Transfer Portal 2025

1300 is mind boggling. Then there are probably some D-2 or JUCO players that deserve to move up.
We only have room for a few. Indiana and others have room for several. If a large number of the 1300 are like Johnson with few bench minutes, it must be tough to project how that player might fit on a team. Easy to figure out the high profile ones, but they are demanding the high pay.

Yarden Garzon to Maryland. One thing about Brenda she will always reload with talent to keep her team towards the top.

Interesting portal pickups for Maryland from a pace-of-play perspective. Garzon is slow in transition (seems to run flat-footed) and Merkle is slower.

Freshman Avery Howell is leaving Southern California and entering the transfer portal, along with two other Trojans guards.

Howell announced her decision on her Instagram account.

The 6-foot guard from Boise, Idaho, averaged 7.5 points and shot 43% from the field, including a team-high 40% from 3-point range, and 83% from the free-throw line.

The transfer portal has become free agency. Coaches used to recruit players by showing them how the university (getting a degree) and athletics would be a good fit for them. Now coaches with the most money just buy the players. I'm not sure if anyone cares about the academics. Where are all these athletes going to be 10 years from now?

totally agree. Hopefully Coach P can sell the portal recruits that the pieces are there to compete this year. No reason why she shouldn't be able to land some impactful players. (Besides Money)

Players are still going to often go to places where they know someone from past recruiting.

This is where the business community is so important in recruiting during NIL. Companies should be interested in college athletes, especially on the women's side, to pitch their companies or provide future job opportunities.

Where will they be 10 years from now? Probably pretty well off. Free education, making $$ during their careers, and some having master's degrees.

I agree that companies should be interested/invested in NIL and the future opportunities for players.

How should we as individuals promote the Program? Buy season tickets? Introduce friends to the game? Donating to the Gopher Fund? Or perhaps becoming a member at DTA? Or does the responsibility lie entirely with the business community and contributions from large donors?

I believe it is a continuous feedback loop...
attracting better players result in more wins, more wins better attendance, better attendance means more noise and more $$$,
players love the crowds and noisy fans, hence attracting better players. Fan support is an important part of the attraction.
Consistently being in the upper third of Big Ten will result in more NCAA appearances and games against quality opponents in the non-conference... drawing larger crowds.

I scrolled through Raoul's WBB blog on transfers. The table I built is based on website as of 4/9. I am not sure of what criteria used to populate the data. For example, I thought that I read here that Maryland already had 2 transfer in, the site only shows 1. But worth updating in a week or so.

Based on the out/in transfer portal chart it's looking like Penn State's Kieger is really on the hot seat. 9 players in the portal with a returning coach?

Do we have any inside info on who the gophs are going after? All the tweets I see from the people who seem to follow the portal world I don't ever see visits taking place with MN.

If she wasn’t going to come home I’d prefer her out of the BIG.
Just sucks we can’t land top transfers, but when you don’t make the tournament I can see why there’s hesitation.

Agree.. Yeah it’s tough to compete against those teams… she is looking to get to the Final 4…

OXFORD — Ole Miss women's basketball has added its best player in a strong transfer portal class.

Ohio State forward Cotie McMahon is transferring to Ole Miss, according to On 3.

McMahon, a 6-foot forward, will be a senior for the Rebels. She was the second-leading scorer for the Buckeyes at 14.4 points per game. She also averaged a team-high 6.3 rebounds and started all 32 games.

McMahon was named to the All-Big Ten First Team in 2024 and 2025. She was the No. 23 player in the 2022 high school rooting class. McMahon is from Dayton, Ohio.

Because Ole Miss is graduating its top three scorers in Madison Scott, Kennedy Todd-Williams and Starr Jacobs, McMahon is an excellent addition for coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin as she hunts for veteran players. Seven players have transferred out of Ole Miss, but none were major factors last season.

Michigan picks up transfers from UCLA and Bucknell. They will be better than they were this year. Hope Coach P is doing work or we may end up where we left off.

That's under the assumption that our young players don't improve and Braun doesn't make a difference. Even standing pat this team should be better next year, obviously would like them to add someone but this is a good team as it stands.

Yes getting Braun and Woodson back will help; but, not sure how much it will move the needle.

UCLA standouts Janiah Barker and Londynn Jones will enter the transfer portal, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Barker, the No. 3-ranked prospect from the class of 2022, spent one season with the Bruins, who last week appeared in their first NCAA Final Four in program history.

Jones, the No. 22 prospect of the same class, played for UCLA for three seasons, emerging as a starter the past two.

The Gophers without Braun and Woodson were able to give Maryland, Ohio State, and USC all a run for their money in the final quarters of each game. But they just weren't able to finish the job in any of them. With Braun and Woodson back, I'm optimistic they will get some victories over top teams next year.

No worries here. There's a reason everyone is sticking together and the coaches don't seem to be targeting high profile transfers. They all think the pieces are there to succeed next year and I'd have to agree. The future is bright.

Okay, a couple of updates on the portal. First, we are returning 10. we don't have many needs and certainly don't have a massive amount of playing time to be promising to people. They are being selective with who they are going after and they have to be a fit with the current roster. Also to the people saying "Will Mara be a needle mover?" ... Well the year before they beat Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska who were all tournament teams with her. Also, look back at the Drake game from that year and get back to me if she can be a game-changer.

Updates.

-They reached out to Laci Steele. Opening demand was a starting spot. Hense why she ended up at Wisconsin.

-Reached out to Kneepkens. She just doesn't view us as the same level of the teams she is looking at. Im more petty than the coaches and would of reminded her we were able to beat Indiana and Northwestern even without Mara and Woodson and her Utah team couldn't....but I digress.

-A name to keep an eye on is the 6'3 post Jordana Reisma. She played basketball in Wisconsin and is leaving Cleveland State after three seasons. Coach Dawn is HIGH on her and going after strong. Reisma is on a visit to Missouri this weekend and unsure if Gophers will get her but Dawn is gonna pull out all the stops to try to secure her. It is said her skillset could have her starting over Hart as the Center.

It must be a sticky situation to recruit in the portal. If a player is demanding a starting position and a team says okay that might disrupt a team. If that results in a current starter being displaced and the portal is still open, then the "offended" starter hits the portal. And perhaps, teammates displeased with the decision could also hit the portal. Rebuilding through the portal might be "easier" than adding (and improving)?
