Sid: Gophers to Break Ground on $70M Football Facility in Dec UPDATED: Nanne says no

I need to read/hear from someone else. Not only is Sid not credible, but he doesn't seem to have anyone really checking his work at the Strib.

And at $70 million, I'm guessing that's going to include something else.

And to a couple of others points, if it is for football, I agree that it was probably Sanford or someone else that wrote a football only check.

I haven't asked for much in return, but don't be surprised to see my name (MN) on a wall somewhere when it is finished.

My sources tell me they might name the team after you.

In the football forum they are saying a fortune 500 company donated $35 million for the training table.

I wonder if this is a Denny check with the stipulation it can only be used for football.

That would be fine with me if that's the case because a big chunk toward a football facility frees up future monies for basketball. It significantly accelerates the process, as this news would indicate.

Breaking ground in December? After the winter from hell, I wonder if that is such a good idea ?

I'm guessing they want to wait until the regular season is over, but start as soon as possible after that. The metrodome demolition has been going on all winter and I haven't seen any indication that the weather has caused any delays.

Anyone hear from GW lately? I wonder if he'll still find a way to condescendingly bash Norwood and Nanne.

If he runs and hides over this development you can always tweet disparaging comments at the pin-dick (@JBBauer612).

I think a big part of this is the recent success of the football team.

Basketball would be well served to win the darn NIT (shows promise), sign some recruits this off season, and make the tournament next year. There was a discussion of NCAA vs. bowl games. Let's say Gophers win the NIT and are "team 69" that is still a harder accomplishment than just making a bowl game IMO.

Pitino has been around coaching his whole life. He's been around donors, college athletics, etc. since around the time he was born. I have no doubt he will create the same momentum Kill has and get basketball a donation soon as well.

Or maybe Rick Pitino and Ricky Rubio can just go ahead and buy it for us, I'm sure they have some money saved up. The Rubio Pitino Practice Facility. (Or the blonde Pitino practice facility for you English speakers. )

Huge hats off to NT and to corporations and people in Minnesota making this donation. Such an awesome gesture for the school and sports. Perfect timing too even for bball to say we just raised $70m in football, wait until you see what we do for basketball.

I wonder if the basketball team would be allowed to use any parts of the football facility as well?

We here at LateNightDooshers think there's a 2% chance that Trevor Mbakwe will be found guilty of destroying the contract for the practice complex (which I have seen but will not show to you) while Teague continues to give false promises of a facility while never breaking ground my man. Go Marquette!

There. Now you have your daily dose of GW.

That was obviously a joke. TCF Bank paid $35 million for the actual stadium, over 25 years!

It was from Ryan Burns, one of the main Gopher recruiting experts...

@MVofDT you are right on sir. I forget which Fortune 500 company in town it was, but they're putting down $35 million for the training table

That's going to be a nice training table

This is stolen from the football forum but here is an example of what is meant by training table and would benefit all sports.

And as far as next winter goes, it will be a lot warmer than this one if El Nino develops this summer.

If they can afford a $70 million phase of the overall project, why can't they do the basketball practice facility and the first $50 million of the football facility? Surely there is some part of that that can be completed later? Nothing against Kill or the football team. but to give football a $300 million dollar stadium AND a $70 million dollar practice facility all in the 7 years that have passed since you promised to do something about basketball and have done squat is not good optics if I'm Pitino or any future coach or basketball recruit.

I agree, but maybe we should wait to hear from Teague and Co. before jumping to conclusions. Some people here were calling for Teague's head about 2 days ago (and beyond) because he was an incompetent fundraiser. Let's see what the U says.

Since the new football facility will be where the track is, I'm wondering if the new basketball facility will be going where the current football facility is. Then it would make sense to relocate football before starting the basketball facility.

That's no fun. We need to jump to some conclusions. I sense this will somehow end up Maturi's fault.

Can we get this moved to the "All Things Practice Facility Thread"? This is really cluttering up the forum.

I don't think the U is in position to turn down football facility money because basketball hasn't gotten theirs. It's not like they just get a general bucket of money and can allocate it wherever they please. And let's face it, football rules all, and if donors are willing to give money to that more than the basketball practice facility, so be it.

Could be the donors specified it to go to football. NT said they would have this option from the beginning.

i would think part of the reason for donating $35 million would be name recognition and good will-- and the first guy to mention it "forgets" what company it was. Give the company the plug it deserves
