UPDATED (10/19) Amelia reports no jail time for Trevor; 2 more yrs probation

I think alcohol problems could account for most of Mbakwe's issues. I suspect he was probably under the influence when he found his various troubles. Too bad and I hope he gets it worked out. He should not have tried to come back this year. Not going to work.

@AmeliaRayno: In recess, judge needs to decide whether Mbakwe is not a danger, as his attorney is arguing. If not, could give the 4 yrs of probation.

@AmeliaRayno: If determines he is a danger, judge will not accept the 4 years of extra probation for Mbakwe. #Gophers

If that is the standard, his chances may be good. His actions since the Miami incident have been stupid more than violent. Whatever happens, Trevor has only himself to blame. The cloud over his head is of his own making. Many people have gone to bat for him and he keeps blowing those chances. Just a thought: Would the team be better off without him and the drama that circles him?

Multiple people drink due to depression too. The two are not always exclusive.

I think people see a guy like Trevor Mbakwe and think there is no way HE could ever be depressed. Not saying I have any reason to believe he is, but to dismiss it so easily is unfair to any individual who may make that claim. Basketball player or otherwise. Imagine if a "problem child" of your own came to you and finally said, dad I'm just really depressed. I've thought about suicide. I just don't know what to do you'd take it fairly seriously.

The basketball portion will play itself out, and Trevor may very well be using depression as an excuse, but I think it is unfair to call it such so quickly when his life and health may be in jeopardy.

This is unreal. Oh no, Dr. Don told you to stop posting! That's what Dr. Don does. Get over it. You can't possibly be that butthurt, can you?

And you do realize that you, in fact, have done nothing to require anyone to defend Tubby. You're puffing out your chest out like you've won an argument in which you've been, probably in most people's eyes, thoroughly beaten. DPo already called you out on your horses**t argument style. You can't make a point, then lean back and demand people prove you wrong. And that's what you've repeatedly done.

So I'll do the same to you. Prove to me that Blake was a shell of himself in his senior year (without mentioning Steve Alford, a comparison so off base that I'm amazed somebody even thought it up--I like Blake, but Steve Alford is 20 times the basketball player than Blake ever was or will be). Prove to me that Damian Johnson, Lawrence Westbrook, and Al Nolen didn't improve. Prove to me that Austin Hollins hasn't improved. Prove to me that Andre Ingram, Elliott Eliason, Andre Hollins, and Joe Coleman didn't improve over the course of last season. And do it without falling back on an unsupportable claim that any improvements are natural development and have nothing to do with Tubby.

You can't prove any of those things to me because the evidence isn't there. The stats prove that these players improved. If you're of the opinion that Tubby has nothing to do with these improvements, fine. But don't get all whiny when people disagree with that opinion.

First, I don't care if you and the GH Gestapo make judgments and claim victory. That in itself is moronic to think that there is some score going on in regard to posting opinions. Get over yourselves, you're not that important.

Second, I only have to ask you one question to prove my point.

Where are they now?

I've already pointed out that Blake was not used properly by Tubby. (Remember, my point is that Tubby is a really bad offensive coach.) Blake went out without any fanfare and with nothing to hang his hat on at the end of his senior season. In short, Tubby failed him.

Everyone of the kids you bring up want to play in the NBA. They think that Tubby will get them there. However, not one player under Tubby's tutelage has made the NBA as of yet from the University of Minnesota. I don't blame the players, I blame the coach.

And now, with the Mbakwe situation we see more upheaval under Smith's regime. The one thing that has been a constant since Tubby came here is drama. The second constant has been mediocrity in the conference. Smith will call out players and throw them under the bus as his excuse for mediocrity, but he never takes personal responsibility. Tubby has failed his recruits and has failed to make them significantly better basketball players. The last six years are my evidence.

I am amazed at the handful of people who miss the forest because of the trees. I mention the lack of improvement by the players to point out the mediocrity of the coach and you hone in on the players as though I'm attacking them. Focus. I'm telling you and the GH Gestapo that Tubby is a mediocre coach and has failed his players.

Now, defend Tubby.

The team has had this cloud over their head ever since he came here years ago.

We are told to believe that this will wrap up today. From there the team can decide what it wants to do.

If these alcohol abuse statements are true, I'm sure Tubby already knew about it.

Why? Civil agreements happen all of the time regardless of guilt / innocence claims. Kobe Bryant will still claim full innocence of rape and was never even found guilty, but I guarantee the female walked away with a nice sum of money.

Trevor is not Kobe Bryant. A multi-millionaire settling to make an inevitable civil suite go away is one thing. Someone who claims false identity and pled no contest to move on with life paying out a civil suit for an injury is another. It changes the narrative, IMO.

Either way, I too am just ready for this to be over. The sad thing is, if Trevor hadn't gotten his 6th year, we'd still probably feel pretty good about this season. Now it will be seen as a huge blow.

My stance on this has and always will be. Show me someone who will give us better recruits and more success.

Answer: No one. Tubby is the best the U will get and the U knows it.

Agreed.

I'd guess Tubby knows all of this and has actually been a great help for Trevor. You can debate his coaching and his style, but by all accounts, he is a first class human being and I have no doubt that he has been attempting to help Trevor and see him get better as much as he possibly can.

Many people get depressed when going through significant rehab, especially when their financial careers are hinging on the physical ability to compete. In July, Trevor may have really been questioning if he'd ever be able to play ball with his knee still not being 100%. Also, throw in his family background and the weight he may feel in trying to provide financial security to everyone and you've got a recipe for depression.

I won't defend his choices regarding alcohol consumption. That was a bad choice. He may pay a significant price for his poor choice. Hopefully, no matter the outcome of the judges decision, Trevor will receive help and encouragement to work through any depression he has.

Depression is a common theme in any athlete that experiences a severe injury. Except with Trevor, he had a lot more going on on top of it.

http://ukpmc.ac.uk/abstract/MED/2296211/reload=0;jsessionid=1m84JeyxSJ9IQvagJdBy.2

The most seriously injured group experienced significantly more tension, depression, and anger and less vigor than college norms, a mood disturbance that lasted 1 month. Emotional disturbance can occur after a sports-related injury, and its prompt recognition may facilitate the athlete's optimal rehabilitation and a safe return to participation in sports.

Throw in the fact that he had a legal case over his head for years, a child he was failing to support (in his mind at least I am sure), watching his team lose and blaming himself, trying to reconcile with an ex and getting arrested and more charges. Yeah, regardless of who's fault it all is, I'd guess there is a real chance he went through some depression and things just kept piling up as a result.

Well said. I posted something similar as well, but you beat me to it. Agree completely.

i guess trevor's baby mamma tweeted this << It's so horrible. Taking out loans for attorneys. 4 years of fighting the same case. To be a Black man in America... This is what you get. <<

Hearing is over. Amelia says he did not get jail time. Still waiting on her to say what he did get.

2 years probation and 20 hours of community service. Mbakwe got off easy.

Reading how GW is currently acting on twitter makes me think he really does deserve that ban. I do/did value his opinions on things and his knowledge of college basketball and the NCAA rule books, but at this point he is just becoming a bully. He isn't a reporter and he isn't a "blogger" he is just some guy who loves attention and will stick it to whoever he needs to in order to get it. His personal vendeta against Trevor and now his family is just plain disgusting.

And Mr. GW was polite enough to retweet it.

Answer: No one. Tubby is the best the U will get and the U knows it.

This is where we disagree. The U does not have to settle for mediocrity. Lesser programs than Minnesota have landed significantly better coaches that have built solid programs. I look forward to what Norwood Teague will do in regard to finding our next basketball coach. I'm confident that person will be a significant upgrade. Tubby won't get another contract extension again. Had the AD come earlier in the year, I question if Tubby would have been offered an extension this time.

At this point I'd just settle for Tubby getting an offensive guru as an assistant. His nepotism with his own son should be shed and a coach who can draw up plays that isolate the weaknesses of the opponent and isolate our strengths would be greatly appreciated. I'm very tired of watching 5 guys stand around until there is less than 5 seconds on the shot clock and then heave up a prayer as our main option on offense.

We can get someone better than Tubby. This is where we disagree.

Looks like he got off easy. What's the point of probation if you can violate it twice and there are no consequences?

If his knee is OK he will be beast this season for Big Ten teams to deal with, but it's embarrassing that he continues to get a scholarship and play basketball at a Big Ten institution.

Garbage!

Some additional tweets from Amelia:

"Mbakwe said he spoke with coach Tubby Smith this morning and that the coaches are supporting him. Said he wants to move on. #Gophers"

"Judge said there are positive strides that have been made already, referring to the AA classes & fact that Mbakwe has been meeting w/ psych"

"Mbakwe will continue to meet with the U-M sports psychologist. #Gophers"

Go Gophers!!

Good to hear. I hope Trevor gets the assistance he needs to deal with his depression. I also hope that Trevor gets people who can keep him accountable to making wise decisions. I want to hope the best for him.

Trevor now officially has millions of dollars and almost certain jail time riding on his ability to keep from screwing up for the next 24 months. If that can't motivate him to be a choir boy, nothing will.

Another classy tweet from our friend Pat:

@1500ESPN_Reusse: No jail time for Mbakwe. Now, all he has to worry about is depression & alcoholism that his attorney announced today.

If it's her that really tweeted that, does she really think that statement is going to help the public opinion (what's left of it) of her guy? Doesn't sound like the brightest lightbulb.

Baby Mamma I hate that phrase. As for her tweets I agree garbage. I suppose being black is why he failed a breathalizer.

How he still has a job I'll never understand ...
