Sneakers is a sneaky great movie looking back it.

Just look at the cast.

If one is aligned with the Century starting in the year 2000 we hit the Quarter Mark/25 Years this past January 1.

As such I have come up with my Top 25 Favorite Movies for this Century.

1. The Royal Tenenbaums
2. Into the Wild
3. Almost Famous
4. Sing Sing
5. The Fabelmans
6. Licorice Pizza

Those Top 6 I feel pretty strongly about and all receive consideration for my Favorite Movies of all time.

7. Moonrise Kingdom
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
9. Boyhood
10. American Hustle
11. Nightmare Alley
12. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood...
13. Lost in Translation
14. Summer of Soul
15. The Worst Person in the World
16. The Lobster
17. Anatomy of a Fall
18. A Real Pain
19. Ex Machina
20. Adventureland

All of those are just a cut below my Top 6, but still really good.

21. The Banshees of Inisherin
22. Belfast
23. Dunkirk
24. Superbad
25. Hugo

The last 5 I have labored over with perhaps another dozen of so that I considered.

Whew, I think this might have been grueling to cut down than my Top 10 list. I have a heavy lean towards the beginning of the quarter century with my selections, but here goes:
Top 5 (no particular order here, other than alphabetically)
1. Almost Famous
2. City of God
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
4. Kill Bill, Volume 1
5. The Wrestler

Next 18:
A Quiet Place
Hell or High Water
The Holdovers
Little Miss Sunshine
Mad Max: Fury Road
Midnight in Paris
Nebraska
Parasite
Promising Young Woman
Roma
Royal Tenenbaums
Sicario
Slumdog Millionaire
Spotlight
Tropic Thunder
The Way Way Back
Zodiac
Zone of Interest

Final Two (which I cheat a bit--I'm going with trilogies that I couldn't parse out):
The Bourne Trilogy (through Ultimatum)
The Dark Knight Trilogy

If I hadn't made a rule to limit myself to one film per director, it'd been tougher--Tarantino, Nolan, Wes Anderson all have more than one worthy entry. Surprised myself with not having Linklater represented, and it was close, but not quite.

Interesting only 3 that are on both of our lists, but you had 9 others that were strongly on my consideration list and at least that many more that I really liked.

City of God is one of the only 2 that I have not seen at all, I need to seek that one out.

Love seeing The Way Way Back here. Just an awesome movie and criminally underrated.

I thought it was a worthwhile film, but can I think of others with similar themes that do it much better.

Specifically, Adventureland.

Regarding "similarities between The Way Way Back and Adventureland" I threw it into google and AI came up with:

"Adventureland" and "The Way Way Back" are similar in that they are both coming-of-age stories set during the summer, focusing on a teenage protagonist navigating awkward social situations while working a low-level job at a local amusement park, leading to personal growth and self-discovery through encounters with unique characters, often including a more mature woman who becomes a significant influence.

Key similarities:

  • Summer setting and amusement park job:
Both films feature a teenage protagonist working at a summer amusement park, which serves as a backdrop for their experiences and interactions with various people.
  • Awkward social situations:
The protagonists in both films face uncomfortable social dynamics, including dealing with family issues and navigating romantic interests within their limited social circle.
  • Coming-of-age theme:
Both movies are centered around the protagonist's personal growth and maturation as they navigate the challenges of adolescence.
  • Compelling female character:
Each film features a significant female character who becomes a mentor or love interest for the protagonist, providing them with a sense of guidance and empowerment.
Key differences:
  • Tone:
"Adventureland" has a slightly more nostalgic and bittersweet tone, while "The Way Way Back" leans towards a more comedic and lighthearted style.

  • Social context:
"Adventureland" is set in the 1980s and touches on themes of economic hardship, whereas "The Way Way Back" is more contemporary and focuses on family dynam

Adventureland was OK. Gonna have to go ahead and disagree that it's anywhere near TWWB. Sam Rockwell alone elevates any movie to another level.

A hockey rube without "Youngblood"???

It even included Keanu Reeves' movie debut as the goalie on the team. A really cheesy 80's flick and loved every minute of it.

I thought Goon sucked but that's just me. Red Army doc is excellent
By "underrated" for hockey movies, it's a sliding scale. I liked Goon better than Youngblood & Mystery Alaska.

No argument on Sam Rockwell, he's generally good to great.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was the closest to any making my Top 25/2000s list.

I've never seen Adventureland--I think I have it mixed up in my head with the Eisenberg movie where he's fighting zombies and I wasn't interested in that. I'll need to give it a shot.

I'll echo WAG in stating that it's going to be a pretty high bar to clear TWWB, mainly because of Rockwell's performance, but also Steve Carrel's portrayal of the asshole boyfriend, done despicably well.

We shall agree to disagree. With that said I may have to give Goon another chance. It's been at least 10 years since I last watched it

You're thinking of Zombieland! :ROFLMAO: I actually loved that movie too,. It's really funny with a great cast.

Another common aspect between The Way Way Back & Adventureland is that there is a generally well liked affable actor, who plays the role of asshole boyfriend. Steve Carrel in the former, and Ryan Reynolds in the later.

Adventureland is a pretty strong cast.

Easily in my All Time Top 5 soundtracks as well, which I am sure has a big influence to where I rate the film as a whole.
