Retire Randy Breuer's Jersey

You really want to compare Breu with Thompson? Really? Thompson had more athletic ability in his left toe than Breuer had in his whole body.

Dre's skill level is head and shoulders above what Breu had simply because Dre is an athlete while Breu was a big with soft touch.

I'll go further. If Breu played in today's game, he'd be playing for a team like Wofford. He'd never even be offered at a B1G school because he'd never be able to defend outside the paint and the 3 point shot would make his skill-set minimally important.

You are free to put Breu on your pedestal and wish for his name to be dangled from the rafters, but I won't join you in the celebration. He was a good player, but not worthy of the rafters.

So you're saying Breu couldn't beat out EE or Mo, that's just asinine, Breu would've also made Ralph and Colt his bitch. Heck I'd take him over Rickert, Pryz and John Thomas. Wofford lol

They should name the ice sheet at Mariucci after Herbie.

No way in hell. Once Brooks left in 1980, he sh*t on the U every chance he got. Even advised recruits to play elsewhere.

You better look behind you now and then with all of the back peddling you are doing.

NBA has nothing at all to do with his college career. Why don't you get that? But since you are fixated on it so much-Breuer played 12 seasons in the NBA...12. Not a bad career no matter if he was a starter or a role player.

No one arguing with you on this is hell bent on getting his jersey hung up. We are only defending his "all time gopher great' career he had. You have written that he was nothing more than a role player. That is purely insane. He was easily a top 10 guy of all time. All around game? Who cares? No one worries about an all around game when you are a Center and one that averaged 20 and 9.

Stop back peddling.

Donny, I just shrug my shoulders at you and others who wish to immortalize the Breu. If you want his name hanging from the rafters, then be my guest to push for it. I just won't join you. For me, it's clear that Breu was in the right place at the right time with the right coach, but he - as a pure basketball player - was not elite. Heck, even Jim Petersen went on to have a more productive basketball career. If you want to put average up in the rafters...be my guest.

"Average" players aren't named Team MVP or 1st Team All-B1G twice. Why can't you understand this?

Jim Peterson is another Gopher Great but has nothing to do with this conversation, nor does the NBA. If the topic was "Was Randy Breuer an All-Time NBA Great?" the answer would obviously be "No", but it's not the topic. This conversation is about All-Time Gopher Greats, of which Breuer is undeniably one.

Petersen turned into a solid pro player but he wasn't even close to Breuer while at the U in terms of production. I liked Petersen, but he arguably underachieved at the U coming in (I believe) as a McDonalds All-American. Definitely blossomed as a pro

Yep.

Wow, you guys really knocked Randy's defense out of the park so I will only make one comment:

Thompson was the best center ever to play for the U. Randy was the 2nd best (McHale was a PF and Randy's stats where better than his anyway). If you can't compare the best to the 2nd best, than what the hell can you compare?

Tiny, your view of the game of basketball if obviously faulty at some level and I understand, see the point of, and respect every argument for and against Randy's jersey retirement on this thread except for yours. Your arguments are beyond the understanding of just about every person on this thread.

Tiny, did you ever watch Breuer play? I can't imagine that you did with some of your comments. His hook shot was basically unstoppable against the other premier centers in the league and I don't know why that would be different in the current era. I still look back fondly on his epic battles with Uwe Blab and others from that era.

Just finish reading this entire thread. Tiny loses this argument. Not even close.

I watched Breu and McHale from high school on up. In fact, McHale played in scrimmages against my team when he was in high school, so yes I am very familiar with Breu. McHale ate the Breu up for lunch in every practice they had at the U. The Brue was the only person I've ever seen with a negative vertical jump!!! :p Breu was good for what he could provide, but hardly rafter-worthy in my opinion.

I get Jr. Breu wanting to pimp his pop, but I'm not buying.

I hope you understand that I don't care. In fact it's been rather enjoyable watching some of you pop a vessel over the Lumbering Lummox from Lake City.

What happened, did the Brew do a poster dunk on you in high school!!!!!!! You need to put aside whatever personal issues that you have with Brew and look at the stats. Since you are so into physical stats rather than game results, I suspect that you want Rodney's jersey to be hanging from the rafters. Brews stats show that his number should be retired

Is this serious? They played together for 1 year. That means Randy was a freshman and McHale was a senior. I don't feel like explaining what kind of difference that makes both physically and exp. level. I don't have much faith in your basketball IQ...

Do you think I care? However, your dad didn't graduate from college...even with a the whole thing being paid for him...so I wouldn't bring up IQ if I were you.

Heck, if we wanted to go with pure talent of players who didn't graduate from the U, I'd vote for Mark Olberding ahead of the Breu during that same era. Breu's best year was his senior year and the team made it to the NIT and not the NCAA tourney. If he's rafter worthy he should have carried that team to an NCAA birth at minimum.

I understand you love your dad. I appreciate your wish for your dad to have his name in the rafters. I don't think he was such an elite player that he deserves that honor.

Nothing he did. However, I find the idea of Breu doing a poster dunk hilarious considering his vertical struggles to lift his feet off Mother Earth! As for Rodney, just go and check my comments regarding Rodney and you'll know how much I felt Rodney was overrated. Honestly...I'm just an extremely picky grader when it comes to retiring a number and putting a persons name in the rafters. I just don't think the Breu was good enough for that honor.

Third all time scorer......fourth if you count Leonard. Sounds worthy to me.

Now you are just being a jerk and a poor loser.

Like I said in a post earlier in this thread regarding tinyarch:

"The arguer one gets, the wronger he is."

tinyarch, take a break and go argue for something useful.

Was this a competition or just a place to voice an opinion? I love how people imagine that there is some tally mark being done in a secret GH underground room.

I don't view the Breu as anything other than a serviceable center who benefited from an era where there was no three point shot. He was what he was. Slow and plodding, but with soft hands and a nice touch within 10 feet. Not rafter worthy.

Sorry, the game is now over and you lost. Better luck next time.

For somebody who doesn't care, you sure are persistent.
