Reid Travis Press Conference Notes - Likes Pitino's style, felt at home at Stanford

I know nothing about Reid Travis other than watching him play basketball at a high level.....You people on Gopher hole act like you know him.

Do you want me to point out the hypocrisy, or is it readily apparent to you?

The Travis press conference was pretty tame compared to some I've seen. Most of the top and even many just below the top hoops and football recruits do this. I'll fault the timing and blame him and those around him for not doing it a few days sooner or later instead of hours before the opener.

As for playing the fan base, the negative reactions of the past day show that Travis would have taken major heat regardless of when he ruled out the U of M. Waiting until spring to commit would have possibly cost him the spot he wanted at Stanford or wherever. Committing sooner would have meant taking abuse for not staying home sooner if he decided to leave. Even if he had no intention of staying, and I'm actually betting the Gophers were #2 and in the hunt late, this was the right time to publicly choose just the wrong day.

Well, I guess you can take solace in the fact that RT doesn't care what you think.

If you don't think that 17-18 year old don't care what others think of them then you apparently don't live on the planet we call "Earth". Feel free to disagree with my take but do so without making such an asinine comment trying to disrespect me.

Wow. Some of you are pathetic. Reid Travis is one of the classiest kids you will ever meet. That is part of the reason why it would have been so great to have him at the U. I wanted him to stay home just as badly as everyone else, but the people that are ripping him here need to Get. A. Life. He's an intelligent, talented young man that chose to attend Stanford. As a Gopher fan, that sucks. As a person, good for you, Reid.

Great post. Thank you for this

Sure he does. Athletes, as well as people, generally want to be liked. He basically said at the press conference that I hope Ben Johnson is still my friend. No one wants to be spurned and hated by the community they grew up in.

He hopes his long time acquaintance Ben Johnson remains his friend is a tad different than I hope John Galt and slim tubby will still cheer for me.

If Reid was a local kid going to Stanford on a math club scholarship, I'd congratulate him on a great choice.

But being that he's a basketball player with NBA aspirations, it's a choice that smacks of "name brand choosing" rather than wisdom. Or knee jerk choice based on a little snow here this week and a very big Stanford national tv football game on the eve of his decision and possibly some extra lobbying from Coach K once he knew he was out. Either way, as a fan it sucks to lose a 5* local kid to an INFERIOR team. It's hard enough fending off the Duke's and Kansas's of the world, now we're losing recruits to f'ing Stanford?

Stanford basketball = 0 NCAA tourney appearances in 5 seasons under Dawkins and crew. That's FIVE SEASONS to establish your style of play, get your recruits, etc. The verdict is already in on Dawkins. He stinks.

But hey, at least Travis will get some nice NIT experience, and can occasionally be on the "Pac 10 Network" when the rest of the country is sleeping.

You makes some decent points, but to say that Stanford is and INFERIOR team is a stretch, IMO. 13/20 NCAA Tourney's vs 8/20 for MN, and more NBA players than MN as well. I do agree Dawkins is on the hot seat though.

You're dead wrong. People will always be disappointed when in-state kids don't pick the U. People will be disappointed when Tyus announces he's going to Duke or Kansas. But check the board afterwards, there won't be nearly this type of anger. RT didn't just pick Stanford. He completely disrespected the Gopher fans and coaching staff.

+1 Well said my friend

I have a question for the board. After the meltdown from posters after Reid made his decision public, did the sun still rise in the East today? I, for one, am disappointed the Reid did not stay home, but in all honesty the immature comments and opinions just showed that Reid deserves better than some of you so called fans. "He didn't follow my rules so I am gonna take my ball and go home."

Lesson learned? You better get used to bigger disappointments in your selfish future lives.

I'm sure it was a tough decision for him. It appears his parents had a lot of influence. It's an interesting decision from the basketball perspective because Stanford is in terrible condition right now. Three of their four best scorers off of an average team last year are gone.

It certainly could have been handled better, but it is what it is. On to the next guy.

All time, Minnesota has produced 41 NBA players, Stanford 26. Recently it is in Stanford's favor though.

Reid Travis doesn't care what you think of him.

That's too bad because I think he's a smart articulate young man with a very promising future. I just wish his next step was to the U as a fan. I have never once said anything negative about Reid (nor will I) other than I thought it could've been handled a little better and I'm disappointed he's not going to be a Gopher. The loss of Reid hurts more than most when you consider his his high character on and off the court.

Blown away by how so many people are reacting. Truly embarrassing.

Stanford is a good choice for him if academics are the priority. Given the reaction to "The Choice" by Lebron, imagine if he would have done that in Cleveland rather than Bristol CT. Just make a phone call to the coaches and be done with it. Disappointment, but not a heel turn moment.

All time yes, I was referring to current players, my mistake on that...

Zero NCAA appearances in 5 years under Johnny Dawkins. Don't know if he's produced any NBA players at Stanford but nobody comes to mind. Who cares how Stanford did 20 years ago?

It is very likely that Reid's chances of developing as a player were better under Pitino than under Dawkins.

It's his choice, but don't tell me it was about basketball, and to say it was about 'education' is either misguided or unwise on their part. At two world class (albeit different stylistically) universities, both provide limitless opportunities and the education will be what you make of it. This was about 'name brand' in education, prestige (in education) and maybe a midwest kid/family a little starstruck by the west coast.

I even respect him somewhat for admitting it. ("I wanted my parents to be able to say they had a kid at Harvard and a kid at Stanford.") Just didn't appreciate setting the press conf up in a manner that made all the locals think he was choosing us.

Not sure about past years, but Dwight Powell is most likely going to get drafted in 2014. They have some talent this year, so if they don't make the tourney, Dawkins probably gets fired.

As for your part about him more likely to develop into an NBA player under Pitino, where does that come from? Not trying to argue, just wondering?

Everytime a Reid Travis thread get bumped back up, it's like a kick to the nuts. Would love for these threads to get locked or just die down so I don't have to be constantly reminded of him committing elsewhere.

<Touche, Slim. This hurts on a number of levels. Getting a kid like Reid into the fold would have been huge for basketball and program purposes. I am torqued by how he handled it, but he is working in a system he did not create. If anything, it is us as fans who created all this drama over commitment announcements. It seems like these guys think they HAVE to have a press conference. A little like a bride thinking she must have some quirky little thing in her wedding because everyone else does, even if she does not like it. I am moving on, but still hanging my head in disappointment. More to it than I have time to post. Maybe later. Arrividerci.
