Speaking of Abbey Murphy:

"Abbey Murphy is hockey’s next great pest: ‘There is truly no one like her’"

Defenders Chloe Primerano and Gracie Graham of Hockey Canada (U18) headed to Minnesota Gophers. Both shoot left:

Chloe Primerano: For the second straight year Primerano has been named the Female U18 Prep MVP Award Winner. It was a historic season for Primerano as she set single season Female U18 Prep records with 35 goals, 54 assists and 89 points, smashing the previous record of 63. Her 137 career points are third among all skaters and most among all defensemen. Primerano is committed to the University of Minnesota for next season after capturing MVP, Best Defender, Tournament Allstar and Leading Scorer honours at the 2024 U18 Women’s Worlds, where she set the record for most points by a defender at one U18 Women’s Worlds (16) and most points by a Canadian at one U18 Women’s Worlds

Graham finished second among defensemen and third among all skaters with 59 points in 29 games. The University of Minnesota commit has tallied 104 points in 81 games with RHA Kelowna over her three year career with the team. Graham has represented Team Canada twice at the U18 Women's World Championships, winning Gold in 2023 and bronze in 2024. This is her second individual CSSHL award, having been named the Top Freshman Award winner in 2021/22.

Gophers singing class also includes Minnesota Ms. Hockey Ayla Puppe too!!!

And Hockey Canada goaltender Hannah Clark!

And Minnetonka's Kendra Distad!

And Elk River's Carly Humphrey!

And Moorhead's Kate Kosobud!

Natalie Darwitz, former Gophers star player and assistant coach, is featured today in the Star Tribune for her work as PWHL - Minnesota's general manager:

In the PWHL, Minnesota hosts Toronto tonight in game four of the first-to-win-3 series. Toronto leads the series 2-1.

Minnesota won their first ever home playoff game last Monday at Xcel Energy Center in St Paul.

Toronto will be without their best player Natalie Spooner, the PWHL points and goals leader, after suffering an injury last Monday on this clean hit from former Gopher Grace Zumwinkle, no penalty. We never would wish an injury on a player but it happens.

I was at the game. The refs were mostly letting the players play, including a couple big hits by Toronto not called. Toronto was more physical.

The winner of the series will face Boston after an unexpected sweep of Montreal.

Two former Andover players came up big tonight in the double-overtime win over Toronto!

1. Claire Butorac scored the winning Minnesota goal. Great assist from Liz Schepers.

2. Maddie Rooney is sensational in goals. Wow.

Tonight, four former Gophers played at the same time, on one line shift, for PWHL Minnesota.

Up next: winner-take-all game five in Toronto.

Maddie Rooney is amazing. In this playoff series she made 65 saves on 66 shots against the top seed opponent. She earned two shutouts in a row, including tonight's double-overtime shutout.

Maddie Rooney earlier this season against NY:

Live in an hour and a half, the deciding PWHL game that will send one team to the first ever PWHL championship game, the Walter Cup. 6 PM CST.

Former Gopher TAYLOR HEISE with the winning goal over #1 seed Toronto. WHAT A SNIPE!!

Minnesota advances to the Walter Cup championship against Boston!

Heise was the #1 overall draft pick in the first PWHL draft.

Heise scored again on an empty netter.

Four former Gophers started on the first line tonight: Boreen, Heise, Zumwinkle and Stecklein.

Minnesota switches up the lineup. Former Gopher Pannek plays on the first line too. Only 3 former-Gopher forwards can be on the first line at a time.

"The scene came to Taylor Heise in a dream. The PWHL Minnesota forward pictured her team scoring on the power play Friday in Toronto, during the decisive Game 5 of the playoff semifinals.

That seemed unlikely for a group that went 5-for-61 on the power play in the regular season. Winning the series seemed like a long shot as well, after Minnesota was shut out in the first two games. But Heise turned her dreaming into doing, scoring the winning goal on the power play to give Minnesota a 4-1 victory and send it to the Walter Cup finals."

"PWHL Minnesota pulled off the upset — and the reverse sweep — against No. 1 Toronto with a 4-1 win in Game 5 on Friday night... It’s a massive win for Minnesota after limping into the playoffs on a five-game losing streak and dropping the first two games of the semifinals. And a shock for Toronto, which entered the playoffs as the No. 1 team in the league and got to choose its semifinal opponent — No. 4 Minnesota."
-- NY Times, Hailey Salvian

Toronto fans say Toronto has a choke curse. Here we go again. Toronto fans are losing it right now. An all-USA hockey championship??? Montreal was swept. #1 Toronto was upset.

With mostly Minnesota players, Minnesota advances to the championship! And some other excellent players too! Lots of players make a big impact for Minnesota.

Former Gophers great Amanda Kessel has declared for the draft. She's an executive for the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins and didn't declare for the last draft.

She won the Patty Kazmaier Award as a Minnesota Gopher. She was a star on the international scene and then partly disappeared due to ongoing concussions symptoms. She came roaring back as arguably the most impactful USA star player on her return.

New York PWHL would be best positioned to draft her #1 overall, finishing last in the league this season.

Former Gopher Taylor Heisi scored twice and an assist but Minnesota fell to Boston by 1 goal in game one. Goaltender Roonie for Minnesota game up a couple ones she should have stopped.

Boston was physical, leading in hits 35 to 15. Minnesota didn't convert on power plays.

Minnesota tied the series in Boston. It now comes back to Minnesota.

Sophie Jaques (Ohio State) scored two goals for Minnesota. Nicole Hensley (Team USA) earned the shutout. Michela Cava (from Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored the first and game-winning goal.

Earlier this season Minnesota and Boston made a blockbuster trade. Minnesota received a rookie defender who scores, Jaques. She won the Patty Kazmeier Award as the best college player. Jaques wasn't doing much as a rookie. Boston wanted to win now or risk missing the playoffs.

Boston received forward Susanna Tapani, striking gold when she twice scored a game-winning playoff goal in overtime over Montreal.

Short-term vs long-term value.

POTENTIALLY THE CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BE DECIDED SUNDAY AT XCEL ENERGY CENTER. BE THERE!

Former Gophers strike big in Minnesota's 4-1 win over Boston. With a win Sunday at Xcel Energy Center, Minnesota will win the Walter Cup championship.

Former Gophers sniper Taylor Heise opened the scoring after just one minute.

Heise was the #1 overall draft pick, led the NCAA in scoring for Gophers, and won the Patty Kazmaier Award (best player in college).

And then former Gopher Grace Zumwinkle iced it with this spectacular play. Late in the game, Boston pulled the goalie and attacked 6-4 because Minnesota had a player in the penalty box. Zumwinkle broke loose for a jailbreak goal against Hillary Knight trying to stop her, kind of a famous star player. In the PWHL, a shorthanded goal frees the player from the box. That iced the game.

Zumwinkly was nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Award twice while a Gopher. She's a do everything well player, including defense, not as sniper flashy as Taylor Heise. Zumwinkle is a finalist for PWHL Rookie of the Year.

The crowd was chanting, "We want the cup. We want the cup."

Minnesota advances to within one game of the championship. They play Sunday at Xcel Energy Center.

Michela Cava and Taylor Heise both had a goal and an assist to lead Minnesota to a 4-1 victory over Boston on Friday night....

Minnesota sported the best record in the league before a nearly month-long break for international play. The club lost all five of its matches after returning but still managed to grab the final playoff spot.

Besides Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle, two other former Gophers playing big roles for Minnesota include:

Lee Stecklein, a shutdown defensive player. She's probably USA's best shutdown defender.

Minnesota as a team usually plays good defense. Minnesota has a terrific penalty kill coach Mira Jalosuo who played for the Gophers and a star defender for Finland.

Kelly Pannek, another Gopher great from a golden era of winning, she does everything well. She was 3rd for points on the team this season. She has 3 assists in the playoffs.

Forward Abigail Boreen was a key contributor to Minnesota Gopher's high scoring attack offense that by far led the NCAA in scoring. She played in the PWHL playoff series against Toronto but not the championship series against Boston because she wasn't originally drafted, limits on her playing time.

Taylor Heise:

Former Gopher great Amanda Kessel has made herself eligible to the draft. She worked in an executive role, special assistant to the general manager, this last year for the Pittsburgh Penguins and did not play the inaugural season.

Usually I'd say Kessel would be the first pick but the talent coming out is terrific, players like Sarah Fillier at the top of the list (see link) to Wisconsin's Britta Curl all the way down at #11.

The championship game streams free at YouTube:

The crowd is going to a factor. The lower bowl is sold out except for a pair in the top row of a corner. They opened club seating that's about sold out on the sidelines. This as of the early morning of the game at 5 PM. More tickets will sell today.

The X will be rocking! "We want the cup. We want the cup!"

You be the judge. Hard to say. Minnesota's winning goal was called off for interference with the goalie. If the player is pushed into the goalie it's not interference. Watch the replay.

Look at the Boston defender's stick. Did Boston pull down the Minnesota player?

Former Minnesota Gophers Taylor Heise named playoffs MVP. Heise had a shoulder injury part of the regular season and then turned it on in the playoffs. Several players were worthy including Michela Cava, very much a team effort including a strong defense.

Minnesota dominated Boston in the final game. Minnesota outshot Boston 44 to 17! You can watch the replay on YouTube. The Boston goaltender Frankel gave an amazing performance as Minnesota pelted her in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

I was strongly unhappy with the way the previous game ended on a called off winning Minnesota goal and Boston win, all those people at the game in Minnesota let down and smell of -- yet again -- another goal called off against an Eastern team like we've seen many times in the old WCHA men's hockey, new WCHA, and Big Ten. I was disgusted.

Today there's no dispute who the champion is. Minnesota opened a can of whoop-a**. Controversy gone.

Congrats to Boston for sweeping Montreal to get to the championship, a shocker. Boston played the championship series about even until the last game.

"Gopher alums Lauren Bench, Abigail Boreen, Taylor Heise, Amanda Leveille, Kelly Pannek, Lee Stecklein and Grace Zumwinkle were crowned as PWHL champions in the league's first season."

Leveille and Bench were reserve goaltenders and didn't play during the season. Boreen came in and out more than once as a player who wasn't drafted and has different collective bargaining contract terms, badically the next player in.

I will also add these names:

Assistant coaches Mira Jalosuo (penalty kill), Jake Bobrowski (assistant), and Brennan Poderzay (goaltenders) have ties to the Gophers. Jalosuo was a top defender in the world for Finland national team for many years and a defender for Minnesota Gophers. Jalosua probably was a significant reason for success this season, an underrated defense mind, and to me a rising star in the world of defense-minded coaching -- actually has already arrived at the top. I don't know much about Bobrowski except he was an assistant coach with the Gophers and I'm guessing runs important work during practices, especially forwards/centers. Poderzay is a goaltenders coach for Gophers men's hockey.

General Manager Natalie Darwitz was a hockey great as a forward/center for Team USA and Minnesota Gophers. She also was an assistant coach for the Gophers.

The first coach Charlie Burggraf was a former assistant coach for Minnesota Gophers. He had been retired from coaching awhile and looks to me, kind of, a bit like an honorary appointment or to bring an initial style before stepping aside, or at least that's what the final result looks like to me personally. Former NHL defenseman and Team USA coach Ken Klee then came in.

Sorry if I'm missing anyone.
