Trill Carter in the portal

The Transfer Portal is putting another layer of competition. It seems like each year every player on the team is competing for their spots.

It can work both ways for the Gophers. IMHO, so far, they have done well enough.

No, no, no, no. I really don't know why you made this up. This is nothing of the sort of what I was talking about.

I'm talking about: to have a guy who busted his ass for your football program, contributed heavily on the field of play, a decision is made one way or another for whatever reasons, fine, but what is done is done, and the response is "I don't talk about people who leave"???

Here's all you need to say:

"Michael Dixon was an important part of our team. He played is butt off for us, he will be missed for sure. We will continue to help him figure out what is best for him, but at this time there is mutual agreement that isn't at the University of Minnesota. We wish him the best. And at the same time, we are very excited about the opportunity this gives guys like _________ and __________ to step up and fill that role next season."

Copy and paste:

Really not that hard. Hell of a lot better than sore loser "I don't talk about people who leave".
It’s not that big of a deal. Obviously rubs you wrong, but most people don’t seem to care, it doesn’t hurt anything.

And then you leave open the media to ask 20 follow up questions…..

By taking the stance you don’t talk about guys who are gone, the topic is closed.

well, that makes 9 defensive players who have left or will be leaving by transfer.

granted, each person certainly has their own individual reasons for leaving. but when a majority of the transfers are on one side of the line, it's at least worth mentioning.

And you certainly are doing that...every time.

At the small price of treating the guy who busted his ass for us and contributed on the field, like a sack of trash to be brought out to the curb and discarded. :(

Yes, it rubs me the wrong way.

Also yes, it seems most here don't share that sentiment. :( OK Fine

Does anyone else think that is how it sounds besides you? For example...does Trill?

The fact that you post this stuff while simultaneously accusing others of "making things up" is delicious irony :)

When you watch Gopher football in the fall, ask yourself while watching the D-line and I bet you never once say to yourself....oh, Trill would have made that play. He is gone, not going to miss him for one second.

On the other hand there are probably kids that were kicked off the team that Fleck hasn’t commented on, one of which could be Trill for all we know. Fleck just leaves it at they’ve entered the portal. Obviously it doesn’t make sense to thank and praise the kids in these situations so just keep it simple when dealing with the media.

How is not discussing guys that decided to leave treating them like garbage? They aren't part of the team anymore, therefore Fleck has no reason to talk about them. He isn't insulting them or dragging their name through the mud....he just isn't discussing guys that are no longer on the team.

Strikes me as a good policy.

He was a space-eating DT for one of the best defenses in all of college football. IMO, he will be missed.

There is no way to sugar coat it- these loses are adding up. It is hard to see with such a difficult schedule this year. The team is going to need depth at every position. Each loss eats at the depth chart.

It looks like NDSU, which appears isolated and successful, has also seen a large number of starters jump into the portal. The new norm.

So of the guys we have lost on D there were only 4 that were truly known commodities that could be considered a loss for the 2023 season (not speculating on the ability of guys who didn't play).

Carter, Bishop, Dixon and Oliver....the rest were depth guys who hadn't seen a ton of playing time.

We brought in - Selig, Henderson, and Collins all who got high transfer ratings and presumably can play right away.

Given where we are at scholarship wise it will not be surprising to see at least one more transfer come on board, most likely on the defensive side of the ball.

So yes, a lot of guys have transferred out.....look around college football, this is happening everywhere. But it isn't time to hit the panic button and you have to factor the guys coming in into the equation when talking about the guys going out.

With the explosion of the portal the reality for most teams is that your depth is going to be very inexperienced. Just the way it is.

After spring ball another round of transfers will hit the portal. Fleck seems to always be on top of the roster and what is needed.

Yep....have had some tough losses to the portal (every team has) but overall I still feel like we have come out ahead in terms of the players we have brought in vs. the players we have lost.

It means the young guys who haven't played yet are really pushing hard. Nobody knows more about everyone else's ability than teammates.

I would add Willis to your list, especially after Oliver left. I’m really only concerned about linebacker at this point. But I do agree there’s no need to hit the panic button, I think this staff is smart enough to identify areas of need and address them with portal adds. They’ve really been good at roster management.

From my perches in HBS and watching the road games on TV, Dixon looked like a heavy hitting NFL type DB with above average coverage skills. The big loss was here. My assumption is he is getting paid just like our RB that went to Oregon. This one sucks balls. Losing Bucky sucked too. That guy had it.

Every time I surveyed the field and saw #11 I felt better about the upcoming play. Oliver had some sign of being a difference maker and that never really came back after the injury.

I'll keep saying it, because it is correct:

the Big Ten must institute a mandatory one-year sit out for all athletes, graduates or not, all sports, regardless of anything else, if you transfer within the conference.

Transferring within the conference is dogs__t.

I agree with your sentiment about transferring in conference but there is no way the Big Ten would institute something like that on their own.

Why? Gophs could clearly be on the benefit side.
