Post Game Thread: Buckeyes Comeback on Gophers Keeps Undefeated Season Alive

Washington gave up 24 points to Ohio State last week. Ohio (MAC) gave up 37 points the week before. Our defense isn’t a big asset this year. Hard time stopping opposing offenses, and simply not producing turnovers. I think we have one turnover in our four P4 games. Seems to be talent — but the poor tackling is really amazing.

Drake didn’t throw an INT and nobody fumbled. Actually a positive sign for our offense against this defense. Good to have DT back, but he didn’t look good. Slow. Lingering injury problem? Fame looked better and, for now, seems to give us a better chance to win.

How long will the Special Teams curse burden the Gophs? We have a field goal kicker who can’t make a kick outside of 40 yards. That is insane for a team that will have to win some close games to have a decent record. Our guys clearly weren’t coached up for Ohio State’s trick play punt return. We don’t do creativity, so hard to practice against it.

Bold: that might be because we only had 26 passes and 25 rushes.

In defense of our players and coaches, I have no idea why Ohio State chose to waste that trick play punt return in this game when the game was clearly in hand. That was very well designed and executed....save that for a high leverage situation.

It was for their fans in the stands. Night games are a big deal for them. They weren't having as much fun as needed to that point. All was well after that.

Doesn't make that a smart call in any way. But for example coaches go for it on 4th down at times really due to the fans in spite of what the card says. Same deal.

And classless when you’re kicking the shit out of a team in every phase

Maybe, but thats no excuse for our players and coaches.

Unless you think "dont worry about any trick plays, tOSU wont need them against us" is effective coaching.

Sometimes you put it on tape so others worry about it and it opens up something else.

I get that for trick plays on offense. But not really sure that applies to this one. Is what it is but I would have kept that one in the bag to use in a future game.

They can't use it now? Opposing coaches never ever imagined a trick play was possible on a punt? Never coached their special teams it was possible? But now it'll never work?

Good lord.

Agreed—teams are allowed to have fun. Wondering, also, it if was a bit of a message about losing the Perich recruiting battle. “This could have been you!” I cringed when I read the Saturday Strib story—more fuel for the Buckeye fire.

I expected to lose, but obviously was hoping for a miracle. Was frustrating to me how much trouble we had with the snap. Against OSU, sometimes they are going to get a big play because their receiver is faster than anyone on our roster, their quarterback put the ball in a perfect spot, and there is nothing we can do. That's the reality of where college football is at right now and I get that. Getting the ball from the center to the qb is something we can control. I was at least hoping to see us be competitive enough to feel like "if we met them again in single game elimination CFP, a few key mistakes by them and us making a few huge plays might give us a shot atthe upset." Unfortunately, the way we looked made it feel like we could play them 100 times and lose all 100.

10-3 still in play.
We were all upset that the game wasn't more competitive last night and upset with some of the decisions. (And some of the awful reffing)

But the fact is that we all pretty much had this game and @Oregon as losses as soon as the schedule was announced.

It counts as 1L in the standings.

More realistically, I think 8-4 can be a fine regular season and get us to the Music City bowl

On the cfb subreddit the OSU fans were saying that it was likely a wrinkle that Day wants future opponents to waste time planning for and that they'll probably never do again. They didn't think it was bad blood or intentional poor sportsmanship or anything like that, there's no open knowledge of any hostility between Day and PJ.

This legitimately made me laugh.

It is something I could totally see PJ doing, too.

Gets up in front of a team with a bunch of old film stuffed into a barrel, lighter on hand. Drops it down, bursts up into flames.

The shadow of the flames flicker on his shining bald head. Just stands there staring at everyone, not saying a word.
"Don't learn anything from this game guys. Remember, we're not hear to improve, but just to have fun."

People need to realize that coaches from youth to the NFL put in plays to stay fresh, keep players engaged, and trick other teams.

At this level the difference of 1-3 players going to cover that guy creates a huge advantage either way.

Great design, call and execution.

Would love to see our Special Teams coord come up with something!

Doesn’t bug me that they did it i just would have saved it for a more high leverage situation. I don't think showing it will cause teams to alter their coverage much other than to make sure their gunner on the far side of the field stays home and makes sure their outside guy isn't doing something fishy.

They executed it perfectly so kudos to them.
