Your favourite movies please!

I would struggle to pick a list like that and you are right it changes with time though some remain eternal favourites.

The Shining is one of my all time favourite movies. Did you like the recent remake?
Doctor Sleep? No. I totally forgot all about it. You?

Check out if you haven't seen it already. Room 327.

Swedish child pop star Amy Diamond has impressed me as an actress and in her movie debut she plays this anorectic teenage girl trying to hide her way of living.

" Just as Stella enters the exciting world of adolescence she discovers that her big sister and role model Katja is hiding an eating disorder. A story about jealousy, love and betrayal. "

Loved both and the sequel of course starred the latest swedish actor export in Rebecca Ferguson who is related to Sarah Ferguson the Duchess of York.
I watched the directors cut of Doctor Sleep.

For any fans of swedish long monologue movies that in some ways feel a bit like Bergman's "Scenes from a marriage" then this one is right up your alley.

" Two couples, old friends, end up in a heated debate over adultery at a dinner party. "

The fantastic danish trilogy Pusher introduced me to actors Kim Bodnia and Mads Mikkelsen but it was actor Zlatko Buric who despite playing brutal serbian druglord Milo made me like the character and especially in the third movie.
Danish movies never disappointed me and since my girlfriend is half danish I'd might as well not complain.
In many ways three very different stories somehow focusing on various people in it and the third one has one of the most brutal slaughter scenes when they cut up a man to hide any evidence of the murder.
Pusher and Pusher 2 comes with english subs but in the Pusher 3 movie the subs are delayed a bit but they can be found on Netflix.

So who of all the masses of Skarsgård actors is my favourite?

It's actually Gustaf who has always performed well in everything he has been in over the years. In this one, that was shot before Rebecca Ferguson launched her international career after a long career in Sweden, he plays a controlling man whose love for a girl turns into obsession.

" This is a story of IDA and KRISTER. It's about a relationship that goes to hell. They are both crazy in love but manage to strangle the supply of oxygen and adapt to each other in a way that will lead to catastrophic consequences."

I guess you all labelled people trolls online including me but have you ever experienced a real one or ever understood that they exist and that they like the small people you american confuse with aliens live side by side with us and nature?

Thought not!

Well, swedish author Ajvide Lindqvist did though the appearance of them in this movie is greatly inspired by a boat accident where his dad died and was found in the water. The author insisted on seeing the body despite being told he shouldn't cause a lake corpse is not the prettiest sight.

Tina, who has grotesque, almost animal-like physical features, has always felt self-conscious about her looks. Regardless, she has: a live-in boyfriend, Roland, a dog trainer, at her isolated house in the woods, although they have never had sex, and Tina’s father, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, believing he is solely using her; the unconditional love and support of her father; a small group of friends; and the admiration of her bosses and coworkers in her job as a customs agent at the airport, as she is literally able to “smell” human emotions, especially guilt and fear. It is using that innate ability that she stops a seemingly straight-laced person entering the country, he who was found to be carrying a memory card containing child pornography. As such, her immediate supervisor, Agneta, places her on a small investigative unit to discover the producers of this material. Tina is surprised when she is found to be incorrect about another person going through customs, Vore, …

I might as well throw in another movie they made from a Lindqvist story which in some ways reminds me of my childhood and schooldays cause the boy looks a bit like I did that age.
Forget the awful american remake cause "dude you cannot grasp Sweden and foreign things when you only get world news in 60 seconds and at the same time have to force an awful burger down your neck".

"VI" is that roman numeral "6" or the letters V & I as in short for "Violet" or "Vivion"?

Controversial to say that American Beauty is a favourite movie with Kevin Spacey in it and all. But for me that movie is amazing in so many ways. Funny thing with Spacey is that he has this swedish friend who has this amazing house in the Stockholm archipelago. They met at some airport and became instant friends and ever since Spacey has gone to visit the swedish man and his family.

I can understand one's apprehensions given the Spacey revelations (and the subject matter itself), but it is a great movie. I went ahead and listed LA Confidential in my top 10.

Maybe think of it more of an Annette Bening movie, perhaps my favorite American actress. Short list of her must see films in addition to American Beauty:

The Grifters
Bugsy
The American President
The Kids are All Right
Films Stars Don't Die in Liverpool

I hope to see her in the movie "Hope Gap" soon and she is one of my favourite american actresses too.

Moving onto another movie featuring Gustaf Skarsgård based on a novel by controversial swedish author Jan Guillou.

It is based on the real life story of when Guillou went to a boarding school and it later turned into a political debate leading to the boarding school in question getting closed down for good.

"A teenage boy expelled from school for fighting arrives at a boarding school where the systematic bullying of younger students is encouraged as a means to maintain discipline, and decides to fight back."

evil-movie-poster-2003-1020678868.jpg

One of the teachers later won the Nobel prize in litterature and most of the students were the children of Sweden's elite and later held high positions within industry and finance and politics.

Moving on to a swedish coming out/trans movie that got a lot of attention after it premiered starring transgender actress Saga Becker.

"A love story between two young men where one is the androgynous Sebastian and one is Andreas who is not gay. They form a unity. It’s them against the polished Swedish IKEA society. They dream about escaping boredom and the risk of becoming what everyone else is. And then there is Ellie – the superwoman growing inside of Sebastian who Andreas loves and fears. This is the summer when everything happens and both of them will choose paths that will determinate their lives forever. It’s a battle for love where Sebastian finally has to realise that he has to let Ellie loose, find the strength within himself and not let his happiness depend on someone else. "

I mentioned this movie in my swedish music videos thread.

Tough guy Mikael Persbrandt is most loved for playing the cop Gunvald Larsson in the popular Beck movies but in this one he plays a suicidal man.

" Thomas gets behind the wheel and embarks on a journey to connect one final time with each of the meaningful people in his life. Hating the man he's become, he ends the tour by committing suicide—-an event foretold in the film's opening narration."

dag_och_natt.jpg

There really is no difference between the actor Persbrandt and the type of person he is in private. Always controversial and always involved with ladies though his latest one has been by his side the longest I believe. She is the daughter of swedish musician Ulf Lundell who is like a swedish version of Bruce Springsteen when it comes to the music.

Maria Bonnevie who features in this movie lived with him for years and they had a very public break up cause going through it they were acting against each other in a theatre play and the relationship was always stormy.

This movie features some of Sweden's finest actors including the late Michael Nyqvist and Pernilla August most known for her role as Princess Leia and her Bergman movies of course.

Before the two friends Alexander Skarsgård and Joel Kinnaman headed to Hollywood they made a name for themselves back home in Sweden. Kinnaman got his breakthrough in this one that became a trilogy.

When Alexander and Joel are not shooting movies they try and go to as many football games as they can as they both follow Stockholm club Hammarby IF. Here are some clips of Alexander Skarsgård with the Hammarby hooligans getting the singing going while being very drunk.

Finally a video of Alexander from this summer when Zlatan Ibrahimovic trained with the club during lockdown. Alexander Skarsgård just being one of the lads back home.

Yep, blown away is the best way to describe how I always felt watching a Mike Leigh movie. I always loved a good old english kitchen sink drama and feel that Leigh falls into that category most of the time.

My number 2 favourite Leigh movie however is this one:

All_or_Nothing_DVD_cover.jpg

Incredibly bleak in a way that I like and reminded me of people and situations I found myself in when in Manchester back in the 90's. Leigh is of course a Salford man but I always preferred the people of Stretford or as Morrissey called it "Stressford".

Watch it here:

I was down in elephant and castle before it gentrified.

I was down in elephant and castle before it gentrified.
Ah yes, the gentrification everywhere. Jenna is on about that all the time and Boyle Heights got trendy for the hipster elite and as a latina she hates that.

I feel like I've been all over London but then again my dad took me there almost from before I can remember. We took the boat from Gothenburg to Felixstowe and then later Harwich. Before I travelled on my own and took a flight.

Him and me went to a lot of museums and the war museum is in those parts. Then we went to take a look at football stadiums of course. Sometimes when there was a game and sometimes when there wasn't and as swedes we were liked and welcomed anywhere and they gladly let us in.

What did you do there?

The heart of Sweden and swedish culture lies in Dalecarlia where midsummer traditions never die. Another movie diving down into the swedish psyche.

" Mia, who's living in Stockholm, comes home to her small childhood town to celebrate her father's birthday. There she finds herself looked down-upon by her oldest sister; and she has to confront both her sisters when her father decides to give her the cabin by the lake, a place sought-after by both of her sisters. She visits some people who are still living in the small town, and all seem quite content with the lives they're leading. However, as the story progresses it becomes more and more noticeable that none of the characters feel good about how they live. "

I transported my dads urn up there last summer in July which was his wish though he was not from there but worked there and met my mother there before they moved down here.

He is now resting not far from the grave of world famous opera singer Jussi Björling.

Tom Hanks latest movie will be a remake of this swedish movie from 2015 where he will play Ove.

A_Man_Called_Ove.png

"Ove is a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbour from hell.” However, behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heart-warming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations."

Starring the always incredible actor Rolf Lassgård. Based on the novel by Fredrik Backman. Tom Hanks once surprised english singer Morrissey with a visit after his gig was over which surprised Morrissey cause he never thought Hanks was into his music but it turned out he is a huge fan.

well, if this thread is getting re-activated: "favorite" movies is very different than best movies.

there are movies I really enjoy watching even though, by technical or artistic standards, they are not "good" movies. they're just fun to watch. it's like the difference between a big greasy cheeseburger and a well-prepared steak. the steak is 'better,' but the cheeseburger is just fun and makes you feel good, even if it isn't necessarily good for you.

I really like cheesy 1950's monster movies. a few favorites in no particular order:

The Thing from another world
Them!
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
It came from beneath the Sea
Tarantula
The Giant Claw - best bad monster movie ever - google the trailer and you'll see why -
The Deadly Mantis
Gorgo
The Giant Behemoth
20 Million Miles to Earth
Godzilla (the 1954 Japanese version)
The Monster that Challenged the World

Almost Famous
Goodfellas
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Dogma

Aliens
Boogie Nights
Dazed & Confused
Gladiator

Quick & easy on YouTube:

Phone Call From A Stranger
1952

Watch it all the way through on a lazy afternoon or evening. To me, it's unforgettable.

Black Or White

Starring Kevin Costner is my favorite drama movie of the last 10 years or so.

I did monster movies earlier. Here are a few of my favorite Westerns.

Stagecoach
The Man from Laramie
Winchester '73
Ride Lonesome
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
My Darling Clementine
