UPDATED 6/2: Joey King a Gopher, on full scholarship!

Still couldn't hit an open shot to save his life though.

People who are negative about Oto fail to realize that Tubby often played him out of position at SF. He is a PF, just like King is a PF. Playing SF was just setting him up to fail.

If you're catogorizing Joey King as a walkon, then I would think Kendal Shell has done more to earn the scholarship than King. If people think King is worthy of a fill ride, then give it to him for all three years. I would prefer those be the only respectable options.

All that matters is he's 1 inch taller than Oto, seems to shoot better in games, and doesn't look confused.

Haha. He's one inch taller or three inches shorter than Oto, no one seems to know. I think he would be an excellent, and I mean EXCELLENT, Division II player. Winona State is in need of a big man after losing 6-9 bruiser Clayton Vette, so I think this kid would fit in just about perfectly on a DII powerhouse. Soft rebounders with slow releases and moderate scoring ability in the MVC aren't exactly what Minnesota needs to turn things around. He could, however, be an absolute difference maker in Division II.

I was at those AV Eastview games as well and King was not alone. He also had the Oberfeld kid who is going to Bucknell and had a significant height advantage. .

Nope. Pretty sure AV had a big kid (6'-8") that went D1... blanking on the name, if i find it I'll update the post. But I was at the game and Tyus has had a handful of complementary players when Eastview beat their ass.

Don't get me wrong, King is not going to be a game changer, but he would be a much better option than Oto, it would be a mistake for the Gophers not to offer him a one year trail scolly at a position we are weak at.

Thomas Schalk? That was a couple years ago. Tyus was a freshman when he was a senior.

Joey is worthy. However, it may take some time to convince some of you.

Absolutely anybody can average 7 points a game coming off the bench, playing behind upperclassmen, as a freshman in the Missouri Valley Conference, for crying out loud. Anybody can put up 20 in a DI college game as a freshman. I mean he did only do it twice so it's kind of a fluke. All freshman 1st team...big deal it's MVC. They only had one team in the Final Four. You know what? Why stop at Winona? I think he'd excel even better at St Thomas. If you had just a bit of personal experience you'd have some idea how good somebody needs to be to average 7 points....sounds easy...it ain't...especially for a freshman and then one coming off the bench? He's not Larry Bird but he'd play and contribute at a position of need. The m.o. is he works hard. That's contagious. To be clear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOnRHAyXqYY

Joey was a good high school player. I admit I did not see a minute of him playing at Drake but it looks from the stat sheet like he contributed as a freshman - he did play well versus the better teams on the schedule. I am confident that coach Pitino will properly evaluate him and make the right decision on what is best for his style of play. I would love to see another Minnesota kid do well for our team but I would like the spot to be filled by a stronger rebounder. I believe we are in need of that role more than a 6-9 spot shooter. If we are going to run, we need to get the rock first.

First, Tommy Schaulk(sp) was already playing college ball at Bill and Mary in Virginia. Second, and I know that this is just tit for that but winning by 7 in both games where Eastview pulled away late is not "beating their asses". Hell Tyus had over 40 in both games, granted he had to carry them. They just did not have the height. I know the kid from Eastview that is going to Bucknell played pretty well in both games.

Yep, it is not about Tyus, King was not aginst at 6'-2" chump like the poster implies, Tom was a 6'-8" D1 caliper player that was a year older than him. AV had a lot of talent in those years despite Tyus being young.

Here are the Box Scores from King's Senior year against Apple Valley. Schalk was already at Bill and Mary.

Also, if you have seen Schalk play, he was extremely thin and had more of an outside game with absolutely Zero rotation on his shot. Anytime type of contact he would fold up.

Also, where did I say the word "chump"

Least surprising news ever:

I don't know anything about King, but I would not be surprised if Pitino convinces him to walk on. And by all accounts, that would be quite the coup for the Gophers.

The fact he is offering only a walk on spot for this year makes me think Pitino has a plan still for those last two scholarships. Otherwise, I'd imagine he'd at least offer a scholarship for this year with a "we'll see" for next year. Interesting. I know Buckles is out there, but maybe he still feels good about Black?

This crossed my mind as well. I've been saying for a while that I believe Buckles will be playing for us next year. No idea on the last scholarship though.

Agree with you completely on Buckles. No idea about that last scholarship though. Pitino must be feeling good about Black or is going to take Malik Smith.

Best walk on since Dave Winfield.

He would be very over qualified as a walk on. Big improvement over Halvorson (no offense). Just not sure that's an offer he will take as others have mentioned the financial situation. Could take a loan out for a year though and see if he can work his way to a scholarship next year.

The clamoring of some people on this board to give King a scholarship is alarming. It's like anytime a player is interested in coming here the forum community immediately falls in love and believes said player will be a good contributor no matter what. The Gophers shouldn't give him a scholarship simply because they need a tall player who can shoot some (34.7% from 3 isn't impressive). They're better off holding that scholarship for future seasons to get better players.

You don't succeed in the Big Ten if you recruit marginal Big Ten caliber players. We need a big body, but we need to give it to someone who is worth it. We do not need another scholarship wasted on a player to fill a hole who cannot actually play in the Big Ten like Oto, Mav, and Armelin. You actually cause a bigger problem for your team by recruiting marginal players because those players hurt you instead of help you on the court, and they have a scholarship that could go to someone better.

King can walk-on, but I will not be happy if they give him a scholarship.

I totally agree with you on this. Good points all around.

If he doesn't want to walk on, this could be another quality D1-caliber kid that falls into Mike Leaf's lap.

Dusty Rychart was a walk on and ended up being one of the best players on the team in the latter part of his Gopher career. Did he ever get a scholarship?

Apple Valley also had Schalk who averaged about 23 points a game and is playing at William and Mary or someplace like that. BTW, it's not like Fronk just started playing the last year....he has been their best shooter the past 3 years. Joey King would certainly be able to play for the Gophers next year if OO plays for them.

Jones has been the starting PG at Apple Valley since he was in 8th grade. There was only one season that he played against King in high school where he didn't have Schalk on his team. And for the guy who was saying Schalk would fold up, you don't know what you are talking about. Schalk was a pretty damn good high school basketball player for Minnesota.

King was a junior when Schalk a senior in one playoff game I was at.
