Souhan blasts Teague, says he's unwilling to fulfill his duties as it relates to Kill

Souhan has delivered a rebuttal to the criticism of his Column.
Answering the criticism towards his insensitivity

"No, I don't think I'm being cruel, I think many of you are being cruel. Kill has had four seizures on game days in 16 home games at Minnesota. The stress of the job seems to have a negative effect on him. You shouldn't want him to put himself in that position for your entertainment.

His article was about Teague though ...

“You can’t because you are disabled”

I guess I am should not be negotiating and writing temp labor contracts because I am dyslexic. I wish Souhan would have told me that before I wasted the last decade of my life doing just that for a Fortune 100 company.

I don’t post here much, but this really upsets me. I was shaking mad when I read this. In fact this is my second draft. My first one would have gotten me thrown off the board.

Souhan is looking right into the eyes of thousands of little kids and saying “You can’t because you are disabled”. People like Kill, that are succeeding in life even with a disability, mean everything to a little kids struggling with disabilities. Doctors and specialist point to these successful people say “look you can do it”. I am glad that Jim Abbott didn’t have a bully like Jim Souhan telling him he couldn’t play Major-League Baseball because he only had one hand.

I will freely admit I have a soft spot for the Gophers and Kill. My dad played on the 67 championship team under Murray Warmath I grew up hearing encouragement like “If at first the breaks are going against you, don’t give up! Put on more steam” (Murray quote). It may sound corny, but it is better than reading you can’t because your brain doesn’t work like everyone else’s.

Souhan was going ga ga over the Vikes before the season - having them going to a divisional championship game.

Soupcan only goes ga ga over himself. And he is the only person on the face of the earth that goes ga ga over him.

I'm sure he has interviewed Kill, other coaches, players, and the doctors to come to this conclusion, right?

There are presumably lots of things we would not let a serious epileptic do.

The question is whether being a B10 head football is one of them.

So, the Folks who are supporting Jerry Kill as Coach are the ones who are selfish??
We are seeing the absolute arrogance of a local Journalist.

I haven't read the article and I won't. I haven't read a Reusse column for a year and I won't. Don't give these pricks clicks. You can get everything you need to know elsewhere, Gopherhole, twitter, press conferences etc. A lot of people follow the Gopherhole, so just stop clicking on their stories, either that, or don't complain about them. Because if you're reading them AND complaining about them it only helps them.

Souhan blasts Teague, says he's unwilling to fulfill his duties as it relates...

I just gave Mr. Souhan a taste of his own medicine under the comments section to his follow up blog. The jerk can't even make an effort to proofread his column, what an arrogant piece of work.

When Jerry kill came he laid out a lot of things he wanted to do with the program. He is pretty much on track. Grades are up penaltys are down (2 yesterday)Progress is definitely being made. I would like to tell Norwood to stick to his guns. Maybe coach should go to the press box so sensitive people don't see. He does a great job of recruiting and coaching during practice where l players get better. Listening to coach Limegrover this morning on the Sid and Dave show, it sounds like they are perfectly prepared for this situation. Most kids understand what is going on and can still function. 2nd half looked much better than the 1st. Leave coach Kill alone and give him his 4 recruiting classes.

I don't know what to do about the Souhan article. I oppose his opinion, but I am not sure he is not being humane in his, in some oddball manner. I don't think Souhan needs to be fired. It is a legitimate question. I asked the same question at the beginning of Jerry Kill's tenure. I am satisfied that the Gophers hired the right coach and staff. I believe they have a plan to continue operations during a coach Kill seizure. I believe that Jerry Kill is doing a fantastic job preparing the team and coaching them during game days. Is his job detrimental to his health? Well, maybe yes. Is that any of my concern as a fan? No, because Jerry Kill can determine his own risks as being acceptable or not. The real question that Souhan asks is whether a coach can and should be allowed medical time off during important times of his work? I would assume game days are critical. And, Souhan's suggestion that a fourth of his time away from game coaching is a real strain on his job responsibilities due to the fact he becomes incapacitated from performing his duties, which is a factual and objective question. Is it fair to the University to accept this condition. I believe the Assistant AD answered that question on behalf of the U well. The U has faith in the ability of coach Kill to do his job well and that his condition during game day seizures does not detrimentally affect the performance of his job or the teams. How the U views Jerry Kill is just like any other employee. I think based on Jerry's performance, pay, team performance and other requirements of his job, he seems to be doing an outstanding job. He recruits well. He has improved the academics of the team. He is a solid coach and role model. His record with the team is improving and his reputation as a coach and as a person is outstanding in the community. It is my professional opinion that Jerry Kill remain the head coach of the UofM football team because he is an asset to the people of the great state of Minnesota. Why? Because Jerry Kill performs his job extremely well, inspite of his physical condition.

I wish him well.

+1

I appreciate your post, your perspective, and you achieved your purpose.

You need to email this to him.

When is he on radio next? 1500 ESPN tomorrow at noon?

We need to make him answer some serious questions about this article and I will be calling in as soon and as often as possible.

Thanks.

If the Gophers go 12-0 this year and Jerry Kill misses four games due to his health condition, do we need to get Brewster back - because he never missed a game, and he was known for his recruiting?

Great post s93skier. Thanks.

If the seizures ultimately result in a much more serious medical state for Kill you may have to. Which is sort of the point of the discussion. Is there additional risk for Kill with each seizure and is coaching contributing to or making the seizures worse? If the answer to both of those is yes, I'd rather have Brewster than be 12-0 and have Kill threatening his life every single game.

Those two questions are really the crux of the issue. IMO, missing game and the public perception is a very minor aspect, although it does exist as an issue.

My biggest concern is would the University let Kill worsen his condition if it meant going 12-0 & they are winning? That is something him and his doctors are hopefully discussing and I don't think anyone here can know for certain either way.

The Star Tribune is a business. I'm willing to bet they'd sacrifice ethics for clicks. Souhan's latest piece surely generated a hell of a lot of clicks. In the end, he comes out ahead. The solution is to not give him the click. Resist the temptation.

Let's leave it up to Kill and his doctors, rather than play doctor and speculate.

Teague f'd up by not talking to the media, even if all he was going to say was a repeat of the statement they issued.

That said, this article is trash, even by Souhan standards. Comparing Kill's B1G record to his # of seizures? Really Jim? Really? You've finally topped your ignorant column ripping Xavier before the NCAA tournament. A new low.

This was where I came out as well. I understand there are folks who are genuinely concerned about Kill's health. Souhan is not one of them however. After that particular gem of a line, he tried to cover his butt by sort of saying Kill is a good guy and the situation is sad. To me, he blew his cover with that one sentence however.

Nope. Much like not clicking any links to his articles, I switch the station at noon. Judd & Dubay are great from 9-noon, but I won't listen after noon. No support for Souhan. No support for Reusse.

I do agree there, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it here.

I leave all coaching hire decisions to Norwood, but I will certainly still discuss it on a message board when we are making one.

Alexander the Great, Napoleon Bonaparte, Harriet Tubman, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Vincent van Gogh, Peter Tchaikovsky, Richard Burton and Lil Wayne all share something with our coach. They had seizures. We are lucky to have a coach with the courage to show people epilepsy is a condition that people can achieve great things with. The few hours he may miss as he recovers from seizures is more than made up for by the great coaching he does in the other thousands of hours he dedicates to our University.

That's a pretty good list. Thanks for posting. The state of Minnesota has a special opportunity here. We need to support him. Let he and his doctors and NT decide if/when enough is enough. Pray that our most influential boosters feel the same way.

People are really getting after Jimmy in the comments. In his blog he mentioned he received a few thousand hate emails. Ill be sending an email to his bosses. Hopefully momentum builds and he gets canned.

Why? Don't all coaches insist that there players get up after they're knocked down and battle through it? Here's a coach that lives it.
