Tubby is out...who will be the next coach?

I guess Nadine's source was wrong...no announcement on the new coach sounds imminent.

Can’t announce the new guy right now or it would be obvious that the discussions about the job took place while Tubby and his replacement were still coaching games. Regardless of the reality, for public consumption the sequencing is to terminate Tubby, conduct a search, identify a replacement, find out if the replacement will accept the job on the terms to be offered, offer the job, let replacement resign his current position and then announce the hire. Harder and harder to do with the internet, twitter, cell phone cameras, etc., but they will likely try to follow that sequence.

Does the U have a formal wait period? You know how some schools have to officialy list a position and then have it listed for 14-30 days before they can make a hire?!?!

A friend of a friend (who works at the airport) is claiming he saw Shaka today. I have no clue as to the credibility of this claim.

I also have it from another source (who I do consider very reliable) that Teague told him 2 months ago that he has been courting Shaka.

We need to query Son of Moonlight who the new coach will be.

He made the correct prediction the last time and was roundly disparaged up to the leaked announcement it was Tubby.

By the way, is there a Friend of Shaka or Friend of Whoever in the wings. I'm surprised FoT has not returned to chide Teague as yet.

Jesus, Sid sounds absolutely ridiculous in the press conference.

Last night Sid said he was more involved in behind the scenes at the U than Reusse or Max and he knows they will NOT fire Tubby. He is no longer Scoop Hartman.

Usually its just an HR issue. Lots of rules in higher Ed.

You know you're toast when Sid proclaims you safe.

The only scoop Sid has had in the past several years has been a Mint Chocolate Chip scoop at Selma's in Afton.

Wiki on Shaka.

Smart's teams play an upbeat style of basketball known as "havoc." Smart described his "havoc" defensive philosophy during his introductory press conference as, "We are going to wreak havoc on our opponent's psyche and their plan of attack." On the court, the "havoc" defensive mindset is visible through the heavy use of the full court press and pressing after made baskets to disrupt opponents' timing of offensive sets. In each of Smart's three seasons, the Rams have consistently maintained one of the most efficient and disruptive defenses in the nation, ranking 31st in Steals Per Game and 17th in Turnover Margin his first season and 1st nationally in both categories his second and third seasons as head coach. Offensively, Smart-coached teams play uptempo and push the ball after misses and makes with what Smart describes as "The freedom to make plays in the open court."[

This paragraph screams Tyus and Rashad to me.

Has anyone discussed yet how we plan to replace the Scheduling Genius, Coach Esposito?

Somebody explain to me why Flip would be a bad hire? I would think a guy with an NBA background who is a Minnesota alum who really wants the job would be a good hire. It's much harder to win in the NBA than in college. Not sure what style of play he would run, but I would prefer Flip compared to an Anthony Grant who hasn't really achieved anything at Alabama and plays a very slow tempo.

I think there are a lot of Flip supporters on this board. I am pretty neutral on him and see him as kind of boom or bust. As for possible reasons why he would be a bad hire?

1. Age- I think people are wary of hiring another older coach whose best work might be behind him
2. Recruiting- Hasn't been involved in recruiting since cellphones were invented, much less the internet
3. Playbook- Flip had a lot of plays as an NBA coach, could he adapt his style to what a college player is able to execute?
4. Ryan Saunders- It might just be me, but I don't think another coaches son getting a spot on the bench will go over well

Now there are a lot of reason why Flip would work too. He was one of the first coaches to take advantage of the zone defense rules in the NBA, he's been a presences in 3 solid to great markets for talent: Minneapolis, Detroit, and DC, and I really believe he could sell kids on the fact that he could get them to the NBA. A final positive for Flip is that his offense was considered guard friendly by most and guard play usually wins big games.

Flip Positives:

* I have no doubt that Flip would give us a much better in-game coach.
* His ability to react to mysterious wrinkles our opponents can throw at us... like a zone defense for example...cuz we all know how tricky those pesky zone defenses can be.
* I'm sure he would also be more competent at drawing up plays inside the last minute that don't result on Turnovers.
* I think he would install a more modern offense with better results.
* I imagine he can break down video and show players how to not repeat the same mistakes. The NBA is kinda big on video.
* He might even teach our players about the 2 for 1 strategy, something Tubby's teams never attempted using in 6 season encompassing over 180 games.
*Enthusiasm for the program is legit and he might be willing to work on the cheap, considering how much he made in the NBA. Hopefully he tucked some away.

Unknowns:
- Can he relate to modern day players?
- What's his eye for talent and intangibles?
- Can he recruit?

Possible drawbacks:
- Age - over 50 is, like ancient for teenagers.
- Perception that he lost something after getting fired quickly in Washington.
- Doesn't have the same national buzz that Shaka would bring and that could hinder his ability to recruit the big 3 or other big names.

I think there's a lot more positives than possible negatives which may not be a problem at all. Shaka is still the first choice because that buzz a new hire can generate can lead to a recruiting bonanza if parlayed correctly. Flip may be a better x's and o's coach but I'm guessing Shaka is a better recruiter.

Would Flip's love for the Gophers allow him to swallow his pride and take an assistant role with Shaka? That would be my dream scenario...The buzz of Shaka and the x's and o's from Flip...

Local media knows nothing.. as we discovered when a Gopher Hole poster broke the story, not media. I think its Flip or Shaka and that a deal is done. Whether its one of those guys or someone else, even if the deal is done, you cannot announce it today. Tubby deserves at least that much... The "search is ongoing" line is standard stuff. I think a deal is done.. we will see.

I agree 100%.

I think we hear something soon. Teague would not have pulled the trigger without having his guy locked. Just my opinion.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes to a name school, gets a bump in energy from the change of scenery like he did here, elevates the team he inherits like he did here and eventually sags in energy and performance like he did here.

Maybe Grant would bring that Shannon Hale kid with him, we could use a four star recruit at PF next year

The only reason people have a hard on for Flip is because he's from here and played on arguably the greatest gopher team of all time.

There's always the "one of us" thing, but this isn't a Marc Trestman kind of deal either. Flip has a pretty decent resume as a coach. The recruiting is the biggest thing, but a lot of that is done by assistants, and it's not tough to say "well, I coached a team to the NBA finals" as a pretty good recruiting tool.

Yeah, he got canned in Washington, but realistically, nobody was going to help that train wreck of a team.

It's a weird dynamic. If he wasn't a former Gopher, his name wouldn't even be mentioned. But since he went to the U, does he have more passion for the job? Does he work harder here than someone who has no ties? Every coach wants to win, does it affect results if you put more into it?

Yeah, it's not like Izzo is 58 or anything.

At least Flip's team was at its best when all of these kids were 8-9 so they probably have fond memories of him. That's the age group that most guys fall in love with basketball.

I'm not saying I necessarily want Flip, but the recruiting concerns may not be an issue. All you have to do is figure out if Flip would get the Big 3 here or not. After that, our success would recruit itself. I'm not saying you put the entire decision on three 17 year olds, but I'm sure this wouldn't be the first scenario where potential recruits are asked about potential new hires.

I might be the only one worried and not excited. I have no faith to this point in Minnesota administration to make a good decision. I have no reason to believe Shaka would take this job, Illinois offered him and Shaka said no. The Illinois job is a much better gig than Minnesota. I don't think Teague makes Shaka come, if he does I will welcome him with open arms. Marquette is a much better job than Minnesota so buzz would be a fool to leave for Minny. Flip IMO is the only viable name that would make sense. I would be extremely nervous for an up and comer to take this job, any success will take that guy away.

We aren't North Carolina or Kansas, we don't get the pick of the litter, time will tell but as a Minnesota sports fan I'm insanely nervous that we screw this up.

It's much harder to win in the NBA than in college.

I disagree with this statement - at least when you're talking about coaching at a non-elite school. In the professional leagues (excepting MLB), the playing field is theoretically level. You have access to the same resources as the next guy, so the difference between winning and losing is how good you are at securing the appropriate talent and maximizing said talent. In college, the playing field is inherently unbalanced, and it takes a few lucky breaks to be in position to contend or even to win. Teams jump up and down from top to bottom all the time in the pro leagues (even in MLB), but the same 15-20 teams (or sometimes less) are almost always in contention in both college football and basketball because the inherent advantages in resources, recruiting cachet, history, location, etc. are pretty difficult to overcome.

I don't know why everyone hates Marc Trestman...he was good enough to get hired by an NFL team as a HC, he's surely good enough for our bottom feeder of a football program.

I might be the only one worried and not excited.

No, you aren't. There is far more potential for a colossal blunder than there is for a home run. This is Minnesota we're talking about. If Shaka actually comes and lives up to his potential, I give Teague all the credit in the world for having balls of steel. If it ends up being Flip, you're trading an old guy with a national title for an old guy who hasn't coached in college since the Reagan administration.
