Week 2: Other Games Thread

Oklahoma St had the ball with 4 seconds left and it was 4th down. They do max protect and throw a bomb to run out clock, but fail to send a receiver down the field. So everyone thought the game was over. Refs decide to call intentional grounding, which gave the ball to CMU at the 50 with no time on clock. They throw a bomb to the 5, caught by CMU, lateral to another player and he runs it in for a TD.

Mike Peraria (ref guy on fox) just said the rule says no extension game on offensive penalties that have loss of down. So CMU gets a bit of a gift, but big mistake for OSU either way. And they can't stop a hail mary...

I thought that was NFL rule, not NCAA. I thought they do get an untimed down. I'm sure someone is looking for the rule right now.

Can we please, please get rid of the retired official stooge thing?

Pitt intercept in the end zone! Go pitt!

I told the wife "psu will go for it all here instead of a tying fg and have it intercepted." what a game!

He does read it right out of the rule book. It seems unlikely he'd accidentally have the pro rule book on a Saturday.

I love college football.

Would've liked to see a Penn State win; would make for a better atmosphere come October 1 @ PSU.

Oh well, fun game.

Central Michigan's win was its first against an AP-ranked team since 1991 (No. 18 Michigan State). The Chippewas had lost 13 consecutive games against ranked teams.

I would think the loss of down provision re: extensions applies to the offense, so they are not allowed to run another play. If there is a change of possession seems like the spirit of the rule would be to allow an extension so the defense can run a play.

That would actually make sense. The rule shouldn't help the team getting the penalty. I'm sure it will be discussed ad nauseam all week.

I bet 50% of refs would have never made the intentional grounding call though, as it was the last play of the game.

Illinois State not looking intimidated at Northwestern.

0-0 with 10 minutes left in the 1st half and the Redbirds are driving.

Why does this continue to happen? Should have been a punt return for a TD. Ended up being a touch back.

Extension of Periods
ARTICLE 3. a. A period shall be extended for an untimed down if one or
more of the following occurs during a down in which time expires (A.R.
3-2-3-I-VIII):
1. A penalty is accepted for a live-ball foul(s) (Exception: Rule
10-2-5-a). The period is not extended if the foul is by the team in
possession and the statement of the penalty includes loss of down
(A.R. 3-2-3-VIII).

The way I read the exception is that the game should have ended. Glad to not be a Cowboy's fan today.

Ohio St. struggling against Tulsa. 3-3 in the 2nd quarter. Alabama up 10-3 over Western Kentucky.

Tulsa got screwed by the replay officials... clearly made a first down called a first down, and the replay overturned it even though it clearly showed a first down. Ohio state wins like Hilary

I feel like we've seen something similar happen against OSU before.

I would still argue the spirit of that rule is to punish the offense, not the defense. It seems like it is one of those scenarios that maybe wasn't considered and there ought to be a specific example for going forward.

Mid-American Conference referee Tim O’Dey said Saturday that the Oklahoma State-Central Michigan game should not have been extended and that his officiating crew erred in giving Central Michigan an untimed down.

The Chippewas threw a Hail Mary touchdown pass on that final play and beat OSU 30-27.

O’Dey said he checked with Rogers Reddings and the game should end on an accepted live ball loss-of-down penalty with no time left.

Well, if that's the case the game should be awarded to OK State, or forfeited by CMU. I'll wait right here...

Obviously the refs should have known the rules but isn't that kinda a stupid rule? Essentially it allows a team like this to be able to commit a penalty to run out the clock.

at what point will the penn state fans turn on franklin? instate loss today.

Does OSU have a bunch of new starters on OL? Man they look bad up front. Tulsa is getting tons of push.

Illinois St about to go into half up 7-0 at Northwestern. Not good for the mildcats.

update: Illinois St sends shankapatamous out for PAT.

6-0 with 32 seconds left in first half.

OSU unable to put away an inferior P5 opponent. Urban Meyer is not D1 caliber.

I thought only the Gophers lost games like Ok State did today. Hope we've passed that kind of luck on to someone else for a while. So glad to be 2-0!!!!
