"Deal was in the works

New Mexico Athletic Director McKinley Boston confirmed that New Mexico State and the Gophers agreed to a home-and-home series, with the first game at New Mexico State in 2013 and at Minnesota in 2014. Boston confirmed the news that appeared in my Sunday column, along with the fact that the Gophers had scheduled future home games with South Dakota University and Fresno State. Under an arrangement made months ago, New Mexico State and the Gophers will exchange $200,000 checks as a part of the payment with neither school getting an edge. Meanwhile North Carolina, who the Gophers paid $800,000 to get out of the home-and-home series with them, has scheduled Old Dominion to replace the Gophers in their home game next year."

Teague told the media yesterday that no deal was in place, yet Boston tells Sid that a deal has been in place "months ago." One of three things happened:

1. Teague misled the media yesterday
2. Boston is wrong and a deal was made today and not "months ago"
3. Sid is wrong in his reporting and no deal is in place

Go Gophers!!

Fresno State. That's a little better.

All this because we are afraid of what a game at mighty unc might do to our program. This is too strange.

Well ain't that a frosty Friday. Teague saying yesterday that it was not etched in stone. When, yes it was. Norwood is the new spin doctor of the B1G. I may make the trip because of the great golf courses ....

I will wait for a confirm from another source. Makes no sense.

Go Gophers!!

Teague told Charley Walters that we'd be taking a "financial hit"on this. Maybe the deal was done but not signed yet. Maybe that's what he was trying to stand on. Wasn't there an "armchair A.D." thread already? Turns out it's the guys claiming that the U was going to "make out okay on this"who were sitting in the armchair.

I can't wait to renew our rivalry with the Wolfpack!

We get NMSU in 2013.

Then we get them again in 2014!

Then we get them at home again in 2016!

Who is up for a late August road trip to beautiful Las Cruces!?!?

(whatever happened to smaller programs paying 2-for-1 one games or not hosting bigger programs at all?)

The deal could have been struck this morning, thus Teague is not lying. Yesterday it was not done. He did not say they were not talking, just that a deal was not in place.

That and all the hassle he has gone through lately, he was probably a little gun shy.

I'll be honest, I wasn't upset with the initial news of paying 800k to get out of UNC. The fact that we are trading it for a different home & home is far more upsetting to me. I can understand wanting another home game, but this makes no sense to me. My brain hurts now trying to think about what their thought process for this was.

Kill: "I don't want to play UNC. I want 4 home games, and I want it to be against a school I've never heard of before. See if you can get Savannah State over here. I hear they lost by like 80 this year."
Teague: "Alright, it's done. We're gonna have to fork over some money to get out of this, but we'll make some back with the added home game."
Kill: "Awesome, see ya next week."
**Next Week**
Teague: "Jerry, well I got out of the UNC games. Problem is, I just signed a deal that sends you to NMSU next year, instead."
Kill: "****, that's not what I said, Norwood"
Teague: "Well they're really struggling and I wanted to help them out, and besides, I've got a great excuse to tell the Media. We'll just say that we're building the program from scratch and that it takes time."
Kill: "That sounds great, I don't think I've told them that enough yet. We can make it fly once more. I'll make sure I crush NMSU next year just like I did UNLV. We won't go easy on them this time."
Teague: "We're doing a bang up job here, Jerry. This football stuff is easy. I don't know why Joel and Tim never figured it out. Gin and Tonic?"

This is real life folks.

I would be very pissed if Teague canceled the UNC game without another deal already signed. That's incredibly reckless.

But the good news is we will be so fresh and confident and healthy come big ten season

Yep, and don't forget 4-0 and hosting Iowa at the Bank on Sept. 28, 2013. Hopefully a night game. We know you'll be there.

So if we now give new mex state $400,000 maybe we could switch to a home and home with Idaho state or something.

I figured it out. We are doing all this to play mind games with Wisconsin. We are figuring they will be so busy laughing at us they will forget to prepare for the game and we can go out there and steal one.

On a serious note if this is true good god is this pathetic. How in the hell does a cash strapped athletic department justify throwing away 800K in the hopes of getting one extra W on the schedule? One thing is certain in all this the honeymoon is over for Kill from a public standpoint. He will still have his loyal supporters that feel he can do no wrong but for the media, general public, and a good portion of gopher hole this is a pathetic move and it signals that our head coach doesn't believe we can be competitive until 2015 at the earliest.

I still think there has to be more to this story. I can't believe that our new AD and President would agree to throw away 800K just to avoid playing a decent ACC team. There has to be something here that is not being reported, departments like ours are not in a position to throw away money like this. Any AD worth a damn would have told the head coach to be a man and get his team ready to play the game on the schedule. I could see some rational when we were getting an extra home game out of the deal....man we thought it was embarrassing under Maturi and Brewster.....JK and NT are not off to a great start.

I bet this will all be forgotten if we beat Wisconsin Saturday. If we keep losing this story will never end.

New Mexico is the Wolfpack
New Mexico State is the Aggies
The game will be played on September 7th, so you better bring the golf clubs if you are headed there in late August.
I have been to Las Cruces several times, some decent golf and college bars and THAT IS IT. El Paso is about 45 minutes away.

This. Las Cruces is a dump and El Paso is a crap hole as well. If you want some fun though, you can cross the border to Juarez. I just hope you can dodge bullets and can fight off kidnappers in broad daylight.

New Mexico is the Lobos.

lol...these New Mexico teams are such jokes we can't even come up with the team mascots on the board....

If we get blown out on Saturday the loss combined with this scheduling crap will have this place in full on melt down mode. Hard to believe it was just a few short weeks ago that we were all feeling pretty good about the 4-0 start and the great play by the defense against Syracuse. Man that seems like a long time ago given what has happened these past few weeks.

I'm excited, I can't wait to make the 20-30 mile drive down to Ciudad Juarez to check out how the drug cartels opperate as part of the fabulous weekend in NM. Maybe Creative Charters can make some sort of transport deal with the cartels in exchange for a tour of their underground tunnels and drug and weapon supplies. The tour will be real and it will be raw but most likely it will be real raw.

Sorry, my sarcasm was apparently lost on most of the folks here. I'll try to lay it on thicker.

NMSU is irrelevant, that is the point of my post.

Sorry for the confusion.

If only we had been 4-0 going into conference play this year, imagine how confident we could have been and how much better the games against Iowa and NW would have gone. Oh wait....

So.....we won't be making that money back then?

We won't be getting it back in the form of an additional home game it would appear. But hey is this really a problem? I mean we have one of those athletic departments that can just print money, 800K, that is just a drop in the bucket when you make the kind of revenue we do....
