FIRE OC

This falls completely on the coaching staff as others have mentioned. On the first drive, MN ran some creative plays and mixed up the offense. They didn't score, but showed the ability to move the ball. After that drive, the offense became completely predictable. Staff thought they could run away with the game. Never deviated from the plan. This is embarrassing and Sandford/Fleck need to be held accountable by the media/others

Tanner was really good in the first half and (IMO) was neutered by awful play calling in the second half.

Also - please get more RBs some touches. Mo should not have been getting 30+ carries per game, Potts should absolutely not be getting 30+ carries per game. It's too much and it is completely unnecessary.
Tanner was not really good in the first half. What game were you watching?

Offense was really good last week... I'd almost say awesome considering the opponent. Sanford should maybe get a pass for today considering the team lost its best player last week, was without their best WR again, and lost their second best WR during the game. Plus I have to imagine the game plan was to stay as boring as possible and still win. Mission accomplished in that case. If they struggle all season, then sure, maybe time for a change. But let's see a few more weeks as they recalibrate after losing Ibrahim.
Um, but they didn't win so how is it mission accomplished

I think I counted at least 6 dropped passes in a row in the 3rd quarter. More if you count the end of the 2nd quarter. A handful would have been tough catches but good receivers make most of those plays. All those drops really screwed up the offensive rhythm and team play in general. The receivers need to step up. I said the same thing last week.
Morgan had 13 passes total. 6 were not dropped in 1 quarter. No he didn't play great, but this is ridic

The playcalling was criminally inept today. Normally it is just poor. I am literally (not the millenial version of this word) questioning if the OC was trying to lose.

Guys, those posts are from another game this year…

TM2 has sure drawn the ire of a subset of fans this season. I don’t get it. He’s not Graham Mertz bad, despite a mediocre season thus far. The offense as a whole seems to be in disarray, to my eye.

I don't expect Sanford to be fired this week, but I would like a small step. Before next Saturday, I want to hear that Simon will assume playcalling duties. Hell, if I were Simon I would either ask to assume playcalling duties or to lose the title of co-OC. I wouldn't want a title that makes it sound like I am responsible for the product on the field.

How sure are we that this is all Sanford's fault? They show the ability at times to throw the ball down the field, and it seems like in the Miami and BG games, they just implemented a ridiculously simplified offensive game strategy and showed zero ability to make adjustments or adapt.

I guess I think PJ is probably pretty involved in devising the game plan... perhaps more so than some are giving Sanford all the credit for, and as the HC after that dismal offensive first half, you get a little more involved and demanding of your OC, assuming you had previously left it to Sanford to call. One way or another, this is PJ's fault more than anyone else's.

Edited
95% OC, his track record just bears it out.

I think PJ will make a change at the OC position. I expect Simon will call plays next week and we'll find out about it after the Purdue game

I don’t know where to begin with Morgan. I’m starting to think 2019 was an anomaly for him. He’s not nearly as good a QB as that season’s stats would suggest. True, he doesn’t have a Bateman or Johnson to throw too, but Morgan is making poor decisions and missing open receivers when he makes the right decisions. And I’m not talking about just today. I’m not blaming him for the first pick he threw in the fourth. Faelle (sp?) may have had his worst game as a Gopher. He was beat all day. And on that pick Morgan under threw the ball because he couldn’t follow thru,
since his supposedly NFL prospect tackle missed on yet another block. But the second pick is 90% on Morgan. Poor throw. Period.

Now, Sanford and Fleck have to take the hit on this. I’ve seen nothing from the offense since Sanford has been here that makes me feel good about what I’m watching. And that’s with Ibrahim or without him. Someone above said Fleck won’t fire him. Well, why not? He fired his DC mid season, why can’t he fired his OC?

I like Fleck, I really do, but I’m seriously starting to question his on the field football philosophies. Sanford needs to go, Simon needs to take over the offense and Fleck needs to get the hell out of the way. The only involvement Fleck should have on the offense is whether or not to go on fourth down and perhaps the calling of a time outs (and I have concerns here too).

And one more thing. Our special teams still suck with the exception of kickoffs. I know, it’s hard to blame a kid for missing a FG over 50 yards, but Trickett has now missed three field goals and an extra point in 4 games. That’s not good enough. And punting? Shit, we averaged 38 yards a punt today. That’s a joke. The only joke bigger is the fact that we can’t catch punts either. How many yards did we give up today, and all season, because we let punts hit the ground and roll? It’s poor coaching and uncalled for. I don’t care if you never return another one, but don’t let the fucking ball hit the ground. CATCH IT!!!!

Why isn't the team playing RPO anymore? Or did the team change the playback? TM was at best when you leave him with well defined perimeter to make decisions. It seems like Sanford is forcing him to make some play as scripted regardless of what opponent D is giving us. In 2019 it was deadly to blitz TM e.g. PSU game.

I didn't read the first 5 pages, but the part that concerned me much more than the playcalling today was the lack of adjustments to the BGSU game plan to blitz and stunt and try to outrun our linemen.

That's a counter-able strategy in game. And yet the same things were working for them on the first drive as the last drive.

It's also something that will stick out on film to every remaining opponent the Gophers have, so it better get fixed fast, or Tanner Morgan isn't going to make it through the Nebraska game (injury, not benching)

I like fleck, but hiring OC who has a history of messing up teams is highly questionable! OC should be fired right now while he is at the podium talking

What I’m hearing is we need a dual threat QB with an accurate arm and an NFL-level ability to see the entire field at all times with <2 seconds delivery time under imminent threat of a sack from a porous line and blitzing backers and DBs. How many of those are out there?

Maybe help Morgan out?

I don’t know if it’s Morgan or Sanford. Maybe both. But Morgan is broken. His deep ball in 2020 was really bad, and I was giving him a pass, hoping he was injured. But this year he’s not only not throwing a competent deep ball, but he’s wildly missing guys over the middle that he hit at a high rate in 2019.

I initially thought that it was either PJ or Sanford keeping it super vanilla, but now I’m of the belief they are keeping the passing game vanilla and relying on the run game even more than usual, because Morgan just doesn’t have it, and the coaches know and are trying to cover it up.

ain't it funny how us rubes on message boards have a way of sensing these things...like we all were very skeptical from the start on Robb Smith too.

It's hard to call fans of any team "objective" and frequently we're stupid emotional. But we don't have personal connections to these guys either and can sometimes see things that guys in a small industry built on relationships are blind to.

PJ wont fire Sanford. He believe that having QB coach is important. QB coach as OC is also equally important. He might be forced to make changes after the game in Iowa City Snake pit where gophers will be totally outclassed. Not a lot of game left to lose or win at this point. It is tragic that it is happening at year 5 of his tenure here. I think 2019 success got to him somewhat. He has more respect for Kirk than Sanford. Sanford offence is playing what he think PJ like to play.

If that’s the case it’s again on the coaches for not sitting him for a healthy player, physically or mentally. Common denominator.

I don’t know if it’s mental or physical, but the results are in, and he’s not right. I understand PJ is in a tough spot to bench him, but I’m assuming he’s looking the same in practice. And if that’s the case, you can’t keep trotting him out there hoping you can consistently rack up 250 rushing yards a game to give you a chance to win. PJ claims to eat difficult conversations for breakfast. Well, he knows if it’s his OC or his QB, but he’s going to need to have a difficult conversation with one of them before this train comes off the rails.

No excuse for the offense to be this bad. The OC has a taken a competent QB and somehow wrecked him.
Two years ago, many people including myself thought Morgan would be an NFL QB someday. He has regressed to the point right now where you have got to bench him and hopefully someone can come in and rescue the team from disaster. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED???
