Souhan blasts Teague, says he's unwilling to fulfill his duties as it relates to Kill

Okay, I'm biased. My father was an epileptic, and I know all too well how cruel people can be towards those who suffer from that affliction. Souhan is just another example. I would suggest that we not jump to conclusions or speculate as to how Coach Kill's condition will affect his ability to build the Gopher Program. His epilepsy has not prevented him from being successful in the past. He is fortunate to have a loyal staff - which speaks well of his character - that has been able to fill in when he has not been able to perform. Today, we actually did much better in the second half - without Coach Kill on the sidelines - than we did in the first. There is no evidence that I am aware of that his condition is likely to prevent him from achieving a similar result here as he has achieved in the past. I would urge that we judge Kill on his results, not speculation that is inconsistent with his past performance.

According to people who were actually there...Souhan wasn't even at the game today. He's in Chicago covering the Vikings. He wrote.this article.from his hotel room. He wouldn't even have been there to talk to Teague. What a piece of sh!t

Sounds Souhan just had a couple of drinks. Obviously the 19-year-olds and the assistant coaches stepped in and did just fine.

Souhan got suspended last year?? Was that public news? I don't remember that.

Crap article. He acts as if coaches aren't human, he writes without any heart.

I don't care what he thinks, because I think he doesn't care.

Souhan got suspended last year?? Was that public news? I don't remember that.

If such is true, I am pissed at Souhan because he did not have a press conference WITH HIS BOSS to take questions.

I think I know why, tho. No one but Reusse would have shown up.

Souhan got suspended last year?? Was that public news? I don't remember that.

Souhan was suspended last year for writing a column about State Rep. Dean Urdahl's lack of support for the Viking Stadium.
Souhan misrepresented Urdahl's position and showed total disregard for the facts.
It was made public that the Star tribune was suspending Souhan for his misstatements.

1500: Wetmore: Norwood Teague mishandled Kill seizure from a PR standpoint

Athletics Director Norwood Teague did not speak after the game. He will speak later this week, according to the department. In a 24-hour news cycle, however, not addressing a public incident creates more room for speculation and unanswered questions.

Strike one.

Instead, Werle read a prepared statement and then refused to take questions.

Strike two.

Acting head coach Tracy Claeys then had to answer the questions on Kill. (The sense from listening to Claeys is that the players and the rest of Kill's staff is well-equipped to handle the situation. They're mindful of the health of their boss, but they're accustomed to the uncertainty.) Claeys, who has worked with Kill since 1995, addressed the situation admirably but that shouldn't be his burden.

Teague's handling of Kill's latest episode is untenable; fans and the media deserve better than that.

When Claeys concluded, several student-athletes had to answer questions about the coach. That's strike three.

The problem with having Claeys and student-athletes field questions is they're in no position to answer the largest elephant in the room: can Jerry Kill coach this team if his recurring seizures prevent him from being on the field during games?

They work for Kill. The only person who can answer that line of questioning is Kill's boss, Teague. If Teague believes Kill can continue to do the job, a post-game press conference offered the perfect opportunity to let everyone know.

A canned statement and a refusal to field questions, no matter the reason, is a weak attempt to control the message. It's irresponsible.

Go Gophers!!

Pure garbage. I'm glad Jim Souhan wasn't the arbiter of what we we "shouldn't have to see" in 1932.

Jimmy Boy...I would suggest that you keep your mouth shut, so you don't
show how freaking stupid you can really be at times! You are one sick person!

Seek help! Trust me, you need it!

Ask yourself this question Mr. Souhan, put yourself in Jerry Kill's shoes. If you are one of the people who for one reason or another developed seizures but is able to function and work, should the Strib relief you of your job because you can become a distraction in the office? Or should the Strib keep you on the merits of your writing talent and become a productive member of society?

Frankly, I think you are a sloppy writer, but that is beside the point.

"Kill suffers a seizure on game day as the coach of the Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium exactly as often as he wins a Big Ten game. He’s 4-for-16 in both categories."

Probably the most classless comment I have ever seen from a local Columnist.
Last year, Souhan was suspended by the Tribune. Maybe this time he should be fired.

+1. Unbelievable.

I don't like Souhan. Generally, he's a hack.

That said, I don't disagree with a lot of what he says here. Gloss it over all you want, but this is not healthy for the Gopher program.

The man has exposed himself as just a plain bad human being. As far as being bad for the program , kneejerk media and fan reactions so close to the fact are pointless. This isn't an issue that is black and white. I don't know what Souhan wanted to ask Teague? How many seizures does he get before you fire him? I'm not sure what he expected to here. Here's Jerry's medical chart check it out? The amount of prejudice and bias torward epileptic people by fans and media has been shameful.

"Saturday, when those generous enough to express interest in the Gophers football program asked to speak with Teague about Kill’s condition and the ramifications of his latest collapse, word was sent through an underling that he would not take questions until later in the week."

I want to thank Jim Souhan for his generousity in expressing interest in the Gopher football program. If it were not his job, I am sure he would be using his generousity in an equally productive manner. What a self important jack ass. Writing trash like this will not make his generousity more graciously received.

so wait Souhan doesn't like the Gophers? Why didn't somebody notice this earlier.

Next. We're 3-0 and face a good team next week. Kill is in good health. Let's focus on that.

"No one who buys a ticket to TCF Bank Stadium should be rewarded with the sight of a middle-aged man writhing on the ground." Thank you Jim. Nailed it. I sit near the "accessible" seating behind the visitor's bench. Do you have any idea how many handicapped people I've had to suffer through watching? They parade kids with cerebal palsy through there. I shouldn't have to look at that. Then on top of everything, there was an older gentleman behind me yesterday that required medical attention because he got too much sun/beer. I didn't pay to have my day interrupted by medical personnel. The U owes me my money back.

How did I know Souhan would take the anti-Gopher side on this issue? The only thing missing is the Ruesse follow up.

+ Great post. Perhaps forward it to the Star trib.

Was going to post the same quote with the same flawed logic. If someone in the stands has a seizure would Jim be equally appalled? I think I'll email him and copy his boss. Following Jims logic, I should fully expect a response from him boss.

"The entire school became the subject of ridicule."

The U of MN is being laughed at because our football coach had a seizure? Who is laughing at the university over someone having a seizure? I count one person, Souhan.

I would like to ridicule Jim. Here's to bumping into him somewhere.

Yeah, I'm sure Claeys and the players wouldn't have had to answer questions about this if Teague had spoken. Give me a break.

Noticed/thought that also. Sometimes Souhan's reasoning is very strange.

There's a reason many of us stopped reading the star and sickle and stick to the fish wrap across the river that actually turns a profit. I really don't give a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# what some moron in mpls thinks of the AD. He has a job and can write what he wants, but I'll never pay for it...

Anger over Souhan's Column is going national. David Axelrod is a big time heavy weight. Former Senior adviser to the President, Analyst for NBC News, over a quarter million followers. This may be Shouhan's worst nightmare.

Souhan has delivered a rebuttal to the criticism of his Column.
Answering the criticism towards his insensitivity

"No, I don't think I'm being cruel, I think many of you are being cruel. Kill has had four seizures on game days in 16 home games at Minnesota. The stress of the job seems to have a negative effect on him. You shouldn't want him to put himself in that position for your entertainment.
