MLB Hot Stove League = Player Movement & Innuendo

I remember when Killebrew getting $100,000 a year from the Twins was a big deal. Shoot, Calvin used to cut a player's salary if they had a bad year.

Then they got rid of that pesky reserve clause, and the sport went to hell.
The Twins made Kirby Puckett the highest paid player in baseball when he signed his last contract. I think it was $3 million/year.

That wasn't his last contract. That was in 1989. His next one was 5 years, and 30 million, which I think made him highest paid again. Probably for just a day or two...

So they're going to expand the playoffs to 12 or 14 teams? What a phucking joke.

Baseball was my favorite sport for decades.

Now they want to render the regular season meaninglessness, play until Thanksgiving, blah blah blah.

The game has become a disgrace.

Bundy isn't exciting but they needed more than one starter. Low risk move I guess.

Bundy probably will be like the Homer Bailey signing from a few years ago. Only reason he'll pitch is because we need a body on the mound.

There will be a season. If Bundy is higher than the #3 starter it will be a long one.
LaVelle said after the season that the front office's priority was to go out and make Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober your 4th and 5th starters. Not exactly off to a blazing start and there aren't many 1, 2, or 3 starters left. If there's a season, it sure feels like it's going to be a disaster.

They were still "formulating their plan" while other teams were snapping up every starter worth a damn. I guess they massively misjudged how quickly the market would go. Just more incompetence on top of incompetence. The only thing they can do now is trade for a couple starters, but we know they cling to their prospects like grim death.

I can't find the quote, but I remember reading an article where either Falvey or Levine was saying they were planning to acquire pitching through trades instead of the free-agent market. They claim they have spoken to a number of teams about potential deals. we'll see.

No trades thanks to the lockout, unless it's strictly minor leaguers involved.

There won't be enough time to make a deal before the season starts. They bamboozled everyone with that lie.

it all depends on the timing. whenever they agree to a new CBA, there will have to be some type of a time-table for teams to finalize rosters. without going through the roster of every team, I would bet that a lot of teams have incomplete rosters at this point. So, I assume that there will be some type of a window to make deals and sign players before the season starts - a couple of weeks at the very least.

Once rosters are set, that would have to be followed by some type of "Spring Training" period of at least 3 weeks.

The Mets hired Buck Showalter as Manager, for a franchise struggling for competency & credibility, pretty shrewd move.

Buster Posey retires- one of my favorite recent players - great player and apparently a good dude.

HOF?

in 12 seasons -
3 World Series Ws
7 Time All Star
MVP in 2012

No. He's like Mauer.

Both were great at their peaks, but neither were good enough for long enough to reach HOF status.

They each needed two more, all-star quality years at catcher, playing 130 or more games at the position.
I actually think "just like Mauer" means both will make it to Cooperstown.
Looking good for Posey based on Mauer's pending enshrinement. It will likely come down to Voters determining if the gap from Posey's stats will be overcome by being a key cog in 3 World Series Championships.

To be revisited in 2027. If Posey doesn't get 1st ballot, should have an idea if he will eventually make it to Cooperstown.

Interesting outcome. NL Manager of the Year in 2022, so indeed shrewd in the short term. Buck was then canned after a disappointing 2023.

winning matters, that’s why they play the games.

Buck’s consistently in wearing out his welcome, may be unprecedented?

He’ll die with his boots 🥾 on. How can you not when named Buck?

It certainly does to me, and I presume to the BBWAA. It was certainly a large part of what got Puckett & Morris enshrined.

A bit different voting membership now so I can't say it's exactly alike, but I think Posey gets in by the end of the decade.

Have we learned nothing from the Dobnek Experience?

Tigers sign infield prospect Colt Keith to 6-year, $28.6M deal

DETROIT -- The Tigers made an unusual bet on a player with no major league experience, signing 22-year-old infield prospect Colt Keithto a six-year contract Sunday that guarantees him $28,642,500.

His deal includes three team options that could make it worth $64 million over nine seasons, and the Tigers said there are escalators that increase the value to $82 million over nine years.

Keith is ranked the No. 22 big league prospectby MLB.com.

A left-handed-hitting third baseman and second baseman, Keith is from Zanesville, Ohio, and was a fifth-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft out of Biloxi High School in Mississippi.

He hit .325 with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs in 59 games last year for Double-A Erie then was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on June 26 and batted .287 with 13 home runs and 51 RBIs in 67 games.

Keith gets a $2 million signing bonus and salaries of $2.5 million in 2024, $3.5 million in 2025, $4 million each in 2026 and 2027 and $5 million apiece in 2028 and 2029. Detroit has a $10 million option for 2030 with a $2,642,500 buyout, a $13 million option for 2031 with a $1 million buyout and a $15 million option for 2032 with a $2 million buyout.

The Milwaukee Brewers agreed last month to an eight-year, $82 million contract with 19-year-old outfielder Jackson Chourio, the largest contract for a prospect with no major league service.

Detroit has had losing records in seven straight seasons. The Tigers have not won a World Series since 1984 and have not won an American League pennant since 2012.
