to be marketable.

To finish worse than NW and Nebraska this year, out of sorts will be required. Don’t think it’s possible with this roster personally. More arguing that Ben’s leash isn’t longer than any other coach here.

Bless your heart for continuing to try with bb

Loewe and Stephens averaged nearly double the amount of points with a much higher shooting percentage compared to what Samuels did at their previous schools.

True. I don't expect him to start or play nearly as much as as those two did though.

How long exactly does program building take?

Win.

Lose.

One
Or
The
Other.

Black
And
White.
We all roll out the ball to win the game... that is always the intent. But no 2 wins are exactly the same any more than any 2 losses are. It is not as simple as black and white.

If the Gophers beat Directional State at Williams by 1 on a last second bucket, most reasonable people with be pi55ed off. This in sharp contrast to the elation of a convincing win over a B1G rival. Both Ws but both roundly different experiences.

Similarly, people will be much more pleased if the Gophers were to lose away to UNC or Duke by 1 than a similar loss by 30 at home to Northwestern. Both Ls but the fan's perception of the game and the team will be markedly different.

There are some fans who would rather see the 1 point loss to UNC versus the 1 point win versus Directional State. This further illustrates how life is not all Ws and Ls.

You somehow think that Johnson will not be judged by the wins and losses. That is ridiculous. He will be judged just like any other coach. If he has the team on a trajectory moving up the standings year after year, he will be given a long leash. The administration and most fans will be happy if the team is building.

If Johnson leads the team in conference from last to 12th to 8th to 6th to 4th in his first 5 years, most fans will look for the team to continue building and making progress. If Johnson jumps to 8th this year and 4th the following year but falls to 12th the next two years, his seat will start to get warm unless there are clear reasons for the decline.

We are all frustrated because our teams over the last decade have shown great promise only to falter in one way or another. Good seasons have been followed by embarrassing ones. This program needs consistency. If Johnson can get this program to a level where we can consistently expect to content for a tournament berth and can occasionally complete for a conference title, most fans will be ecstatic!

Speaking of long leashes, I don't know what barn is still allowed on this site. He's been suspended multiple times. Calling barn a "goon" is slanderous to the goon community. He's not worthy of the name.
Cancelled. Btw, if anyone is looking for an honest politician look no further than Cuomo.

Any news on Taison? I'll throw my crystal ball at Ohio State
This article out of Columbus sure makes it sound like he enjoyed his visit.

His father, Tommy, provides some small snippets about other officials to Kansas, Xavier, and UConn. No mention of Virginia and the U which were also among his top 5.

Father Tommy sounds like a real pimper!

You said it does not take "years". So now tell us exactly how long it should take.
It doesn’t. Plenty of examples. Iowa state last year. Year 1. Followed by a top recruiting class. Others have huge success year 2.

Just win dak a$$
