*** OFFICIAL GOPHERS-PURDUE GAME THREAD ***

And Andre Hollins is being projected as a possible lottery pick as well.

What ridiculous expectations? I expected us to beat Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern on the road, and Illinois at home. I expected us to beat teams we were better than. Why is that so ridiculous?

1) LOL @ the notion that a severely undersized 2 guard is a lottery pick. Maybe in two years, but he's nowhere close right now.
2) The "ridiculous expectations" part comes from the fact that you think Andre and Austin are as individually talented as Gary Harris. The talent on the team is strong, but let's remember that Andre, Elliot, and Joe are still sophomores and Austin is still only a junior.

Even Monson was able to get Humphries. Getting D1 talent to come to a D1 school isn't rocket science if you have the right guy. And even if you can't get the talent, get a system and fit the talent that you can get to it. Slow the pace down and recruit shooters.

Tubby isn't getting it done right now. Even if he is such a great recruiter (he's not), what the hell good have his fabulous recruits done us? What good have the millions we're paying him done us? If mediocrity is what we're destined for because Minnesota is the worst job in the world (which you seem to think), then let's scale down to a more appropriate price tag. Or pay for someone else who has a chance to take a fresh approach to a program that has stagnated.

There is a foundation here that you can build on. It is not impossible. You just have to find the right coach. Once we start winning, all the good things this university have going for it will look all the more attractive.

Just out of curiosity, what is said foundation?

So you don't disagree that we should have beaten those teams? That's interesting. Because if we would have beat those terrible teams we would be 13-5. You do know that it is very possible that the winning record in the big 10 may be 13-5?

Not so ridiculous now is it?

And if we lose games against Indiana, on the road at Illinois, and at home at Michigan State, we're back down at 10-8. You upset teams and get upset by teams. It happens.

But again (because apparently it wasn't clear the first time), the "ridiculous expectations" comment stems from the fact that you think the team's individual talent is a lot better than it actually is. Gary Harris is pretty far ahead of Andre and Austin right now.

Andre Hollins can't play the point because he scores, it is why Kemba Walker will never be a lottery pick and will never start in the NBA. Nolan Smith won't get drafted. Kyrie Irving belongs on a bench somewhere.

An "undersized" two guard or to put it nicely, a scoring PG. There are none of those in the NBA ...

We were favored in all those games but Indiana and Illinois and Illinois was in a tail spin at that point.

If you just compared Andre's skillset to Kemba Walker and Kyrie Irving, get the f&%k out of here. Those players are ten times the ballhandler Andre is. They also have a far better ability to create their own shots.

Tournament appearances, being ranked, talked about nationally, some exciting players, NBA draft talk,

It's not wild success, but I'd say a foundation.

Fair enough, then you could say almost every majot conference team has a foundation, correct?

We were favored in all those games but Indiana.

Being "favored" in college basketball is not something you should point to. Using betting lines to determine actual skill level doesn't work. There are many reasons for Vegas to set a line outside of the actual talent level of the teams.

To some extent, yeah. A new coach here though would be taking over a team ranked 8th at one point the season before. Not many open jobs could claim that.

Agree with that point, but as I think we may have discussed before, Andre Hollins is not the player that Walker or Irving is, wouldn't you agree...

I'll agree it could be one of the better open jobs, but I still dont think that Nationally it is a top 25 or 30 job. Top 40-45, but just not that great. Combo of history, facilities, success all plays into it IMO...

Stop making sense.

Okay, that's where I end this discussion. How else do you determine upsets? By your personal opinion? Get outta here.

Easily top 30, only D1 school in a state that has been producing D1 talent at a very good clip for some time.

It's to bad the fan base is built on bandwagon fans.

Newsflash! All fanbases are built on bandwagon fans. You think that many people would still be rabid diehard fans of Kentucky or Duke basketball if those programs went through decades of mostly mediocre to terrible play like Minnesota has? People want to support a winner. And when that "winner" starts to lose most fans go elsewhere.

The opinions of everyone going into it. Vegas isn't the only entity that determines upsets.

For example, before Miami caught fire they were playing MSU at home. MSU at the time was clearly the better team (experts and analysts agree). Vegas had Miami favored by multiple points and made a ton of money on the game because everyone said "haha that's dumb MSU will kill them."

Vegas' agenda is to make money, not tell you who is the better team.

Kentucky had plenty of fans jump off the bandwagon in the later stages of Tubby's tenure through Gillespe. It happens everywhere.

College BB fans that follow the Gophs (not mn fans) are laughing or crying right now. I work with wisky and iowa fans and after each ridiculous loss, some laugh their ass off, some feel my pain, and others ask how much longer can they count on tubby being the coach.

Your assertion is laughable.

Not sure it's that. But at Kentucky, you can give them the 'Tubby stare' and you'll get calls. That doesn't work at MN. He's never bothered to adjust.

Now that you mention it, I don't recall seeing the Tubby stare much (if at all) this year. Used to happen 4 or 5 times a game in the past.

This should be the end of smith, he has no idea of what it takes to motivate these young guys... And why is his dumb ass kid even on the payroll along with the rest of the loser coaches he has... Minn is an embarrassment. Gotta find a new team to follow. Iowa State with Freddie H is a fun choice !!!!

Yes because he's going to leave is alma-mater for Minnesota.
