Reid Travis Press Conference Notes - Likes Pitino's style, felt at home at Stanford

You obviously aren't understanding the issue. It's not that he didn't pick the U, it's the way he went about it. He had no intention of coming here and played the fan base.

I don't disagree. And how many of them happen every year in football and basketball? It's the trend. It's been going on for years. It's not my cup of tea, but are you truly hurt and offended by this? Seriously? It's a slice of harmless self-importance - WHICH HAS SOME OF ITS ORIGINS IN THE OVER-THE-TOP ATTENTION THESE KIDS GET FROM THINGS LIKE THIS VERY MESSAGE BOARD! While "self important" may accurately characterize many of the kids that put on this sort of show, that is not the case with Reid Travis.

Move on. He didn't pick the U of M. Tyus isn't going to. Rashad isn't going to, either. Rise above the urge to allow your hurt feelings blast away at high school kids.

How is everyone here such an expert on Reid Travis' college decision?

1. Anyone smart enough to get into Stanford would be smart enough to not schedule a large press conference unless they knew what they were going to do ahead of time.
2. His daddy wanted kids at Harvard and Stanford.
3. His coach said it was unrealistic for Pitino to land him since Stanford had been recruiting him for 14 years...

You're ripping on people giving high school kids attenton on message boards, while doing the same thing?

For the final time, just so you can understand: People aren't pissed at RT because he didn't pick the U. The are pissed because of how he handled it.

No hate or love for the kid....he just made a choice. I just don't give a crap about what becomes of him moving forward. Reid could've been a HUGE face for this program and loved locally for the end of days. Instead, he'll always have a negative image in MN. I'm not saying that is fair or proper but it is a fact. Just say the name "El-Amin" and you'll get what I'm talking about. It was almost "Lebron-like" today and that is going to leave a very bad taste in people's mouths, right or wrong. I still want him to be successful in life, though. It just won't mean anything to me as a fan. The way this all went down was very awkward to say the least.

Stanford is not an elite school. It is ultra-elite.

It is Harvard, but with big time D-1 athletics.

It's alumni base is probably the wealthiest, per graduate, in the world.

Yeah...but their jerseys don't say "Minnesota" on them. :)

No, they aren't. They are pissed he didn't pick the U. They are cherry-picking other reasons to beef at him. Get over it.

I'm guessing his NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RING gives him solace in the face of the horror of a bunch of Minnesota people bitter that he shunned them.

The world is a big place. Minnesota is a great place. There are also lots of great places outside the borders.

Reid Travis is no Andre Hollins but hey not everybody's perfect. Also he will decommit after Stanford loses to Bucknell tonite. LOL

I have spent some time around the Stanford hoops program, been to many practices, etc. I hope this kid realizes that he will be playing in front of 2,000 actual in-the-seats, sleepy fans and for a coach who has his walking papers. This is a terrible basketball program and a very, very bad basketball staff... the only saving grace for him would be the staff getting canned... maybe that is what he is banking on, but obviously a risk. Great school, lovely weather, etc... but this is not a place to play hoops if you want to develop and have a great hoops experience in college... an incredibly strange choice if you ask me.

I just don't think I'll be ready for a long time again to actually get my hopes up of landing a top 100 recruit. I'll just assume Rashad, Jarvis, Illikainen, Ellenson, and Thomas will choose some other school no matter what unless I see the words "Gophers" mentioned or uttered from the player himself.

You're dead wrong. People will always be disappointed when in-state kids don't pick the U. People will be disappointed when Tyus announces he's going to Duke or Kansas. But check the board afterwards, there won't be nearly this type of anger. RT didn't just pick Stanford. He completely disrespected the Gopher fans and coaching staff.

I know nothing about Reid Travis other than watching him play basketball at a high level. I do know that on Tuesday evening @ Williams Arena in came Reid Travis with what looked like his younger brother(?). The students cheered for him and he acknowledge their cheers. He was demanding of the basketball team mangers during the game and then after the game he went down the stairs towards the Gopher lockroom I assume. This was a kid that owned the arena. That was Tuesday and then on Thursday this 17 year held his press confernace announcing his decision to go to Stanford. The way he acted on Tuesday at Williams Arena and then shunned the gophers was a classless move. He shoud have never come to the Barn on Tuesday and asked for all the attention. I could care less about this kid. You people on Gopher hole act like you know him. You don't know him he is a classeless kid who thinks everyone owes him something. Just anothing puke of kid who everyone treats special, becuase he is a good basketball player. I could care less if I ever hear his name mentioned again. Pampered atheletes and their parents suck!!!

Could care less about his ring. For all we know, he could have won one here with all his talent. Doesn't change the fact that nobody here gives a crap about him. I don't lose any sleep over these decisions but the fact is Reid's choice will have negative repercussions for him here in MN, right or wrong.

Why didn't you share some of this inside info?

If you could care less, you would.

Wish him luck. I hope he can handle the rock, with the three middle fingers he gave us today.

Clueless PL guy here again. But if you're a smart, talented kid, can you think of a reason NOT to go to Stanford? Really? I suspect that we (LU) lose much lesser prospects to Stanford on a regular basis. For a gifted kid, I can't imagine a better place to go.

Blown away by how so many people are reacting. Truly embarrassing.

Embarrassing how? Fans feel rejected. This is a message board that has Gopher fans bashing one another on a daily basis. I certainly don't agree with the name-calling and insults for Reid but he did set himself up for this a tad. I do hope he has success in the future but could care less either way ultimately now that he spurned the U.

The name calling and personal shots at a 17 year old kid are embarrassing. Did he give fans false hope? A little bit yeah, but I'd argue fans and people on this board created a lot of that too. It's not like Reid flat out said he was coming here then changed his mind.

For the record, any malicious jabs at Reid are unacceptable. He made his decision...I just hate the way the last week unfolded.

If Reid was a local kid going to Stanford on a math club scholarship, I'd congratulate him on a great choice.

But being that he's a basketball player with NBA aspirations, it's a choice that smacks of "name brand choosing" rather than wisdom. Or knee jerk choice based on a little snow here this week and a very big Stanford national tv football game on the eve of his decision and possibly some extra lobbying from Coach K once he knew he was out. Either way, as a fan it sucks to lose a 5* local kid to an INFERIOR team. It's hard enough fending off the Duke's and Kansas's of the world, now we're losing recruits to f'ing Stanford?

Stanford basketball = 0 NCAA tourney appearances in 5 seasons under Dawkins and crew. That's FIVE SEASONS to establish your style of play, get your recruits, etc. The verdict is already in on Dawkins. He stinks.

But hey, at least Travis will get some nice NIT experience, and can occasionally be on the "Pac 10 Network" when the rest of the country is sleeping.

In my opinion, I think that he had choose the Gophers before he had set his announcement date but than he had a bad week this week and changed his mind. All signs pointed to him picking Mn. He had a great visit, he was at the exhibition, he was shadowing classes, he invited gopher fans to his announcement. I think that he changed his mind because he was underwhelmed at the exhibition game and because of the snow and cold that we got this week. My first thoughts when it cold and snowed was oh yeah this is why I hate Mn if I had a chance to leave I would. Also Standford's great football game they had last night may have swayed him a bit.

The reaction in the other thread shows he made the right choice. You can't shower a kid with love and then when he decides to further himself off the court elsewhere call him all different kinds of things. I've known him since he was a little kid and he's always been a nice, smart and very polite kid. Disappointed he's not staying home but he's been a Stanford lean for quite some time. Also considering the state of the program and the fact we have a new coach with very little experience it would of been a miracle if Pitino would of been able to get him. The fact that Reid gave the U such a chance at the end should be looked at as a positive. Pitino will do great things here with time but people need to be patient and supportive first.

This would make sense if Dawkins had the Stanford program in good shape. At the very least, the fact that Dawkins has had five years and hasn't done anything with the program should cancel out Pitino's lack of experience.

This is like me saying he should have picked the U because both hockey programs are so good.

Well, I guess you can take solace in the fact that RT doesn't care what you think.

Where was all this sanctimony when people were ripping Oto for having a terrible year last year, or Mav a couple of years ago? "Thou shalt not say anything bad about any basketball player, for lo, they are but children." And all this for ripping that is probably more tame on the whole than any other fanbase would give in similar circumstances. This is big time college athletics, people. Put on your big boy pants.

Sure he does. Athletes, as well as people, generally want to be liked. He basically said at the press conference that I hope Ben Johnson is still my friend. No one wants to be spurned and hated by the community they grew up in.
