Don't tell me that doesn't turn you guys on.. =D

This was my e-mail to him

"Mr. Maturi, I know you are a busy man and I will keep this short.

Thank you for everything you do at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to share with you a quote from this 60 minutes special on Mike Leach. You can watch the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYqsiq0iQC0

'He was competitive with the heavyweights with a middleweight budget and a fraction of the recruiting power.'

I understand this is one simple report, but I hope you give this candidate a serious look. He brought Texas Tech to the second best team in the nation. That is your instant credibility.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Go Gophers!"

This was my response. Pretty quick too.

"Thanks for the input. We will do our best to find the right coach for the Gophers.

Joel Maturi"

I was wondering...

Do you suppose Joel knows that a huge majority of the people who are so politely sending these emails with coaching suggestions are also on this board daily calling him a blithering idiot, a complete moron, a pathetc failure, and are also calling for HIS firing?

I sent my email early this morning and got this response around 1:45 pm:

Thank you for your suggestion. This name has come from several other fans as well. Right now, everyone is on the “list” as we are just beginning the search process.

Appreciate your support.

Joel Maturi

Why did u quote me when u said that? Haha. Did u not notice my disclaimer thanking him for all he does? If u look at my post history I wouldn't say I am negative toward Maturi. I have said he needs to wear the fact that he got dooped by a guy who had no business being a Big Ten head coach. That's not negative it's the truth

Even if this e-mail campaign doesn't work we can sleep easy knowing we let Maturi know what a majority of the fans think

I love how people think that an AD is going to hire a football coach because rubes on a message board email him. If that's the case I'm going to email him and ask him for 50 yard line seats. Maybe he'll throw in a new car as well....

While I agree this sounds ludicrous in principle - this is the same Maturi who admitted one of the reasons he made the Brewster move was because he didn't want to hear booing at the games. This is also the same Maturi who admitted that the fear of a negative media backlash caused him to suspend Royce White during the bogus laptop investigation.

Point being - Maturi has shown on multiple occasions that he lets these kinds of things influence his decision making.

Best post on this thread.

Whoa!

"...we let Maturi know what a majority of the fans think..."

Speak for yourself. I for one think Mike Leach would be a disaster. There are AT LEAST as many fans opposing his hiring as there are supporting it. We can do better, and will.

You got any data for that? There is data that suggests a lot of people on the 'Hole are in favor of him. Check out those polls. I am sure that Leach would be acceptable to more than a handful of folks who didn't happen to select him as their top choice.

Yeah where is this phony data that shows as many fans do not want Leach?

If they hire Leach fine, but to somehow contend that a majority of fans on a message board is a representative sample of Gopher fans as a whole is a bit of a stretch.

Is it any bigger of a stretch than every media outlet calling Trestman the 'fan favorite'? We need a grass roots campaign to offset the media big dogs.

As of a couple miniutes ago there were 57 votes to hire Leach on the lastest Gopher Hole poll.

If your sampling size is 113 people I guess that would be a majority, but some how I think there are more Gophers fans than that.

Unbelievable

Okay. I'm not against Mike Leach, but someone is going to have to convince me how he's going to turn the program around. And why there should be an entire campaign around bringing him here.

One thread started with us needing him to come here and bring back 10-11 win seasons. But,from what I've read, he's only had one 10+ win season in his entire head coaching career.

If that's his track record in Texas, how's he going to improve on that here, and win more games than he did there?

Again, I'm not against Mike Leach at all. Maybe I just need to be sold on him as someone that can come in and turn the program around, compared to other coaches that may be available?

I'm not telling people not to e-mail Maturi. I just think the notion that the whole fan base is going gaga for Leach is a bit of a stretch.

This board is a very thin slice of Gopher fans.

If I could choose any coach in the country, Leach would not be my choice. But of the coaches that I think we have a reasonably good chance of getting, I think he is our best option. Why?

He has a history of prolonged success as a head coach at a big football conference. Nothing wrong with Golden, Sumlin, etc. but their success is not over as long of a period and we just don't know that it will transfer from the non AQ level to the BCS conf. level.

Over a ten year period, he never had a losing season overall, and only one losing conference record, 3-5 in his first year. His overall record is 84-43 (66%), but here is the kicker... His success isn't due to cupcake schedules. His conference record, remember this is in the B12 south, is 47-33 (58%).

His offense is so dramatically different than anything else in the Big Ten that every week defenses will have to basically start from scratch as far as formations and looks are concerned.

While Leach may not be the worst choice and a definite upgrade, I think I may have to start a "No Pirates for Gophers" facebook page.

Just not the right guy, IMO.

There are no guarantees with anyone we hire, the best thing you can do is look at their past record in an attempt to project future success. I am not quite sure why someone would have to convince you more thoroughly with Mike Leach than any other candidate? Fans like Leach's offense and quirky personality.

Run down the reasons please.

Run down the reasons please.

#1- He doesn't look like a program builder. He took over a TT program that was already a good, establish program. Sure, he did expand on the success and brought them up to a BCS contender FOR ONE YEAR.

#2- His success as a coach is only slightly better than Glen Mason's at MN.

#3- I think he may have character issues, which is exactly what we don't need right now.

I think there are coaches who are as good or better on the market that have a history of building a program and don't have potential character issues.

Sumlin comes to mind, but there are others.

Yeah, his 58% conf winning % is the same as Mase's 40%. Leach's WORST conference record was 3-5 and he did that once. Over a 10 year period Mase went 3-5 or worse 6 times.

And Mason never made the Gophers #2 on the AP Poll... Leach did for TTU.
