Shooter: A top candidate was interviewed Wed. in Minn, deal could be announced soon

Really?

2011 - 5th best class in the country.
2012 - 1 recruit a 5 star
2013 - 2 recruits (including 6th best center in the country).

He has recruited incredibly well at Alabama. If he has issues at Bama, it's NOT recruiting, he's done nothing but cement his position as a good recruiter at Bama.

I agree with you. People here would be thrilled with recruiting classes like this. And he happens to be a good coach; his track record in taking over at Alabama has been pretty good IMO. He would be a solid hire here.

He can get them but he hasn't done anything with them.

He has a good SEC record but his slower system and the fact that they went to the NIT has given him a bad perception on here. They did go 12-6 in conference (they weren't a bad team).

However, the people who are saying that he isn't a good recruiter don't follow him and just guessed.

Except vastly improve their program.

3 seasons leading up to his hire at Bama - .400 conference winning percentage
His conference winning percentage - .590

Pretty big jump for three seasons.

People who would not be excited about Anthony Grant are not paying attention. Shaka is the big name, would have loved to have him, but AG is on the same level, and was successful in the tourney during his tenure at VCU.

Due to the recruits he's getting I'm saying he hasn't done anything in the tournament. I'm sure Bama' fans were expecting to do some damage in the tournament this year just like Gopher fans were.

They might have been, but with how bad the SEC was this year it wasn't super easy to make the tournament. They went 12-6 with a pretty young team in the SEC. They haven't lived up to their expectations, but I think you'll see Bama do pretty well next year. I could be wrong.

But mainly, that's an opinion. It's funny how this thread has changed from "How do we know Grant can recruit?" to "Well, he hasn't done anything with them.".

Never doubted he can recruit you can check his classes and tell. Still don't think he's one of the best recruiters in the country almost half of the big names he got we're from in-state.

Grant doesn't have the name recognition of Shaka, but his record at Bama is respectable. He wins conference games and recruits well. He wouldn't be my first choice, but I wouldn't freak out if was the guy.

I wasn't calling you out specifically, just some of the posters here.

It's tough to say. You can't compare recruiting to Bama to Kentucky. But as far as recruiting to a place that isn't a traditional basketball powerhouse, he's done a great job. He also recruited well for Florida (that's sort of where he became).

As far as the kids being from instate.

Yep, Lacy from Alabama had offers from Kentucky, Kansas, and UCONN (and Bama hadn't been to the dance in 5 years). I still give him quite a bit of credit for keeping Lacy home.

If one of his strengths in recruiting is to keep the in-state talent at home that might just come in handy say for the 2014 class.

DON'T PRINT THAT

A little birdie says a top Gophers men's basketball coaching candidate was interviewed in Minnesota on Wednesday, and a contract announcement should be soon.

You left off the next sentence:

With Shaka Smart staying at VCU, don't be surprised if Marquette's Buzz Williams ends up with the Gophers once the Golden Eagles' season ends.

Go Gophers!!

Okay, this is what I see: "DON'T PRINT THAT

Why no discussion Buzz is our coach? I'd be shocked from what I have heard but I think that's what Shooter is saying?

I think because we mostly think it's unlikely. He is going to have a loaded team at Marquette next season (returns a bunch of starters and a great class), he supposedly made $2.8 million last year.

If it's realistic, sign me up. He'd be my #1.

Buzz Williams is not going to interview until his team is eliminated from the tournament.

If NT got Buzz he's an OG.

I got a feeling his pick will be off the grid though.

Buzz isn't coming to Minnesota because it would be a downgrade in a job. I don't care how close him and Teague are it doesn't make any sense at all.

It's Grant, hate to tell you. He's already in Minneapolis.

Then it doesn't make any sense at all for Shaka to NOT upgrade to Minnesota, but he didn't. Think about what you're saying.

Buzz might not be enjoying his boss right now from what I hear, and that's a big deal to anyone in any line of work. When I listened to Norwood interview Buzz on the radio a couple weeks ago, there was a real affection there. You could sense a special relationship.

Buzz is a pipe dream

I don't think he's necessarily coming, but the U is not a step down from Marquette. Maybe not a step up, but not down.

Sorry but not even close to the same situation.

I can see a BB coaching staff of Grants:

Bud Grant, Mike Grant, Pell Grant, Medical Grant, U.S. Grant, Grants for everyone.

Hahahaha! Oh, Doc, I just burst out laughing! Nicely done!

Buzz Williams to Minnesota is as likely as Jimmy Williams.

I'll give out generous odds for those who would like to bet. PM with offers.
