Shooter: A top candidate was interviewed Wed. in Minn, deal could be announced soon

.. this time around Shaka back stabbed him in the back.

Holy Jesus Martha, where the hell else would he back stab him?

Who the h@ll is this Grant guy?

Top assistant in Florida with Donovan, was set to take over for him when Billy accepted the Magic job. He was their primary recruiter, went to VCU had and won the conference 3 straight seasons and then got the job at Bama and has helped rebuild that program that really fell off at the end of Gottfried's tenure.

Everyone who follows college basketball closely.

Was the top recruiter for Florida under Donovan and check out his recruiting at Bama for yourself.

So it's widely accepted that he can recruit.

The "run and gun ADHD crowd" just acknowledged that a lot of different systems can work. Most people who wanted Shaka would also love Stevens and you couldn't think of two more different coaches. It's not about style, it's about getting the most out of your team.

I agree. Kids want to be coached off the court and allowed to go out and perform, without a coach calling a play every time down the court.

John Pelphrey was a top assistant to Donovan as well and he flopped when he moved up to a non mid major job. He is now back as an assistant to Donovan. I worry Grant will end up the same.

+1

Ex-Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Peeler, 43, who is an assistant men's basketball coach at Virginia Union, said Wednesday he has applied for the Gophers' head coaching job

I cant believe no one has mentioned this revelation. Talk about a dark horse candidate... Is Shooter coy enough to put the candidate in the same article? Who would actually admit to applying for a position like this?

Bama can pay what we offer no sweat, not sure why he would come up here

I can see a BB coaching staff of Grants:

Bud Grant, Mike Grant, Pell Grant, Medical Grant, U.S. Grant, Grants for everyone.

Why? Grant is considered to be one of the best recruits in the country.

Because there is almost no chance of a guy who isn't considered a national big name to come in and land 3 kids with offers from the top schools in the country without name recognition or previous success.

That's a legitimate concern. I don't think being a good assistant automatically makes you a good coach and Pelphrey seems to be an example of this. However, Grant has already been pretty successful away from Donovan.

I don't know who was considered the top recruiter between Pelphrey and Grant, but Grant is widely thought of as a top recruiter. He had the 5th ranked class in the country (at Bama) in 2011 and has followed it with a 5 star kid in 2012 and two 4 stars in 2013 (one of them is the 6th rated C in the nation).

Because basketball is an after thought at Alabama.

Your statement is completely accurate and yet isn't it incredible that the Tide can pay their afterthought basketball coach $1.8M?

And these recruits were playing in what game last night?

Bama wants a successful basketball program and that's why their investing in it.

Maybe 3 years ago. He's fizzled out a lot since going to Alabama.

Really?

2011 - 5th best class in the country.
2012 - 1 recruit a 5 star
2013 - 2 recruits (including 6th best center in the country).

He has recruited incredibly well at Alabama. If he has issues at Bama, it's NOT recruiting, he's done nothing but cement his position as a good recruiter at Bama.

And these recruits were playing in what game last night?

Yep, they haven't had a ton of success (improved A LOT in 3 years), but the question was whether he could recruit. It's an undisputed fact that he can recruit.

I misunderstood your previous post. I thought you were saying he was a "great recruit" as in the next big coach. You obviously meant recruiter. It appears he can recruit, but why the heck hasn't he been winning? And can he recruit like that at MN? It's a different animal.

I just heard this one.....

If we hire Buzz an have Kill we have - Buzzkill
