Post game notes - Pitino praises Elliott, loves yelling at DeAndre, and meets Reusse

Who was the point guard that had the ball stolen from him by Mo? I couldn't believe that play. That was street ball. No way a Big 10 point guard should get the ball stolen like that.

I loved it. But if I was Pitino I'd be thinking "What the hell is he doing?!" I'm sure there were some jokes behind the scenes about Mo wanting to guard out on the perimeter next game. That could have just as easily been a reach in.

Speaking of Mo, he actually played with some fire last night. I loved his reaction after his And-1. If Mo can keep playing like that, we'll have ourselves one hell of a duo at center.

Mo seems to be gaining confidence. He has a long ways to go but the improvement is amazing.

Back to back and 1s. He was huge (no pun intended) for us at the right time in the game.

Interesting watching him. If somebody pisses him off, they can get the quick hook. McNeil lost the ball the first time on the court and was walking to the bench right away. Pitino got in his face and was making a gesture like, "hold on to the damn ball!" Not that long after, McNeil was back out there. King seems to experience this often. Funny when Pitino pulled him and simply pointed to the bench in disgust. Joey quickly sat and it looked like we were going with four guys. He had to jump back on the court so Oto could substitute. Don't know what the rule is, but Matta was watching. Pitino seems to have the personality to do the quick hooks and yet not hurt the confidence or lose the players.

Spot on. I love how he lets the players play their game and gives them the confidence and freedom to do their own thing, but the second they screw up they are on the bench - and not in a "miss a jump shot" screw up, I mean something mental.

I also love how, if there is a defensive breakdown, it's usually an immediate timeout. He doesn't look at the clock and say, "well, we have a tv timeout coming in 2:12, I'll just wait and talk about this then."

Yeah, I really liked the timeout he took after Austin allowed that backdoor lob. He used it as a teaching moment, but also a dunk like that could've given Ohio State some big momentum and a quick timeout helps alleviate some of that.

I'm excited to see the players actually develop under Pitino. It's been so frustrating seeing a good squad just break down as they went toward the post-season instead of improve. It will be fun to see how individual players continue to improve and hopefully we see that in the Hollins duo as well as continue to see EE develop as well as others like Deandre. I just can't believe how fun this team is to watch even if you want to pull your hair out sometimes. This will be a fun team to watch for years to come, we should be solid with the play of EE and Mo inside this year and some of the new recruits next year. And with good consistent wins like this we should see some returns in recruits for 2015. And they said they couldn't run and press. Pitino must have smirked every time he heard people tell him it couldn't be done in the BIG. We'll see how it plays out against Wisconsin though.

Any doubt Wally Ellenson transfers after this year?

Wally won't transfer, we have to good of a track and field program for him to leave, if anyone leaves it's Buggs, Wally won't go down a peg in hoops to sacrifice his promising high jump career

Remember when this board was filled with posters who said Elliot wasn't a B1G player and should transfer?

Well, as a general rule, posters on college BB forums (including me) don't know much about what they comment on.

I'd say a better chance he drops BB and concentrates on High Jump. Especially if he can get a full scholarship from track.

I think because of track, Wally will stay at the U and continue to play basketball. I think he'll realize his future is in track, but that doesn't mean he can't become a solid contributor in basketball by sometime next season or his senior year. Sure he may not be a star or even start for us, but he does have skills and is a great athlete, which should be enough to make him a valued contributor.

I think Buggs hangs around too, just a gut feeling.

I've always been a supporter of EE. He was a two time mr bball in Nebraska and big guys always take time to develop. Unless you are getting a 5 star center, you are probably going to have to be patient.

I wonder how Colton Iverson would have developed under Pitino.

Elliot's the biggest whiner in the history of gopher hoops.

Very true. But to be fair, he gets screwed by the refs more than any Gopher player I can remember. He didn't even touch the guy on his 3rd foul today.

That is blatantly false. Clearly his arm hair brushed him on his layup attempt. If that's not a foul, I don't know what is!!

I am not sure how colt would have done with Pitino as we have very little post up options currently. Colt was a defensive lliability in pick and rolls so when he was on the floor you wanted him to have the ball on the block where he was difficult to stop. You also need a coach who would have the kahunas to go after the refs for screwing him on call after call. I think Pitino can adjust to the players, but I also think he likes more mobile players for his uptempo style.

Scratch that comment, it was pre Mo comming out party against the badgers. Mo was on fire and Pitino made sure we got him the ball. What an adjustment! I am too happy. I think Colt and MO are similar players physically, strong, poor lateral quickness, limited jumpers. I think Colt had a better motor though. Let's hope Mo can improve as much as Colt did before his senior season.

Mo has softer hands and is a much better shooter (especially at the line).

Was that the one where he hacked the guy from behind?

And then complained about it...

Mo improved immensely from last year to this year. He has also improved a lot from the beginning of the season to now. With the huge weight loss and new body, I have to believe Mo will keep improving more than Colt by next year.

What's next?

I wonder how Kevin Payton would have developed under Pitino?

Just listening to Zulgad and Souhan on 1500 . Said the problem with Tubby wasn't that players didn't improve, it was that they went backwards and or left.

They said it, not me.

I have mixed feeling son this topic. One the one hand you can say Tubby wasn't developing players, but on the other hand players develop when they become upperclassmen. People wanted Damien Johnson's schollie revoked. There were literally posters here who said we should just yank his schollie, although we'd never done it before. Then, he matured as an upperclassman & was a great Gopher. People wanted Colt off the team so badly, but then he went to Colorado St & played very well. Was that because CSU was so much better at developing his talents or was it that he was an upperclassman now (and playing lower competition)? People here cheered when Justin Cobbs transferred. 2 years later he was one of the best Guards in the Pac. Maybe we should have given him a chance? Posters here were certain, absolutely certain that Elliot would never bee a capable player in the B1G. As an upperclassman he's blossomed. Posters here were certain that Oto would never contribute anything to the program and was a wasted schollie. Now as an upperclassman he's a solid contributor.

Football is not much different. Remember Ryan Collado? Fans said he wasn't a B1G player and wanted him to transfer. As an upperclassman he was very good. That same attitude that any player not starring as an underclassman is disposable & should transfer is why I think fans may regret Phil Nelson transferring out in football as well.
