Reid Travis Press Conference Notes - Likes Pitino's style, felt at home at Stanford

I'm disappointed. He seems like a great kid whom would have been a great ambassador for the program during his stay here. Having a kid like RT here would have only enhanced the program with other recruits.

I'm selfish because I care.

We are sick of hometown kids spurning the U. Love to see Pitino over achieve this year. Forever and proud to be a University of Minnesota fan!

Reid Travis: *
This was arguably the toughest decision I've had to make in my life. *

I have no bad blood for anyone at MN, and hope that there's none for me.

There wasn't a clear cut number 2 choice, two schools were tied for 2nd.

'there wasn't a clear cut second choice'? What does that mean? ' Well Minnesota fans, you actually were my "last" choice?'

In what "bad manner" was this decision made? I'm not following.

Invite people to his 'local' decision? Did he clarify who should be there? Did he know how many Gopher fans (#WeWantReid) followed him when he made that vague tweet? Did his appearance at the Gopher scrimmage a few nights ago or his Carlson class shadowing hint to his leans? When did he know that the announcement would be made in the media room as compared to the school gym? Did he know, or even consider that due to his tweet, that the majority of people who showed up would be Gopher fans? Did he understand that they would be waiting in line not only to be turned away at the door, but to also learn soon after that their optimism was misplaced?

In conclusion, when did he actually know that he would be attending Stanford? It's easy to say that the decision "just came to him" conveniently the night before. I think he strung the local folks and fans around, and these past couple weeks were nothing more than theatrics and hype building. Yes, the decision was made in poor taste.

did he comment on the giant middle finger he gave to all Gopher fans today?

I am very hurt by Reid's choice, but it is the biggest choice in his life at this point. If he wants to go to Stanford, then all the power too him. Stanford is a good school, as is Minnesota. No hard feelings towards Travis and hope he does well in life.

It doesn't really matter since he has made his choice, but I am more thinking in line with GuyFawkes reports. I think he was set on Minnesota, and someone talked him out of it.

He said how comfortable he was with the Stanford staff when he said the exact same thing about the Minnesota staff only a few days prior.

It is his choice and he made it though, I hope the Gophers make him regret his decision from a basketball perspective every single day and I hope Pitino ends up producing more NBA players than we can count. I don't hope for Travis' failure one bit. I just hope the Gophers have far more success.

Possibly. And I don't hate on RT for choosing Stanford. I simply don't believe that he didn't know his choice prior to this week. I think we all can agree that RT is a very smart and well spoken kid. Someone like that doesn't put themselves on the clock to make a split second decision before they 100% know where they want to go. It's this reason why I think everything this past week was nothing more than deceit on his part.

Look, you don't care about sports that much. That's fine. You share that with most of the sports media in this town. I'm happy you've been able to achieve such a level of emotional distance that you can cheer for everybody to be Super Winners and everybody to be one big dandelion chain of good feelings and warm fuzzies, singing kumbaya on the basketball court. But some of us choose to come to this board because we love the U basketball program, and want it to win. So losing out on a player like Reid is a blow to us. I'm sure Stanford and its fans are sharing your hopes and dreams for success for Reid and the Stanford basketball program. If you're disgusted by our reaction, I'm sure that board would be far more congenial to you, and I urge you to seek it out.

I like the part where you make sweeping assumptions about me just because I'm not going to hold a grudge against a 17 year old kid.

I'd love nothing more than for all of our Gopher teams to be the best in the nation, do nothing but win, and make it look easy. But what good is holding a grudge going to do? Do you really think a few nutjobs on a forum are going to sway future recruits? Do you think they're going to see the reactions on GopherHole and say "Oh god, better not choose someone else. I'd hate to anger those fine folk!".

Big difference between holding a grudge and saying that you will not be rooting for RT and Stanford to be successful. He didn't show any allegiance to the UofM so why should we show any allegiance to him? He's just another college basketball player that doesn't play for the team that I care about. Good luck.....no hard feelings.....but I could care less about his career now.

The opposite of love is indifference. I love my gophers. Reid who?

Stocker nailed it. I'm not expecting recruits to fear my ire. But this is about competitive sports. I hope no Lehigh players are laboring under the assumption that I'll be doing anything but cheering for them to fail tonight. It's the nature of sports fandom. And there's a difference between "not holding a grudge," and cheering for Reid to have "an incredible career." If my assumptions were incorrect, I apologize. But it certainly appeared that you were condescending to Gopher fans.

Oh, I was absolutely being condescending to Gopher fans. The difference is that I was being condescending to those fans who are acting like this is in any way a slight against the University or its basketball program. The amount of "Reid strung us along", or "he screwed us" kind of posts on this forum is frankly absurd.

Like I said, I love all sports, and Gopher sports in particular. I pay for tickets when I can go, I watch live when I can't go, and I watch replays if I can't watch live. But if this is how some of you react to losing a recruit, I can't even begin to imagine how horribly you must handle a speeding ticket.

That's a common theme the many times this has happened, will happen next week and may happen next spring. It's like we are trying to convince ourselves these high school kids give a sh*t what we think.

Maybe it's therapeutic.

Nobody thinks he screwed us. Nobody said that either. Reid is a smart kid.....he knew where he was going and he saved it until today. Fine....but I don't buy for a second that he figured it all out last night. Look at Andrew Wiggins. He declared when the time was right....when he knew exactly where he wanted to go. No media attention despite being the number one recruit in his class. Reid knew where he wanted to go and strung the Gophers along. No reason to make an announcement if there is no drama to go along with it.

I know that they don't care. It's some posters here that think that since they are in-state kids, that we should support them wherever they go. Why the heck should we?

Im glad you are supporting your friend. He isn't my friend nor the friend of most on this board. If this was the "support reid" board, then your opinion would be reasonable and appreciated. Since this is a Gopher Fan Board and your friend just spurned us...the reaction by our fans is reasonable and appreciated. If you prefer, start the Reid Board and gain your following, but don't tell me how I should feel and react.

Reid is dead to me and I hope that his Coach is fired and he never sees the NCAA while Pitino leads our Gophs to a final four. Lastly, I hope he comes back in 7 years with his degree and gets beat out for the job he wants by a U grad that didn't shun his hometown team. The grass isn't always greener.

I could not have said it any better! Reid who? Don't let the door hit u in the ass

I think the quote he made about his parents being able to say they had a kid go to Harvard and Stanford was quite telling. Obviously he respects his parents a lot, and by all accounts his father wanted him to go to Stanford. My interpretation is that he was torn between MN and Stanford, and at the end of the day he followed his dad's advice. Obviously his dad was paramount in his young (and very successful) life to date, so it's hard to blame the kid for following his dads advice again.

And about trolling the Gophers - I find it hard to believe that he's the type of kid that would troll us just for hype. Certainly we feel trolled as the home-state, but come-on, the kid is 17. It would take a really ballsy person to hang around the U all week if he was CERTAIN he was going to Stanford. I believe him that he was torn, and at the end of the day I think he just followed the advice of his father. Nothing wrong with that.

Don't know if this is true or not but by "Gophers" you mean fans of the Gopher basketball team if there was stringing along Gopher fans were willing participants.

You underestimate kids. Especially those who have had this kind of exposure at a young age.

I hope travis reed enjoys his time at samford when he could have played at home with a coach who will be here in 2014 unlike the dukie at samford. What coach doesn't tell a recruit that he will be his coach for all four years? Hope samford loses every game this year.

Did you watch his announcement. He was nervous but you could see how much he was loving it. He made this a big deal and loved every second of it.

This. You don't set-up a press conference and hope you can make a decision in time. He already knew he was going to pick Stanford.

As for the people defending RT, he just disrespected the Gopher program more than anyone in a long time. He created media hype so that people were interested in the press conference and his decision. He took an official visit and attended the scrimmage 3 days ago to troll you along so you would be interested. He did all this for the sole reason of getting you to care about him and his decision. If he hadn't done this, his press conference would have been in a room with about 10 people, because no one else in the state would have cared if the Gophers weren't a finalist. He showed him self to be a complete narcissist.

Ha. The idiocy here is laughable.

If I'm right, the idiots here are part of what I hope is simply a vocal (and small-minded) minority, not reflective of the Gopher fan base as a whole.

An 18 year old kid made a decision to go to a WORLD CLASS university and he did it with a reasonable amount of thoughtfulness and respect. Tout the U of M all you like - it's fine - but it's not even in the conversation academically with Stanford. It's just not.

As hard as you may find it to believe, Reid Travis made a decision that will best serve his future. He didn't make his decision based upon pleasing a bunch of whiny ass Gopher fans who he doesn't even know and would be quick to rip him to shreds if he didn't produce to their standards.

Good for him. He's a wise man, who presumably won't spend his post-graduate years ripping the college decisions of high school seniors because they chose not to wear their colors.

You obviously aren't understanding the issue. It's not that he didn't pick the U, it's the way he went about it. He had no intention of coming here and played the fan base.

Stanford is no comparison to MN academically but the announcement was way over the top. Totally inappropriate

It's very obvious that the decision was EDUCATION BASED. Not basketball based. In that sense, he definitely made the right decision. However, by nature, I hope Stanford Basketball has a miserable next few years. However he does in his college career, guess it doesn't matter to me either way.

How is everyone here such an expert on Reid Travis' college decision?
