Tyus Jones to Duke.

Maybe I'm a Debbie Downer, but I just never thought we were at the top of his list from the outset. Really more paying the hometown team lip service than anything else.

However, I wish him the best. Duke, Michigan State, Ohio State and Arizona sound like they're not only getting Okafor, but Tyus as well. That would be quite the 1-2 punch for whomever lands the duo.

I know a couple of years ago, he mentioned he was always a huge Sparty fan. It seems he has never dug the Gophers for whatever reason.

It seems that once you've breathed...

the rarefied air of being a top 15 recruit their's nothing sexy about staying home in Minnesota. Point guard is the most important position on the team (every coach is smarter when they have a great point guard) and it will be very disappointing not to get a local kid and a great point guard interested. It's early and a lot can happen but I hate to see this kid seemingly not in the mix with the Gophs. Last season did not help Tubbys "brand" at all. Recruiting continues to be tougher than I expected with Smith at the helm and a "not interested" from Jones doesn't help. I need some good recruiting news. Anybody?

A lot can change, I'm not looking too much into it.

I can understand if he wants to leave MINN because we haven't been as successful as other schools. The one thing I really wouldn't like is if he went to a different B1G school like Michigan St. or Ohio St. If he's going to leave, leave for a school we wont play outside of tourney time or maybe non-conference. Hope he has a little home state pride not to beat us possibly twice a year (at least that's my take).

Future?:
Tubby step up recruiting with the $ MINN gives you + awesome new practice facility w/ Maturi gone = hype to get Tyus and friends (C'MON dreams)

You can't land every instate kid, but it would be really disappointing to lose out on Jones. Tubby really needs to get this program moving and I think a alot of us (myself included) greatly overrate the cache the Tubby Smith name currently holds. Tubby has not advanced past the second round of the NCAA's, or finished better than 4th in a conference, since 2004-2005. That's 6 full seasons, so a lot of the kids Tubby is recruiting now were in the 3rd or 4th grade the last time Tubby had a really successful season.

On the bright side, I do think it is better for Minnesota if Jones makes a decision rather quickly so that we don't get stuck holding a scholarship ala Cory Joseph.

If Tyus is as good as advertised, he might be a one and done anyway. I personally don't believe in recruiting one and done players no matter how good they are. Nevertheless, it is still disappointing to hear that the home state school is not even on his radar.

I don't think that is the case. He's young, a lot can change.

Those two may wind up going to school together, but there have been a number of kids who talk about being a 'package deal', but things don't turn out that way in the end. Too early to throw in the towel, but obviously there are a lot of programs stronger than the home town team that would love for Tyus to play for them.

What is your beef against (potential) one and dones? How can they even be identified (you never know who is a one and done)? There are so many transfers, injuries, etc. that go on with college kids, as long as the institution is running things by the book I've got no problem with taking in exceptional talent.

Tubby might want to offer his 6'10'' center friend from Chicago a scholarship post haste.

It is not smart for any sophomore to be narrowing a list down to four schools at this time. So many things can change including coaching changes, success or failure on the court, probation possibilities, other players signing at their same position. The only real surprise to me is the timing of this news.

Who knows if Tyus will stay home, but if the Gophers have a good year, finish strong, and win a couple games in the tournament his view of the program could change pretty quickly. Big season coming up.

I don't really consider this real news. He didn't actually trim his list and set it in stone. It's merely his current thoughts on schools, which can and likely will change quite a bit before he is a senior.

This is no surprise

Two weeks ago, I was informed by a freind of the family that Tyus has no interest in Minnesota. This is no secret, down in the Apple Valley area so I'm surprised it has taken this long to surface on Gopher Hole. Hopefully Tubby is not giving up as alot can change. Tubby needs to ask Tyus what needs to change for the U of Minnesota to be considered, and do everything in his power to get it done. Even if Tyus doesn't change his mind, hopefully Tubby can leverage this news to get a new practice facility now!!

If the Gophers can hire his mother as the AD, her boyfriend and brothers as assistant coaches the Gophers have a shot.

According to johhnygopher tubby loves the kid. I think he will give 110% to make him a gopher, which is all we can ask I suppose.

Confused as to why you don't believe in recruiting one and done players no matter how good they are. Carmelo Anthony brought Syracuse a title as a one and done player, John Wall, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose are three other examples of one and done kids who had huge impacts on programs. It also helps any program to be known as a school that puts kids in to the league which will attract more talented kids to a particular school.

The kid is a Soph. in HS which means he's 3 years from setting foot on a college court. If he were to play 4 years of college ball, the start of his Sr. season is 6 years away. Who knows if Tubby will even be around in 3-6 years? He's been sitting on an unsigned contract for who knows how long now and after Mbakwe graduates, he's likely in a for a long run of NIT appearances at best.

how many times do you see kids talk about package deals and how often do they ever follow through. Minnesota is still very much in the mix for Tyus with duke and Michigan State the top competition. get used to national media ignoring MN when talking about him. if he decided to follow through with the okafor thing, then we have no shot, but you'd' be suprised how confident some around MN are that in the end he will stay home, are they delusional, time will tell.

He's a sophomore in high school! I played with guys in high school that were good as freshman/sophomores and average by the time they were seniors. I'm not saying he won't be good, but so much can change, both from a talent perspective and where he wants to go. Let's check back in 18 months after his junior year, I'm more concerned now with what big guy we can land for the class of 2012.

I don't actually think the two of them will end up going to the same school, but I don't see why we don't recruit both anyway. If anything, we're at least communicating how big of a priority Tyus is for us. Make the kid happy. In all seriousness, it's ridiculously early so I'd try to not pay too much attention to his "favorites" for quite a while.

I assume your friends were never rated as top 10 players in the nation

Not surprised at all, but still makes me want to cry.:(

Although, I'm not going to worry about his for another couple of years. It may sound crazy but I wouldn't be surprised if Andre Hollins is ultimately a better college guard than Tyus. I have high hopes for Andre (obviously) and I think he is really going to impress at Minnesota. He has all of the physical tools, good basketball smarts, and a solid head on his shoulders, the sky is the limit for him.

A better way to say it is at Duke, MSU, and UNC he would be one of many legends. At the U, he would be THE legend. (I'm not sure if a guy like Mchale would be considered in the same league if Jones leads us to several Final Fours)

All McHale was...was a top 3 pick in the 1st round of the NBA draft in 1980...and then was considered one of the Top 50 players to ever play the game. He is an NBA Hall of Famer.

I agree with you...I'm not sure McHale is "considered in the same league" as a friggin 10 grader....:eek::eek:

Let's try to get real...for just a moment or two...

Did you read what I wrote? I said I'm not sure McHale would be considered in the same league as Tyus if Tyus were to lead the Gophers to several Final Fours. I understand McHale was a great player, but I'm not sure of what his success led to for the Gophers. Great NBA legend =/= great Gopher legend in my mind.

tyus jones most likely another sell out

hope tyus does the same thing as the the skunk recruit below

"its hard to turn down ur dream school but im doing the right thing"
bronson koenig after he turned down north carolina to commit to wisconsin

Winning cures a lot of ills. We need to start doing more of it, and on a consistent basis.

I don't see that quote as Tyus saying that's his top group at all. To me he was just listing schools that he and his friend have in common and like. Those schools are by no means his set top list, he's young and has a ways to go with this. Look at what JG said again, it makes much more sense than what the Trib lady put down as I doubt she understands recruiting much at all at this point.

"we haven't even thought about narrowing down the list" - this is the quote people are completing looking past.

It would be very hard to turn down a chance to play for Tom Izzo. Heck, I'm a huge Gopher fan, but if I had Jones's talent and could go play for Izzo or stay home it would be a tough choice.

Tom Izzo is a great coach, you are right. But he does have pretty much the same accomplishments and track record as Minnesota's Tubby Smith. They are both phenominal coaches.
