All Things Taison Chatman Recruiting Thread (Class of 2023, Totino-Grace HS, Gophers Offered)

Is he attainable? From what I've heard Ben has recruited him hard. Havent even heard hes interested lately. Ben's interested, but is the kid? Doesnt sound like he's interested.
Interesting take. Previous coaches didn’t have the caveat of “ is he attainable “.

I’m not trying to accomplish anything. Just frustrated that we have a glaring hole at PG and we’re not really even in the running for an in state kid that should be at least somewhat attainable.
Willis was HM All Conference last year and Cooper is a pretty highly thought of transfer. I don’t think the hole is that big at lead guard. Chatman was somewhat attainable. Choose money and OSU. Holloman chose MSU. If he misses Asuma, then I think it’s really fair to be worried

Asuma is the guy I really hope he gets.

I like everything about where this class is heading except for how they've recruited the guard position. It's pretty obvious we are headed back to the Tubby days of having a roster filled with 6'7"+ guys and no real PG who's a scoring threat. That doesn't work IMO. Having multiple guards who can handle the ball and score at a high level is what wins you games in college basketball.
Christie is a pg who can score

Well then. Nothing to worry about regarding the pg position. Playa and 84 are on board.
A young kid named Earvin Johnson out of Michigan could be on this team as a newbie and there'd be some worry warts on here complaining that he was too tall to play point! These negative nellies are simply laser-focused on whether someone looks like a prototypical point... most have never seen a full game of the player- let alone have the knowledge to tell how their skills will translate from high school to college. These posters somehow know more than the coaches and recruiting services! I love it!

Coaches are always right, always win, and never get fired. No reason to talk about the current roster construction and recruiting. BJ is the best ever, and the Gophers will win a B1G championship this season with our deep and talented roster. Did I miss anything?

Worry all you want or don’t worry. It’s a message board And discussions will happen.
The only facts we have so far with Ben as our coach: we got an HM All Con PG in the portal. We have missed on all of the prep ones so far. We have recruited two bigger wings who can also handle the ball. We currently have brought in two PGs from the portal for this upcoming season. Cooper comes with more accolades but of course isn’t a sure thing, but honestly neither would Holloman or any other prep Pg.

Hey, you and playa said Christe is a pg. Great. We shall see if that works out. Just win, eight 4.

Exactly we shall see. I will continue to say though, positionless basketball is continuing to happen and what a PG is now is a lot different than what it used to be.

You and playa are coaching guru’s. Not me. Chatman appears uninterested in cbj and Mn.

Not gurus, but guys who’ve coached before. Agree Chatman seems to have moved on from MN and Ben. I know it wasn’t for a lack of effort early in his recruitment. Still didn’t close it, but that doesn’t mean we are shot at the PG spot. We haven’t seen Cooper, Henley, or Christie play the spot. Portal has been fruitful for us at that position (small sample size) so yeah I’m choosing to not be worried yet.

No one every said any of these things. Just want to add a little perspective to the situation. Some posters are such debbie downers. Let's let them play a game before we write off the season. Most wrote them off last year and they went undefeated out of conference and punched above their weight in conference.

This year's roster appears to be much more talented and deeper than last year's. I hope we see that lead to improvement in many facets of the team. That should translate to the Ws that we are all ultimately hoping for.

Go Gophers!

NO ONE had written off the season.

Just win 84.

They finished last in the B1G last year. I guess it's pretty impressive to 'punch above your weight' and still be the worst team in the conference.

So regardless of whether we finished last in BIG or not, did they exceed your expectations of what you thought they would be and did you think Ben did a good job last year?

Regardless of finishing last? Last.

Good job equals last place now.

No. They were as bad as expected because of the poor roster construction and recruiting when Ben arrived. I have the same concerns heading into this season. They have slightly more talent, but are very thin once again. I don't like where we are today at the guard position and where we are heading with it long term.

A lot of people expected no big ten wins and multiple losses in the non con. That’s why some people reasonably happy with last year.
As far as the guard spot, depending on what you count as a “guard”. Battle is going to be an all B1G player this year. Cooper is being reported as being good. We aren’t far from average in the backcourt especially if Carrington or Henley can be a competent 5th starter.

Really? Try not be so superficial.

You know very well that the teams place in the B1G standings is not the only metric of measurement. It was his first frcking year as an unproven coach in the aftermath of the Covid transfer environment.

Rebuilding of programs takes time and Ben surpassed most everyones expectations. So, yes he did a good job last year.

If win/loss records are your only interest, then just pull up the box scores and skip all of this "fan" stuff.

"Pretty obvious?" To who? Nothing is obvious yet except we are on a good upward trajectory so far.

Of course they did. No one reasonably believed we had a chance for Tyus, Trey, Chet et al.

Lots of excuses. Not much else.

Just win.

Nope. The expectations with cbj and his predecessors is markedly different. The latest rung in the excuses ladder is NIL.

This is beyond dumb and just part of your act. Every coach has had their honeymoon period. If Ben finishes in last place again, his seat will be hot and it should be. I think this team finishes in the 7-10 spot in the conference as constructed. Building takes time, but it doesn’t require multiple last place years.

There were posters making excuses immediately after the hiring announcement. Perhaps that is part of your act?
Cbj has been given a lot of room. It was his choice to bring in the kids he did for last year’s team. And he was praised for it over and over.
Then, after a last place finish, which btw cbj guaranteed would not happen, additional excuses.
After decades of supporting this team, I simply want to win big. Perhaps I am not ready for my honeymoon period?

This happens with every new coach. You argued it happened more with Johnson. That’s not true.

Yeah he finished last and he shouldn’t have. His team was better than other bottom dwellers and they didn’t earn it. If it happens again this year, his seat will be hot. That’s a hot seat in two years. Not a longer leash than anyone else. I’ll be one who will be concerned as well. That being said I’m confident it won’t happen and we will show improvement and make the tourney or at minimum be on the bubble.

It’s been one year. You are continuing to not understand program building and want a quick fix. Quick fixes rarely work in hoops. Again, if they don’t improve on last year, I can see your angst. I get some lack of patience after dealing with the crap teams we’ve had for decades, but if the team improves, I hope you can get on board or at least extend some. Winning big early very rarely happens when the program was where we were at. You typically have to move up tiers in the conference. You continue to act like it doesn’t matter, which is your prerogative but you won’t be happy often without respecting any context.
