STrib Letter to Editor: Coach Kill we feel for you, but watch your language

Damn, just when I thought things couldn't get any sillier around here than the Iowa jacket debate, we now have a thread where wren is giving advice to Jerry Kill on how to act and speak.

He's not a big cusser, but "damn" and "hell" certainly are part of the way he speaks.

He also said sh*t about 10-12 times, including "five-star bullsh*t". Tuning into It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia apparently shi* aint a big deal on TV anymore.

"If we learn not to take any damn plays off, then we wouldn't have lost to New Mexico State. So it's a deal of getting the mentality built into a group of young people that, hey, you are not super human, forget the five-star bullsh*t."

Do we have a game tomorrow? I thought these stupid threads were for the off season.

I can see where Carol is coming from, i've been offended by the language of a MN athlete before. When Joe Mauer was in the homerun derby (rim shot), and he was sending flyballs to the warning of the warning track and kept yelling "Golly!" and "Shucks" (literally), I was a little offended...

Sorry, Mrs. Moen. Tony Dungy is not our football coach.

You need to get over it, learn some perspective, get on your knees, and thank God and Baby Jesus that we didn't end up with Mike Leach. Otherwise, your self-righteous buns would have had a stroke by now.

For her own sake please do not show her this:

"JERRY KILL
We feel for you, but watch your language

When I first heard about Gophers football coach Jerry Kill's seizure, I empathized with him, because my son also experiences seizures. However, after hearing Kill's interview on TV, I was less than supportive.

His language during the interview was upsetting. An article came out in the paper called him "feisty," but I would call him "crude." At least the paper cleaned up his language a bit.

This thought came to me: If he talks like that during a live interview, I can only imagine the language he probably uses in his position of coach.

I do wish him well in getting the seizures under control. Now I wish he would get his tongue under control.

CAROL MOEN, NEW BRIGHTON"

Go Gophers!!

Sometimes the wrong people have the seizures...

finest moment. To hard-core football fans...no big deal. To Mom's who have young sons who share a seizure disorder and look up to Coach Kill as an adult who is "somebody just like that kid...", it may have been a bit less than adequate communiations style of a youngster and his mom.

I think I can see both sides of the issue, but, for the head Coach of the Gophers who has been reaching out to the state of Minnesota, and has even had a 10 y.o. girl suffering from cancer lead the team out onto the field for the first home game, it may not have been the best time to "tell it like he felt it..." There is good old fashioned country charm and then there is good old fashioned country cussing.

Basically, the mom's don't like to have their young kids hear the good old fashioned country cussing. That's a mom for you...it seems.

You guys and gals can't be hard on a mom for just being a mom with a young impressionable and possibly vulnerable kid...can you?

Go ahead and polish it up a little bit when you are going to speak to the tv cameras and working press members Coach Kill. You just never know who is going to be watching, listening or reading. You have a very broad, mixed audience and film clips and newspaper columns last for a long time and sometimes leave large impressions.

You can take the cussing out of the"... Kansas country talking..." when the tv cameras are rolling and it won't make it any less authentic "Kansas country talking..." Coach Kill. And the moms of the young kids will love you for it forever!

PR lesson number one!

; 0 )

Im sure this is the same Mom who thinks teaching abstinence will work and who will be shocked when her 14 y/o son gets arrested for doing meth at school because she never taught her kids about the real world and who doesn't have internet because of porn. Give me a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ing break....I live 20 miles from the Amish capital of PA and even they know that you can't live with your head in the sand...get a grip lady.

Wow....

Sometimes the wrong people have the seizures...

The above quote is jaw-dropping.

I feel insane because I think the usually ridiculous Wren is pretty much the only person in this thread that sounds like they have some common sense.

I generally don't agree with the letter writer, and especially after such a trying week it's clear that JK is doing the best he can under circumstances that many of us would have buckled under. We all support the guy. That letter was a bit of a waste.

But to all the rest of you, it shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility AT ALL that JK should be expected to conduct his pressers with some public speaking and PR skills. He is, after all, the leader of a Big Ten football program. This is a conference that prides itself on academics more than many of its contemporaries, and he is leading student athletes. He is the public face of a huge program that pays him a ton of money, and he should probably pay more attention to the language he puts forth in some of the more formal parts of his job, because it matters more than he likely thinks.

I will absolutely play the culturist (NOT race) card right now, and say that if our rookie head coach was from an inner city and came to pressers spitting jive and almost touching on profane language, that everyone would be in an uproar.

Why is everyone getting on this woman's case? If she's so out of place, then why did Kill specifically request reporters to not repeat his salty language in their presser reports? I'm sure even Kill would tell you he could have brought it down a few notches since he made that request afterwards. Do I think it's silly to spend time writing to the editor about it? Yes. But she's totally within her right to do so, and I also don't think it's so ridiculous that she has the opinion that he could clean it up, at least when he speaks publicly. Extending it to worrying about his swearing to the team is a bit much, but again, that's her prerogative.

No one disputed her right to write whatever letter to the editor she wants. But people also have a right to criticize. You said yourself the letter was silly.

She probably doesn't even watch college football for fear of seeing a coach mouth out a naughty word. She is currently writing a letter to espn, abc, cbs, fox, nbc for showing football games and not editing out the big hits. Too violent. No animals allowed at this household either. They will sometimes hump inadament objects. Seriously, if you don't like it go somewhere else. For every one percent of people who find this offensive, 75 percent don't give a rats ass, and 24 percent enjoy seeing a coach act like a real human being by showing some fire. I know potential recruits and current players would likely fall in that 24 percent.

I'm sure even Kill would tell you he could have brought it down a few notches since he made that request afterwards.

He didn't make it after, he made it during (early on I believe).

Can you just see Coach Kill out on the football field yelling at a player in this woman's perfect world?

"Golly gee wilikers, Eddie, you've got to work harder than that."

or

"Aw shucks, Gary, you need to take a better angle than that."

I have a feeling that she is a proponent of giving all participants a trophy at a sports tournament.

I support Mrs. Moen.

Here is how I would talk to Gray. "Get the angle down, now, or you'll be riding pine until your scholarship is up. Forget the NFL. Forget the big pay checks. Forget the pretty girls flocking to you every time your car door opens. By the way, a used Hyundai is in your future if you can't correct for the right angle. You might even be riding a bus the rest of your natural life."

This makes me want to look up Carol Moen's address in New Brighton, go to her house, knock on the door, and when she answers I would let out the loudest "F**K!!!!!" that I've ever said. I hope someone else does this for me since I live so far away. following that I would want a preacher to show up to her door step yelling "DAMN" and "HELL"

That sounds completely sane.

The timing of it is what is pathetic in my opinion. From what we've seen and heard so far, Kill isn't one to go crazy with profanities. He's just had a lot going on in the last two weeks, so give the guy a break (not talking directly at you, just to everyone in general). He has to be exhausted right now.

Thanks, wasn't sure if it was during or after. But clearly, he knew all weren't meant to consume of it lol.

I understand that, and I actually agree, he's been through all kinds of stuff the last couple weeks. I guess I'm just amazed at how much vitriol people are sending her way. I mean, saying she should have seizures and saying you wanna go to her house and berate her and stuff? Really?

And this lady sounds completely sane? Some people just need a rude awakening to reality, and this woman is one of them.

Hmm.....which is sane and which is insane:

A woman asking "please, watch your language when you're speaking in public" or "I'm going to go to a complete stranger's house, knock on their door and scream F*** in her face".

I'm stumped. I'll have to sleep on it and get back to you tomorrow.

It is a hard one to figure... ;)

after Nodaks comment I am amazed this thread is still open/here.

If, if you can't take this language, at a Division I, Big Ten School, then you ain't human!

I need to know what jacket she was wearing when she wrote that email before I can properly form a response.

gloved gopher, were you at punch pizza before the miami ohio game? I saw a Gopher fan with football gloves in his back pocket and I thought it had to be GHs gloved gopher! before I had time to ask, you had left.
Sorry not me. I've never set foot in Punch Pizza in my lifetime. I always tailgate in the Ski-U-Mah lot before games and my gloves are one of a kind. You should be able to recognize them when u see them.

What's Kill's buyout again, and what are your terms?

I think the lady's letter was silly but some of the hate towards her seems a little over the top.

I agree, although I didn't hear what Kill had to say that day the way some people respond really show their true intellectual level.

GopherinPhilly,

1. Are you serious? What is the Amish capital of Pennsylvania? I would think it is Lancaster. If you drive 20 miles east of Lancaster on US-30, you are still in Lancaster County, somewhere between Gap and Parkesburg.
