Twins/Vikings/Wild/Wolves Championship appearance drought tracker

There are 3 times in my sports fandom where I have thought "ok this is finally going to happen" and had it fly back in my face.

The first is after game 1 in 2002 against the Angels
The second is Tanner Morgan and Rashod Bateman hitting that 50 yard TD early against Wisconsin.
And the third is 2023 going up 2-0 against Quinnipiac.
That loss to Quinnipiac wrecked a lot of people. Bonin has been posting from an isolation room in Bellevue ever since.

Twins aren't even going to make it to the weekend, much less through September.

Put a fork in 'em. They're done.

The streak is resting a little easier late in the 3rd quarter of this game.

Loserville USA living up to the title in the regular season to save a little stress come playoff time

The only chance this streak will ever end is if the Wild get a hot goalie sometime. Hockey is random enough to win without being the best team.

I think we need root for a stretch of good health for the Wild.

And hot goaltending.

You better pray it happens before Kirill inevitably bounces
C'mon work with me, the audience has its dawber down given tonight's events. Throw me a friggin' bone here.

Maybe KK will want to stay having hung through the salary cap hell?!?

Some poor guy made a long analytical YouTube video about the Twins 18 game playoff losing streak and the phenomenal odds against it. About a month later they won a play-off game. We need him to make a video about this streak overall.

I wonder what the odds are a team loses only 4 games all season against just 2 different teams while not winning their division and not making it out of wild card weekend.

Probably about the same as the Packers going 10-0 against every non-NFC North Team besides the Eagles and then drawing Philly again in the 1st round, only to lose yet a 2nd time.

In 2 different hemispheres no less to Open & End their Season.

As tough as the NFC North has been all year, 0-2 in the Playoffs with decisive losses.

This streak only seems to be getting stronger as it goes. There were a couple really close calls with the Vikings in 1998 and 2009, but it hasn't seriously been threatened in over 15 years. The Wolves never got within one game of advancing to the finals in either 2004 or last year, and they seem to have backslid down the mountain now. This thing feels safe for a while.

One of these days I'm going to precisely compute it, but the randomized odds of this occurring are now approaching 3,000 to 1.

It's all relative, but upon inspection getting to within 1 Playoff Series (as the Wolves did this past spring) feels like it was "pretty close."

Maybe not in terms of drama (since it was done in 5) but it does require advancing at least 2 Playoff Rounds. To me it should be treated the same as getting to the NFC Championship game.

Advancing through 2 Playoff Rounds has been rarely accomplished with these sports teams, just 3 times this Century. Crazy that it was the Wolves to do it twice ('04 & '24), which are the only 4 Playoff Series wins for them EVER.

Wild also did it in 2003.

Vikings have not done it since 1987.
Twins have not done it since 1991.
North Stars also accomplished it in 1991.

That's wild that the Vikings have not won 2 playoff games in the same year since 1987. They're 9-19 in the playoffs since then.

Doesn't help that Denny Green lost his first four before lucking into a W in 1997. O'Connell is now following Green's career path for playoff performance, including bringing knives to gunfights, looking completely unprepared for the level of intensity of big games.

They made an entire series on the Vikings. It's incredible. Hasn't worked.

This is an incredibly well-done mind-blowing series. Anyone who thinks we aren't the most tortured franchise need only watch it and learn. Seven epsiodes.

Life is often an exercise in overcoming disappointment, forcing oneself to get out of bed every morning despite the Sisyphusean experience we may endure in our personal, work, or social lives.

I for one appreciate the Minnesota sports teams preparing me for life as an adult (I was a sophomore in college when the Twins won the '91 WS) and building the will to advance through life's most trying and turbulent times.

You know what; I've thought the same thing. The trick is to have it teach you resilience and perspective rather than make you a bitter victim.
