Sid: Gophers to Break Ground on $70M Football Facility in Dec UPDATED: Nanne says no

Meanwhile, Glen Taylor about to purchase the STrib:

DEVELOPING: According to multiple people “in the know”, Taylor Corporation and MN Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is very close to reaching an agreement to buy the Star Tribune. Taylor has expressed an interest previously, and has intensified negotiations recently. One person with knowledge of the transaction suggested that think that there is “an agreement in principle.” The Star Tribune is currently owned by a series of outside investment groups led by Wayzata Investment Partners. who bought the newspaper out of bankruptcy.

Go Gophers!!

I'm going the glass half-full route. Sid didn't make this up entirely out of thin air and there has been a significant step but they just weren't ready to announce it.

I don't put anything past Sid, but I have a hard time believing the Star Tribune editors would simply run with a story that big from 93 year-old whose never been shy about shooting from the hip without doing some level of fact-checking. I didn't expect the U to come out and confirm this today, though the complete and total denial by Nanne is concerning.

Could be the donors specified it to go to football. NT said they would have this option from the beginning.

Possibly, but other than T. Denny, who I doubt is the source of this $$ (if there even is any) I haven't heard of any big-time 'football only' donors.

Nanne said there wasn't. I would be surprised if there was absolutely nothing behind the rumors.

I would be surprised if there was absolutely nothing behind what Ryan Burns reported and Sid-The-Kids report (granted his timeline, dollar amount, etc. are probably garbage).

Outside of his timeline, dollar amount and etc, what is else there? Sure, a facility will probably be built at some time, for some dollar figure. So yes, if we strip timeline and dollar figure out the report, Sid was probably right!! But the news was the timeline and the dollar figure. Otherwise we can just say: Star Tribune reports the Gophers will build a practice facility! Though timeline and dollar amount are yet to be determined.

Go Gophers!!

That's what I am thinking. There is probably someone close to the university that gave Sid some information. My guess is that some of the specifics that he reported are erroneous.

Again, the only specifics that made this news was the money and the timeline. If he got both wrong, there was no news and everything he reported was false.

Go Gophers!!

Well my sources say Sid was mostly right out had the dollar figure wrong. Instead of 70 million, it was actually 700 000 the U was committing.

As the deal has fallen part, Joel Maturi's house is now back on the market.

Old people that hang on to their job for waaaaaaay too long is becoming a huge annoyance of mine. Sid, Herb Kohl as owner of the Bucks, and career politicians are at the top of my list of examples.

From hearing Sid talk recently there's no way he writes his own column anymore. If this article is highly inaccurate, I think the Strib is more to blame than Sid himself. If you're going to employ a 95 year old columnist that is clearly going downhill, either fire him or do some heavy editing on the material he puts out there, especially when it comes to checking sources, etc.

And the article is still up - which further confuses me. Despite that i think he should have retired awhile ago, I wan't to believe Sid actually knows something and just leaked it too soon. I am prepared, ultimately, however, for a letdown.

When I worked in the media relations department of one of the Twin Cities' professional teams 20 years ago, Sid would call in his column to a person on the copy desk and they would write it for him. And there were many instances when he would call me and ask for storylines/stats, etc. about our players that he'd ultimately tell me to write up and send to the copy desk, which they would print verbatim. At one point in his way-too-long career I'm sure he was sitting at a typewriter hacking his column out, but not within the last 25-30 years.

I'm beginning to see how it happened. Sid cornered Maturi in his offfice and demanded to know when they would finally break ground. December or when? 'Yeah, real soon, then. Could be then. Could be 5 years from now, dontchaknow?. Never make a decision until you have to.' How much are they spending? $30 million? $50? $70? 'Yeah, sure. Something like that. Could be $70 million. Could be $20 million. Never make a decision until you have to.'

Between Sid only hearing half of this and an inadvertant wink, here we are.

From a friend who works at the Strib in the sports department:

"Just talked to a sports reporter and Sid is in very hot—scalding hot—water on this thing. "

And those Popes! Talk about hangers-on.

Good, but does he even understand what people say to him anymore?

At least it is easy to speculate Herb Kohl is holding on in an attempt to keep the Bucks in Milwaukee.

I'm amazed that they haven't pulled the article yet. That alone gives me some hope that Sid had a legitimate source, and Nanne is peeved that he posted it so early. *Leave me alone with my hopes and dreams*

Edit: My favorite part of the article is that everyone's name in the last bullet point is bolded except Tubby Smith. Classic.

Yes there is light at the end of the tunnel. My problem with him is more that he demands to go for the 8th seed every year and meddles in the front office too much.

If Sid is forced in to retirement because of this debacle it will have been worth the disappointment.

I'd hope the water is at least as hot for whoever gave the green light to publish this. If I come home and my daughter is playing with matches, I'm mad at my daughter, but I'm furious with the babysitter who probably spent all night texting on her phone.

Pretty much this. To put this all on Sid is ridiculous. The Strib has known what they were signed up for for at least a decade.

Sid was at a dinner with some big time boosters, the sly fox pretended to dose off for a couple 13-14... got the whole scoop.

Long live Sid (wait, he already has).

8:15 still up. Are we hoping it's mostly true but Sid blew it by not keeping it hush hush?
