Tyus will not come here says his dad.

I hope you're right, Howie...any recruiting class that would include Vaughn, Reid and possibly Cohen and Macura would really revitalize this program! Follow that up with Alex, Henry, Jarvis and Amir and now we're talking.
Any big time recruiting class Pitino has is going to include players from the Northeast imo. Until we start winning at a high level I think recruiting in state and in the Big Ten's general geography will be tough. With Coach Young's ties along with the rest of the staff the New York City area should be a hotbed for the Gophers to get players.

Meltdown about a player nobody thought was coming here? And from a poster who 'says' he talked to Tyus dad?

Sheeze.

I don't think he is a one and done. No point guard successfully went from high school to the NBA draft. It takes a lot of maturity to play the point in the NBA and he will need at least 2 years.

We'll ignore, for the sake of your argument, the number of guys that went directly from High School. Or Brandon Jennings who spent one year in Europe instead...

Amir is 2016 and not in the same class as Henry, Alex, and Jarvis. With all of the top guards/wings we've offered out east, I'd be surprised if MN landed more than 1 or 2 local kids (WI included).

Any "true" fan of the this state should be offended. It's fine...Duke, MSU, Kansas all obviously have better basketball programs than us...there's no denying that. But, if you had any real pride in the great state of Minnesota you'd stay home. Tyus obviously doesn't...whatever. I just won't give two *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#s about him, and get a certain satisfaction out of any particular failure he may incur. Don't get me wrong, I would never wish injury on any human but I hope he has a horrible time wherever he ends up. The state of MN is special, and if you can't see that...so long and enjoy "da south."

Tyus is gone. We know it. Cool for him. People I know that are semi-close to Vaughn (and even go to the U) say he isn't going to be a gopher. Who knows, maybe time will change things, but according to my knowledge if he chose a school today it wouldn't be Minnesota. Whitehead gives just as much love to the gophers as Vaughn does in the media.

Vaughn has given the Gophers and mainly Pitino and Young lots of love of late and in the press. Doesn't mean he is coming here but its not like he is dissing us. I think our chances are greater than you think. I'll also add that unless someone is his father or mother or best friend, they likely know nothing about where he will go.. just speculation like everyone else. Not sure semi-close is family, I would hope that is very close.

How many relatives and friends have you had to disown when they've moved out of state?

Why should I root for a kid that chose to go elsewhere? Whether he is from my state or not...if he chooses someplace other than MN, he will not get my support. Eff him...if he wanted me to be his fan he should have chosen my school. I root for the Hollins boys like they was from my high school because they chose the U.

Guys going to Duke or Kentucky or Kansas and then going on to the NBA don't help our cause at MN, not one bit. They help their school's cause. I offer my allegiance to those that offer it back and everyone else can suck stinky farts out of my buttox.

What does family have to do with Tyus choosing Duke? He aint my brother or cousin or nephew, he is just a kid that chose another school over my U. He didn't choose my school he isn't getting my fandom.

No one is asking you to be a fan of a player that leaves the state. I believe the point was a 17 year old kid that decides to play for Duke instead of Minnesota isn't a "follower", isn't "disloyal", doesn't automatically watch American Idol. He's a kid that made a decision on where he wanted to go to college....just like many of us have done when we were his age.

I really hope this isn't the prevailing attitude of fans if he (or others) decide to go elsewhere. Incredibly childish, selfish, and just pretty dumb... kids have every right to go anywhere they want for college, and not picking the home school doesn't mean he isn't proud of his state. I no longer reside in Minnesota, but I love the state and the U. Nobody is asking you to buy a jersey from the school he goes to but you could try to grow up a bit and stop rooting for 17 year old kids to fail (if they don't pick your school, that is).

What are u, like 11?

Certainly it is inconsistent to not give two *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#s about him and also hope he has a horrible time.

Kris Humphries stayed....was he a leader? Is he a legend?
Adam Boone left which made him a follower, he returned....leader? legend?
Rick Rickert...leader? legend?
Joel Przybilla...leader? legend?

Alan Anderson sure developed into a leader. Kammron Taylor sure developed into a leader. Jordan Taylor sure developed into a leader.

Not every kid wants to go to college minutes from home.

I wasn't going to comment further on this inane thread, but this post is hilarious.

Uh, yeah, I don't know about the labels but Rickert, Boone, Humphries and Przybilla all did very well at the U and continued making a name for themselves, helped the program and their home state. They'll be fondly, positively remembered here. 3 of the 4 played in the NBA and 2 were first round picks. Humphries and Pryzbilla have/had long NBA careers.

On the other hand, who the hell remembers Anderson, Taylor and Taylor? Nobody. Anderson and Kammron had nice roles on good college teams, but were nothing special, and while Jordan Taylor had a good career at Wiscy it didn't help him much. Besides, you can't fault Taylor for leaving bc he committed after Monson was fired and before Tubby was hired.

P.S. Unlike many (probably most) posters on here, I've actually been to Durham a number of times, and it's a sh*thole. Abandoned warehouses, ghettos, etc...basically a poster for the declining tobacco industry. Sure, if you never leave the Duke campus it's nice, but who's ever going to go to college and never leave the boundaries of campus?

Chapel Hill, on the other hand, is a pretty nice college town. Dukies hate UNC mostly out of jealousy.

I would bet the vast majority of people in Minnesota couldn't tell you who Boone and Rickert are and where they ended up. They are remembered by YOU because they played for the U, but far from legendary status if most people couldn't remember them or where they ended up. Humphries is remembered more in this state and nationally for being in the NBA and number one for whom he was married to, not because he played at the U. Had he played his college ball at Duke he would be no less famous here and likely more famous nationally.

For what its worth, my dad talked to Tyus's dad and his dad said that Minnesota is not in his final three. I know its hard to believe but take it how you want to I think Tyus should just cross us off the list at this point. If it helps my dad played for the Gophers in the 80s (Tim Hanson). He played amateur ball with and against Tyus's dad many times. That is how they know each other.

Did your dad ask about his academics? He needs to improve that if he wants to get into Duke. Rumor has it MSU is first then Duke.

Name five Duke point guards excluding Bobby Hurley. Kyrie Irving went there although I doubt anyone remembers. How about the world famous Will Avery? Players come and go and even Duke players for the most part aren't famous nationally. Duke players also haven't generally become the NBA stars say like Carolina has had. My predictions for the big three for what it's worth. Jones-Kentucky, Vaughn-Carolina, Travis- Minnesota.

Super. Irrelevant to what I was commenting on. All spurned better basketball programs to play at the U. None are legends. None were program changers. None are going to have their pictures in the rafters next to Mchale, Tucker, etc. They were all very good college basketball players.

See, I was commenting on what happens all the time on this board when an elite in state FB or BB prospect is making a decision:

- stay home
- change the program
- be a legend
- be worshipped
- be remembered forever
- get a statue in front of the arena
- you'll just be another player at (insert program)

I brought those three names up so I guess I remember them as does every Michigan State and Wisconsin fan. And since you characterized two of them as nice role players and the other having a good career, apparently you remember them as well. Never having talked to any of the three, I doubt they give a darn if Joe in Anoka or Sue in Brainerd knows who the heck they are.

Johnny Dawkins, Tommy Ammaker, Jason Williams, Nolan Smith, Chris Duhon is a decent start.

Currently 17 Duke players in the NBA. We have 3 and one of those is Royce White.

Look, if you are given a choice between playing for one of the top 5 programs of all time versus staying home and playing for minnesota, and you choose to accept the challenge and play for the best, you should be commended and appreciated that you reached that level. The kid dreamed it and worked it and should now grab it. Yea, it sucks that he won't be here but the flip side is he will rep MN well. Go get it young fella!

A lot more people nationally could name x number of Duke players than Minnesota players, sorry it is true. You yourself just named three, you could also add Wozo, Greg Paulus, and Jay Williams to the list. If Tyus goes on to have a successful career, regardless if he plays at Minnesota or not, the average Minnesotan will be more than happy to claim him as one of their own. Thank goodness Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, and Kevin McHale played for the gophers or else no one would talk about them in Minnesota. After all it is their gopher accomplishments that the sports world gives them credit for.

Crazy. I was about to post this same thing.

I was born and raised in Minneapolis, and am a diehard Gopher fan. If Duke, UNC, and Kentucky came calling for me to come to their school on a full ride scholarship, it would be very hard to turn down, or at least I would give them strong consideration, it would be asinine not to.

Not everyone gets the blessing to be talented enough to play with the best of the best. If coach K comes knocking on your front door to chit chat with you and your family, it has to be not only awesome, but also intimidating. The blue bloods do not offer bulks of scholarships, like a school such as Minnesota would. To be picked from the top players in the country to be able to attend a top flight program would be an honor.

Yeah Jones would be a big fish in a small pond here. But he will be a big fish in a big pond at Duke. He will be whatever team he chooses starting point guard from day 1. He will play with a plethora of McDonalds All Americans and get to play for a top flight coach with top flight facilities. He will play on ESPN often and will be under the spotlight. He will have a ton more pressure at Duke to succeed but for a competitive player like him, he probably would embrace the challenge.

Everyone who talks about how we would eventually make a statue or that he would be considered the greatest Gopher if Tyus were to play for us is crazy. Are those really your expectations? It would be great if he came here but in all honesty he would probably lead us to the tournament, maybe win a few games and then bolt for the NBA. If that happened, was all of the time recruiting him to come worth it? Maybe, even probably, but its not like this kid will be the savior of our state.

Yeah the home state is cool, but only 10 of the top 30 players in the 2013 class are staying in their home state school. I feel people on here over-emphasize how important staying home for school is for these kids. They have pride, a lot of pride. More pride for themselves than for their state. Going to a top program only enhances their ego and if they go to one they are automatically considered the cream of the crop.

Hopefully those odds for kids staying in state (1/3) prevail for us and we nab one of the three!

Well said.

Some of you people are pathetic. This is a Gopher fan board, not a support group for Minnesota teenage basketball players. Until you start demanding success, expecting the best to come, the U will never reach its potential in basketball to be and remain an elite basketball program. Get over your natural Minnesota mediocrity/modesty and start demanding more. Sure, if you know a kid personally then that's different, fine, go congratulate him on choosing a school other than the U. For Gopher "fans" who don't know these kids personally to applaud them on this board for going to other schools is asinine and makes Gopher fans look weak and stupid and accepting of mediocre status.

If a player chooses another school, then good for him/her, but there is no way I am going to root for him/her. Don't wish good or bad for that person. They aren't of interest to me.

I root for the U, support the U and went to the U. The U is my school. Anyone who chooses another is dead to me.

It isn't personal. The idea that we should wish them well and awe shucks, maybe next time is just not something I agree with. We celebrate the battles we win and ignore all others in recruiting as far as I am concerned.

It isn't juvenile it is called being a fan. I don't care about Packer players either.

I would be much more on board supporting Tyus if he just was honest with the fan base, and ruled us out. Go to Duke, no one is blaming you for doing that, but the nonsense of keeping the Gophers on his "list" is insulting to the fan base. Just be done with the charade

So by me demanding that Gopher athletics starts getting blue chip recruits it will somehow change the program? No. Fans show their support by buying tickets and showing up for games. There's really not much else to it. Minnesota is not an elite basketball program, sorry to break it to you. It is a tough sell to kids from anywhere to come to MN and play for a school that has won 1 NCAA tournament games in 15 some years. If Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn, and Reid Travis choose to go elsewhere, it will suck but it wont be the end of the world. It's tough to get a kid to commit to your school when the current coaching staff has less than a year to sway them. With how recruiting is nowadays the players weigh a lot on the coaches, then the school. I am excited as any to see what Pitino can do here with his style of play but without seeing a full season of how the team works, it is hard for players to envision themselves playing at a particular school.

There are other players who will want to be Gophers and who have pride in coming here and accepting a scholarship from Rich Pitino. I could not care less where the kids on our team are from, as long as they have passion and love for the U. Sure it would be cool to have home state kids on the roster, but clearly Pitino is trying to broaden the network and try to make Minnesota a desirable destination for recruits all over the country, and it is exciting.
