Pitino's Weakness

I hope nobody gets a hold of my wedding video. I'd be hard pressed to explain the shoe drinking.

same here, I have tried. The more you explain the worse it gets. it must be a "been there, drunk that" sort of thing.

My biggest concern at this time is how the system will translate in the Big Ten. Against the lower tier teams his uptempo game will be fine but what happens against the top teams? When teams force us to slow down how effective will the Gophers be in the half court. Tubby's teams looked pretty good when they got out and ran and forced turnovers but once teams slowed us down we were lost. Will Pitino's system in the halfcourt be effective?

I have no doubt his half court offense will be better than Tubby's because frankly it couldn't get worse but how effective will it be?

I'm confused as to who "us" and "we" are. You first refer to Tubby's teams as "they" and then jump into "us" and "we." Did you play on the team?

All kidding aside, I think you have some very valid points. Tubby's squads looked darn near inept at times trying to run an offense in the halfcourt. I am hoping Pitino's system allows for more versatility. You're simply not going to be able to run against all opponents.

Is there really some awesome Pitino wedding video I'm missing out on?

inexperience

Can we let him coach a few games in the Big Ten, this thread is unbelievable (but totally enjoyable). This thread is so like a future 'I told you so' whine.

I would love to be him right now after reading this thread. I would have a smirk on my face ear to ear and say to myself, 'we'll if the expectations are only this, what great great fun I will have proving everyone wrong and actually start stacking wins.'

Sorry about that. Let me clarify.

I thin the reason he go the job is because his last name is Pitino. The point I was trying to make is that, in comparison to Collins, the two both come from a basketball family. Collins can sell the same thing. His dad has not accomplished as much as Pitino Sr as a coach (but was a better player), but they both come from good bloodlines.

Collins is not meant to be the point of the overall post.

can't make it up. this dude praises the northwestern hire of collins in part because "Plus, he is also the son of a prominent basketball figure." you do realize that our coach's father was just elected to the basketball hof and just won a national title. is that prominent enough?

I'm resisting any urge to watch the wedding video. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt ("it was her big day, I geeked out for it, let her do whatever, played along with the dumb video stuff, etc... but now she lets me do what I need to when it comes to coaching basketball, so it's give and take").

For 2013-14, one concern I have is how well he'll draw the line between promoting the idea of "if you're in position to put up a shot, go ahead and take it" and "if you're in position to put up a GOOD shot, go ahead and take it." Providing a long leash, but knowing when to give it a little tug. "Let's push the tempo, but don't be stupid."

I'll be ready to judge his performance at Minnesota in a few years, maybe 5. I think he'll do well with the program.

With the right personnel in the right condition, mentally and physically, for the right pressing D you pretty much can. We don't have the personnel to pull that off yet. I do think Rich will find and recruit enough of the right players. 2 recruiting classes.

Can he close the deal on recruits? I hope so, but my biggest fear is that we'll be on the list of the top guys but they'll all eventually choose other schools.

Recruiting targets are individual. Short term, 2014 will be exciting or disappointing for people, but the question to be answered by Pitino is how well can he brand the program from a recruiting stand point.

Give it some time (i.e. years).

I guess I do not understand the twisted mentality of some GopherHolers who are already talking about weakness of a new Coach when we don't know anything yet. Instead of looking at negatives, life is more fun when we look at things from an optimistic point of view. But, then again, what else is new?

GO GOPHERS!!!

GO GOPHERS!!!

I must have left before that happened. Destroy the footage before it's too late!

This thread is what are Coach Pitino's weekness. Maybe it should be what are his strength's. We have a coach with one year of head coaching experiance form a small division one program. Our AD who is alot smarter than everyone else decides that this BIG TEN program should hire him, because he is YOUNG and he has a nice last name. We are promised that he will do a good job of recruiting with alot of enthusiasm. The proof is in the pudding. It looks like we may have to start Otto this year at power forward with no decent recruits on the horizon. Please YOUNG Pitino please prove that the EGO known endearingly as Norwood was right in giving you a chance to coach at this major program in the big ten. At least when Maturi hired Monson he had a proven track record???? What can we say about this hire? He needs to step up and land some big time recruits. As a season ticket holder I am very concerned. At least we will have a good record going into the Big ten season unless Cardinal Stritch college turns out to be tougher fow than anticipated.

It's already happening. Plus once the Big 3 start signing elsewhere some will start calling for his head.

All I know is this: We are legitimately in the mix for Rashad Vaughn, and we would not have been if we hadn't made the change and hired Rich Pitino.

That is a preposterous statement!

And he's a friend of Sid's!

Who knows what Pitino's weaknesses are, or for that matter his strengths. To date, he has not proven anything, good or bad. There is almost always a bump in recruiting from a coaching change. Look at what Tubby did his first full year here. We had the #17 rated class by some sites. He won 20 games after the prior year we had a total of 9 wins; however, look what happened. I think it will take some time to figure it out, especially when we have a coach with a grand total of 1 year head coaching experience.

Words of wisdom.

Which is one more year than Northwestern's new head coach.
