Richard Pitino Gophers Press Conference Notes

At the risk of sounding negative, I had the opposite reaction to the press conference. I heard somebody trying to blow smoke up my backside.

Look, I realize that a new coach wants to sound optimistic, but he also needs to be realistic.

Pitino said several times that the U is "one of the top jobs in the country." Sorry, that is just not true. It may have the potential to be a top job - but it is not one right now. I don't have to quote the stats on conference standings, NCAA victories, etc. He also talked about Teague being "one of the top AD's in the country." Based on what?

Based solely on listening to the press conference on the radio, my initial reaction is that this guy is a BS artist. He sounded like Eddie Haskell giving compliments to June Cleaver.

Bummer.

I don't think he "won" it when he was complimenting the U and Teague and stuff like that, those are a part of any introductory press conference. I think he "won" it when he talked about the style of play and recruiting philosophy. He got quite an applause when he said we were going to run an exciting offense.

Not a suprising reaction. Kill went out of his way to say how awful things were around here. How the players sucked and how he had a long maybe impossible re-building job ahead of him. He went over BIG TIME! Particularly when he ripped the guy who he replaced. Maybe Pitino should have left off the " great history of the program" part that was a bit of an oversell.

But so would the "We suck. The players suck. Williams arena sucks, and all you fans suck too!" As for ripping Tubby, despite the hatred expressed towards Tubby by a few fans, don't put you in that category by the way, the Pitinos hold him in pretty high regard.

If you wanted that you may have been inhaling that smoke rather than getting it "up your ass".

Respectively submitted of course.

Wedding videos???

Two things I hate...

1. Wedding videos;
2. Pens that don't write.

Pitino mentioned several times

he had spoken to Shaka Smart, and Grant (at alabama) several times and they both had worked for VCU, they both apparently gave glowing reviews of Teague and mentioned how much support he gives his coaches and maybe they even mentioned he was a top AD to work for. So I d don't think Pitiono was just blowing smoke up anyone's as$ on Teague being a top AD. As too a top job in the country, maybe not right now and maybe not a top ten type of basketball program but it certainly can be a perennial top 20 job and at 30 years old he certainly thinks he can get it to that point.
I think he won the press conference and it will be interesting to watch him over the next several year.

Just by being in the Big Ten it's one of the top jobs in the country. I thought he blew almost no smoke. No promises about championships, no promises about anything other than he promised hard work, pace of play and to grow the program. He's very optimistic he can do so and I'm downing all the koolaide I can get my hands on right now.

If you wanted a guy out there with no excitement- we fired Tubby.

Dude came from FIU, compared to that, the U is Caesar's Palace. I know he's been an assistant at Florida and Louisville, but there's no way this guy could have thought he'd get a shot this fast at a program like ours, which believe it or not, is one of the top jobs when you consider all of college basketball. I'm sure he's incredibly grateful to Teague for taking a chance on him. So yes, you better believe he's gonna big up the school and Teague as much as he possibly can.

What impressed me was the poise with which he spoke. What he was saying wasn't as important as to how he was saying it, and how he responded to a few darts that were thrown during questioning. Mentally, the guy's just got that mature aura about him that will help him immensely here, especially with how snarky our media can be at times. Whether he works out or not, I'm doubting the fact that he can BS a little bit will be a factor.

The thing I still want answered is if Pitino has any plans to get a piece of the Georgia Dome floor to put under glass to inspire the troops?

I thought he presented himself very well, is certainly full of energy and willing to work tirelessly to improve the program. I can't say our former coach was any of the above. Tubby came to Minnesota because Kentucky didn't want him and was over the peak of his career, his downward slide continues at Texas Tech, good luck Tubby. He's a great person, does things right, but sadly that doesn't sell tickets. Watching his guards constantly looking to the bench for direction was like taking in a middle school game, that and his over-subbing drove me crazy. The only negative I took from the press conference was Sid. Please Startribune, keep him locked in his cage where he belongs, how embarrasing.

Sid was Sid. By approaching the way he did, Teague came out looking like a genius. Sid hit it right on the nuts.

It's hard to keep straight Rick Pitino and Rich Pitino. Can I least call him Flip?

I was at work so had to keep turning it down whenever the boss walked in. What was Sir Sidney's question?

+1

So Sid did indeed make as ass of himself, as expected.

Did Reusse have the guts to show up? Did he make a point of insulting anybody?

No, I don't see it that way. I think everyone expected Sid to make an ass of himself, and he disappointed us. He asked one question and that was his limit for the day. Never saw or heard from Reusse.

"How does it uh feel to replace a legend like uh Tubby Smith? That's a question for you (Pitino) and uh Mr. Athletic Director, you're supposed to be the biggest genius in basketball and it took you forever to get a replacement."

The best part of the press conference was the old guy sitting next to Sid. While Sid was slurring out his questions, the dude was just about to fall out of his chair from laughter.

I clicked on this thread because I had the read a comment from someone who calls himself BieberHole69....

Sid was the smartest 93 year old in the room. He controlled himself pretty well. The geniuses thing was a nice light moment in the proceedings and I think even Pitino got a kick out of it. It's just too easy to pick on Sid. He's meant a lot to the local sports scene, helped put us on the map in some ways and I respect him for that. Yes, he should retire by any standard of competence, but sports is his life. This is kinda like the Helen Thomas of the WH press corps - it's hard to shuffle those old legends off. I think we can bear it.

Absolutely! It will be under 'gro-lights' and given a good diet of cleaner/polish and Orkin is under contract to keep away any bugs, fungi etc.

Think Woody and the boys prepped coach on Sid?

Beeg, I love you and all.. but please. Don't ever defend Vicious Sid. He's been turrible the past 10 years, and getting worse.
