Here are my quick notes from the post game presser and player availability:

Oto Osenieks:
On Joey King - Hopefully he'll be alright, he's a tough kid.*
Coach Pitino told me I don't need to worry about my offense, it will come eventually if I play good D
Last year I played the 3, so people were much faster than me, now at the 4 I'm much more comfortable

Austin Hollins:
We finally got some energy and intensity, that's what helped us pull away.
We needed to get back to playing defense.*
I think I was trying to attack a little more, we got more out on the break in the 2nd half.*

Andre Hollins:
I'm feeling alright, I think it's just a bruise on Joey King, nothing too serious
Feels good about 900 points...we need to do a better job defensively
We have to give them credit, they got shots, we didn't finish them off, we did do a good job of getting them out of their offense.*

Elliott Eliason:
There was a lack of defensive effort, that was the story of the night.
We have to come in tomorrow and work our butts off. We need to sprint out if we press, myself included.
At halftime Pitino talked about how disappointed he was with the effort, he expects a lot more of us
We need to work on Communication - it was my fault a few times in the zone, I need to be quarterback.*

Richard Pitino:

• It wasn't a great performance defensively, but we got the win. I was worried about having a letdown after the Richmond game. We just need to learn from it, we've got one day prep for Wofford. We'll address the immediate defensive concerns, we'll watch film tonight and work on that tomorrow.
• We're going to wait until tomorrow, we're not sure what it is just yet, hopefully it's nothing too serious. But yes, we're undermanned especially in the front court.
• CCU made good plays, I just didn't like the energy, I didn't think it was great. I wanted them to know that we need to tighten everything up.
• They were good in practice, but I was concerned with the mental lapse. They have been professional and mature, but sometimes it's tough to get them going on certain nights. I don't think their effort was bad, it's just that their mental sharpness wasn't great.
• Mathieu should always be able to effect the game, he can always bring something because of his speed. We sped them up, we didn't do a great job after that.
• On Oto - he should be very confident because he's playing really hard. I think a lot of that is that he knows he's going to play, so he's going to be much more confident.
• Elliott and Oto are playing really hard. Elliott played 34 minutes, we could have used Joey King.
• I don't plan on playing Elliott 34 minutes a game, it's because Joey King got hurt. But I do worry about everything, that's the way it is as a coach.

Glad to hear they were all disappointed in the defensive performance. Can't let that culture set in.

That' something I noticed right away, I feel like Pitino is really teaching them, as they all knew what went wrong and were very hard on themselves after a win...which I hadn't seen a lot in the past.

He also talked about how hard it is mentally this time of year - many good teams narrowly escaping defeat (and some not escaping) so while he holds them accountable he puts it in a broader context. I like it.

Very good offensively in the second half, balanced scoring, good effort from everyone, CC shot a very good percentage for the game, those stats don't lie.

To wit, Duke escapes East Carolina by 9. Wisconsin gives up 85 points to North Dakota. As I squirmed through this game I imagined the Duke fans squirming through theirs.

They were due for an off night, but the defense has been bad all year. Just hope they are making adjustments to the schemes.

A few observations:

1. Team looked very chicken-with-head-cut-off in half-court defense at times. Played zone nearly the entire game and CC repeatedly found the soft spots with us chasing.

2. Mathieu is quicker than hell. He also is a high effort guy. Only 2 TOs and a LOT of pushing the ball and "going into the trees."

3. Dre Hollins tossed up a few Oto 2011- March 2013 bricks after the collision. I hope he's ok.

4. Oto had a couple bricks of his own, but canned another beautiful 3, made 4-5 FTs (nice touch) and 3 other FGs. Played great. A little scare as he came out hobbling, grimacing and grabbing his knee. Must have knocked knees, because he was back in after a couple minutes.

5. Not quite as active in half-court offense. Felt a little more Tubby-ish in the first half. Better in the 2nd half.

6. Press was ok, but when broken CC got tons of easy looks - probably what it looked like in the first half of Richmond game. Elliot accepted some blame there in post-game comments.

p.s. No time again for Buggs, despite really needing a body after King went down. Not good for him..........or us. I'm wondering if he'll ever contribute.

He made a pretty awesome dunk in the Gopher Intro video.

HA! That reminds me, Austin had a spectacular put-back dunk in the first half. He keeps surprising me this year with his athleticism.

Mav 3 min

Wally 6 min

Mav had one horrendous ball handling moment and I don't think he saw the floor again. Wally looks like a good basketball player until he gets the ball. Ball movement slows down and he looks unsure. Did make one baseline shot. Malik Smith has been disappointing so far. If he's not chucking up a 3, he really doesn't do much. With all the crap aimed at Oto, people were really relieved to see him back out. Surprise of the year so far. King is the second one. Would be nice if at least one more guy stepped up. I'm still thinking Wally might.

As I've stated in the past, I think our biggest weakness is the bench behind our 3-guards.

Of course that is with EE, Mo, King and Oto all being available.

We have 3 games in 3 days coming up in Maui. The starters are not going to be able to log 32-34 minutes per game for 3 days.

I would guess Wally also. Trust 7, play 8?

OMG your so right...kid is in his fourth game of his career and isn't breaking records. We should pull his scholly immediately. He is just never going to be any good.

Good lawd, some people on this board are clueless.

They really need Wally to contribute come Big Ten time, I thought he looked decent last night, Austin plays better when he gets a bit of a break, I just don't see Smith contributing at the 3 when the competion gets tough.

Your getting a bit carried away here GP. Buggs has had a full redshirt year to improve his game and have something to contribute. No one is expecting 30-35 minutes a game, but a few minutes here and there to spell a starter should be expected. Not one moment on the court against a team like CCU is a bit concerning. Hopefully, with Coach Pitino, Buggs can identify the individual skills he needs to work on and ultimately he can become a solid player, but obviously Coach doesn't see him as a contributor at this time. Let me say it again, Buggs had an entire redshirt year to work on individual skills. What happened? Do we conclude that Buggs may not have much to contribute or do we conclude that Tubby did a terrible job of working with Buggs throughout last years redshirt season?

Jake was simply wondering if Buggs would ever contribute. You jump all over that question and insinuate that people are calling for his scholarship to be revoked. Do you see where you might have over reacted just a bit???

mental lapse???? Did anybody tell Richard that in GH mental lapse is called bad coaching???? Also, sometimes it is called throwing the players under the bus????

Go Gophers

So you're the new Barn Burner huh?

Four undefeated games into his first season and we have people on the warpath after the coach. We knew that the cult of Tubby was going to have a vendetta against Pitino, but even this surprises me. This is going to make the GopherHole a crappy place to be in many respects for a long time.

Agree with a couple others regarding Ellenson. In bits and pieces he's getting better. Still needs to relax and play & get some confidence. I was surprised he played so few minutes last night. Thought we'd see him more in the second half. It's going to take some time, but I think we're going to need him against the better competition.

Hoping Wally avoids the whipping boy mentality that lotsa' folks used last year on Oto.

I wonder how many people are still going to want Pitino to send Oto packing after this season?

Agreed. It becomes more and more clear everyday who the Gopher fans are/were and who the Tubby Smith fans are/were.

I don't like the mindless criticism of Tubby, but also can't stand the unbated "This never would have happened under Tubby! I love Tubby! Tubby, Tubby, Tubby!"

It's fine to disagree with his firing, but taking joy in the team you supposedly cheer for not being perfect is a bit questionable. Why should anyone be happy a team has flaws? Unless you really don't like that team or have an alternate agenda. Some seem downright giddy every time the Gophers aren't perfect.

Well put. We're 4-0. We have some things to work on. The future looks bright. Go Gophers.

I have no problem with him putting Wally and Mav at the end of the bench. I don't believe Wally can shoot at all & we all know who Mav is.

I'm surprised Buggs can't contribute just for defense and rebounding. I wonder if those stupid three balls he launches are the reason coach can't trust him.

McNeil has been a scratch 3 of the 4 games, should have red-shirted.
