Transfer list possibilities, Spring 2020

In all seriousness, Pitino should ask PJi and his crew for some help in setting up virtual visits - thus is a no brainer. 'Get her done
I'm pretty sure the coaching staff knows how to do a virtual visit without any help!

honest question for guys that have seen him play/know more about him....can this kid play significant minutes at the big ten level next year already? can be relied on as a solid bench player the next 2 years? PG? If Jamal is as good as we are hoping would another point guard be needed? Esepcailly when you already have greenlee burning a hole on the bench?

obviously if Carr leaves that would be a whole new ball game but im asusming he will be back for sure
I really think if we take Wishart it would be a mistake. I know people on this board like his game and he is a local kid, but it wasn't like he was lighting it up at Georgia Southern by averaging 9 ppg. He also struggled in his games against Auburn and Georgia, the closest comparison we have to big ten level competition. Seems like if we took this kid it is because we struck out on anyone who could make an impact and we are going to be screwed next year with or without Carr.

Wishart could play some minutes. I don't think he's a starting level guard on a top 5 team in the league, but I do think he could contribute. Whether he wants that role of a guy coming off the bench is a different discussion and I do not know the answer.

This transfer market is wild. No way of knowing where all these guys are gonna land. Consistent portal entries everyday. We're gonna get 1 or 2, we'll just have to wait and see who they are. Would be nice to see a list of guys we're currently targeting updated consistently. Udeze seems like a lot of convo and interest, also we recruited out of high school. I'll go Udeze and El-Amin. Markusson too. I just don't know if any of these guys are good enough to come in and impact enough to make us a respectable team. Landers Nolley would if he somehow pulls that off, or Carton, but I've heard nothing of Carton interest in us.

Trey Murphy of Rice is interesting.

The concern, of course--based on past mistakes by this staff--is that none of the Gophers' "bigger" targets will pan out, and Wishart will get tired of waiting and go elsewhere.

Why in the world dies Gopher sports post that he is lower in the pecking order. If I'm him, I'd find that at a minimum somewhat insulting.

Honest answer: I see him as a 9-man rotation player on a good team who can make plays and shots that help you win. We didn't have 9 guys of that caliber on the roster this year.

So with things being so crazy ... what if we get serious interest in a PG that would help? But are we still saving Carr's spot? Would that become a problem?

Of course we're saving Carr's spot. 0% chance we pull his scholarship. If a PG wants to transfer here, it will likely be someone like Wishart.

Transfer Drew Peterson is already receiving major interest

One of the top talents from the mid-major level on the traditional transfer market is Drew Peterson. Peterson decided to enter into the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon. At around 6-foot-8 and 185 pounds, Peterson is a unique talent who can play all over the perimeter and has a track record of success.

With a diverse skillset, Peterson averaged 11.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as a sophomore at Rice. He shot 41 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the foul line.

Upon entering the transfer portal, things picked up in a big way for Peterson, and he found his phone very busy.

“I have been talking to my AAU coach and my parents for a few days, so I expected it to be a busy day and it has been that,” explained Peterson. “I have been on the phone non-stop since noon. It has been a busy, busy day.”

When asked who has reached out, Peterson said, “I’ve talked to Virginia Tech, Stanford, Minnesota, Cincinnati, Creighton, Tulane, UCSB and San Diego.”

Peterson went on, “The head coaches that I’ve talked to are (Richard) Pitino at Minnesota and (Joe) Pasterneck at UCSB.”

Go Gophers!!

Does a Wishart transfer ultimately lead to a Greenlee transfer, more or less maintaining the scholarship?

Not sure. I'd look it up if I was concerned that he might actually leave.
Do these coaches really sit kids down, Greenlee in this case, and take away their scholarship? I assume it's more of a conversation about how he never sees Greenlee playing here and what not but overall that seems like a difficult situation to try and force a kid out of scholarship that you recruited. I can't see it.

What is the deadline for when he would have to declare that he is not returning?

June 3, but he's not going anywhere. He's told the coaching staff he'd like to come back but is putting his name in the draft process to get info/evaluation from NCAA-appointed agents.

I haven't seen him play, but anyone with height, skills, and an 82% ft mark is worth a look.

Some coaches do but pitino doesn't seem to operate that way.

There is no way, if Wishart is playing here we are in big trouble.

Trey Murphy is the Rice player teams want. He and his family are reaching out to the schools that he likes.

Saw drew peterson play a bunch of games in high school. Good shooter with nice size. Not sure if hes our saviour, but maybe he can be a nice role player here. There's definately better out there.

I see it as Greenlee was an insurance policy (one with a very small payout) last year. Carr was our only PG and Pitino didn't want to eat 2 scholarships so he found the best PG he could to salvage any sort of depth at a thin position. It's not like the alternatives at any other positions were any better.

I am guessing that if Pitino goes for a PG Greenlee sees the writing on the wall and the conversation never needs to happen. Plus, wasn't Greenlee's old man disgruntled last year anyway over BJ not getting enough run? Hard to believe he'd be upset and vocal about it BJ wasn't, at least internally.

I’m glad to hear it’s that simple.

Just odd that he took the time and effort to make a custom graphic Tweet in the form of a good bye to the program and fans, and worded it completely opposite of what you say here. But, I’ll probably be wrong. Not my first time either.

This is how I view Greenlee: we struck out on option A, B, C, D...etc. The fact that he was still unsigned in June meant his recruiting had not gone the way he planned either (he had an early offer from Iowa that dried up). We gave him a one year tryout to see if he is B1G material. He played 50 total minutes, which indicates how much Pitino trusted him. I keep seeing people say that we don't know what he is because he didn't play. We fans might not, but Pitino does -- you can get a pretty good idea from a year of practice what a player will bring in a game.

A bad freshman season doesn't always mean there isn't a future (Damian Johnson is our best recent example) but it isn't a good sign. I would think that Greenlee would want to transfer down a level so he could see some playing time. Looking at it from his perspective, what if Pitino gets canned after next year? Will a new coach have any loyalty to him at all?

That said I would have thought he would have announced his intentions by now if he was going to transfer. Maybe he sticks it out for another year, especially with all the uncertainty (COVID-19, Carr's possible departure). Whatever happens, I wish him well as a Gopher or if he goes elsewhere.

If anybody cares, our two most recent comps to Greenlee are Jamir Harris and Ahmad Gilbert.

Jamir Harris was a priority recruit as I remember, but struggled in his freshman year (shot 35% from the floor), averaging 14 minutes per game. He announced he was transferring on April 6th. He sat out a year, and played 32 minutes per game (11 ppg) for American in the Patriot League.

Side note, if we can point to a single recruiting class that was the reason Pitino is fired next season, Jamir Harris and Isaiah Washington, who should be our seniors next year, would be it.

Ahmad Gilbert was a later spring commit (April 22nd) and actually played two seasons for us, but he actually played less his sophomore year (75 minutes). He announced his transfer on March 28th and sat out a year. He played last year at Rider but didn't see the floor much and wasn't effective. He didn't appear on their roster this year so he must have just decided to graduate after 4 years in college.
