Official: Big Ten is going to a conference-only season, playing 10 games

Good old Wren from Winona, he was a real fan of Gopher Football and I miss him a little... or maybe a lot

I travel to Winona and La Crosse for work and I sometimes think of the elderly Wren when I drive in on 61. As an longtime fan of the Gophers I always thing of Wren when I drive through for work, or when I hit the city on a 2 or 3 time a year motorcycle tour. I think Wren has ties to Cotter HS, so he probably lived on the north side. I miss Wren and hope he is still with us.

Wren went to both of the Sun Bowls if I recall, he was a true supporter.

He may be gone, but not forgotten by me at least. I secretly hope he is in an HC home and still reads this board and was able to see the Auburn game on 1/1/2020.

Hey Wren if you are still out there, please posts ASAP!

Do people really think the conference would rig the schedules to purposely favor a certain team? I don't think that would fly with every other team in the conference.

Gee golly aren’t you precious. The conference needs big tv numbers now more than ever. They’re going schedule to their advantage.

Just like the NBA:

“When the season was shut down, the Pelicans were 28-36, which put them 3.5 games behind the Grizzlies for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. They would have had some major ground to make up down the stretch, but with an easy schedule and Zion Williamson's arrival, many thought they had a real chance at pulling it off.

Now that we know their schedule for Orlando, that feeling remains the same. The Pelicans have the easiest schedule based on opponent winning percentage. In fact, at .495, they're the only team out of 22 with an opponent winning percentage that's under .500. They'll play the Jazz and Clippers to start, but then finish up with the Grizzlies, Kings, Wizards, Spurs, Kings and Magic.

All told that's six games against teams who are under .500, just three against teams currently in a playoff spot, and only one against an actual contender...”

You just pointed out that the Pelicans had an easy schedule to end the year before covid and now will still have an easy schedule? Genius.

I was only talking about one game. It's not like they would make a big annoucement "Oh hay guyz, just so you kno, we're giving Illinois to Ohio State so they don't screw up the CFP. Looolllllz! Kthx"

Well they’ll probably need to make it know to the public how the games were selected. I guess they could lie.

Now the whole thing is scrapped and starting from scratch. So in that case, yes you're correct, they probably will need to publish their criteria for making the schedule.

And as I think others have mentioned, I think they will try to keep a geographic portion to it.

For football, it would be absurd to try to limit it to bus trips.

1) all football teams charter their own flights. This is done even at higher end of FCS, let alone P5. So there is no risk from that. Air on planes is constantly filtered through hepa filters. So it's probably less risky than having the team in buses for 10-20hrs each way.

2) in the far west, there are going to be only a handful of trips that are less than double-digit hours per way. For Minn, it's probably around 4-4.5hrs per way to Iowa and Wisc. Neb I'm guessing more like 6.5-7? Probably 7-8 to NW. 8 to Illinois. Everything else is double-digits. Maybe you squeak into Purdue at just under 10?

BTW - one of the reasons for dropping the non-conference games has to do with testing and health and safety protocols.

According to the B1G big-wigs, for conference games, they know that all teams will be following the same protocols for testing and reporting. Other conferences may have different standards. that makes non-conf games more problematic. If school X has a different testing protocol, what happens if school X plays a B1G team and after the game, says, "oops, we had a bunch of players test positive after the game."

that is what the B1G is trying to avoid. by playing conference games only, they have more control over testing, reporting, and the health and safety procedures for each team and each venue.

I think that if a little bird planted seeds of an all Big Ten schedule in the commisner’s ear, even if for just one season, the bird would have been a “wren...”

My brother & I made the trip to Tampa and cheered the Gopher on to that fantastic win over Auburn. And we cheered the Gopher in the BEST game ever in TCF BANK Stadium against PSU!

Still alive and feeling well. As ugly and fun loving as ever...just 50 pounds lighter. Hoping to be around for a bunch of Gopher Football seasons to come. Just call me: wren lite...

Remember: a Big Ten Coach is as good as his Big Ten record says he is...

All BT games all the time every year. Beat the stinking badger & the equally foul Hawkeye Gopher !

; o) Wren

That was supposed to be: “...the commissioner’s ear...”

The Winona Wingnut has surfaced.
Welcome back if it truly is you.

The Billds were in Tampa and TCF for PSU too.

Great time to be a Gophers fan.

The Winona Wingnut has surfaced.
Welcome back if it truly is you.
It is me: wren aka renegaderambler plus several other monikes I have used over the decades. Only, for the past six years my lovely bride And I
have resided in a condo in Rochester. Got tired of the yard work, snow blowing duty and keeping the pool clean In “ river city...” Still have fond memories of Winona and will always support my favorite little school system with a bit of financial support for their auction and several other academic supporting fund raisers. “...once a Rambler: always a Rambler...”

Wing nut? If you say so I suppose you Are entitled feel what ever way you feel. What ever makes you swell up and feel like somebody just go with it. I’ve been called worse by other fools. What a fool believes really doesn’t bother me a bit. Talk at you later Plato...or was it Pluto? Never mind....

Maybe I'm just too stupid to get it. Or I missed something somewhere.

What is the benefit of cancelling NC games? How does that make things safer?
I'm not sure it really does, we really don't have statistics on COVID and athletics and sometimes reducing "some" exposure..... really doesn't lower risk.

I think this is more a move to delay the season and have more time to decide what to do....

Just a little test to see if it is the real Wren. Tone is good but grammar, punctuation seem too good.
Time will tell.
If Gopher Lady would allow Rupert back from exile then the band could start up again.

Glad you two are doing well. Wayne.

Mrs Bayfield and I decided to dump this season tix which will be a huge change for us. But us old farts have to so things differently these days.

Don't let those bastards get you down???? Well, maybe this season but we hope things will be better in 2021.

Bringing up Rupert definitely confirms you are a badger troll.

Bay field! Nice to hear from you. I don’t have my season tickets any longer. Night games and travel distance and a prostate the size of an Irish potato makes it easier to watch most games from the comforts of home. Those long lines and all the folks I have to say pardon me to in the isle I sit in to make still another trip to the concourse relief stations helped me to decide that a few years ago. But fortunately, my younger brother took up where Ileft off and became the proud owner of three Gopher season tickets. So, the athletic department is better off without me!
My brother is kind enough to bring me along upon occasion and he and I have always made Gopher road trips and bowl games a great wayto spend some time together. Some brothers hunt...some brothers fish, but my brother and I hit Gopher Football games honor family ties
.

My “Big Ten wins matter the most...” philosophy Does allow me to always appreciate what Warmath, Stoll, Mason, Kill, TC & the Staffers, and now Fleck have brought to Gopher Football. That amazing game and win over PSU finally showed me the promise of Gopher Football returning to the EAST BANK and how powerful an experience it can create. My brother and I didn’t take the field with the crowd after the game, but we stayed to watch that miracle take shape, expand and then explode on that beautiful East Bank stadium field and incredible twenty first century Mall and academic institution that has played such a vital role in the history of and the shaping of the state of Minnesota!

And: I must admit that as the GOPHER held off Auburn during the final quarter of that bowl game and that close to 10 minute drive the offense had to take the fight, will and spirit out of that remarkably STRONG Auburn team provided me with my MOST memorable quarter of GOPHER FOOTBALL ever.
It was punctuated by the chant from the stands wearing maroon and gold: “...ROW THE BOAT...” repeated over...and over... and over again.

I was a skeptic...I made fun of that slogan and my anger with the U of M administration for the way many Things had been handled. Shame on me...bad on me...foolish of me. That
“R0W the BOAT...” cheer at that game in the waning moments of that fourth quarter taught this “old dog”: “new tricks”

Be well Bayfield. Spend time doing great things with your beautiful bride and family. I’ll try to do the same.

NEVER let the bastards get you down...BEAT the stinking badger, GOPHER and the foul smelling Hawkeye too!

The Auburn fans after the game were in shock. We spotted them 10 points and still delivered a beatdown. Priceless.

Saw this today, interesting take by Mark Rogers. He thinks Big Ten should make rivalry games home and home series for this season. That'd mean two games against Wisconsin instead of adding another opponent from the east. Another note, he has us playing OSU in the championship. RTB!

Interesting for sure. Harbaugh would probably sh*t himself having to play OSU twice in the regular season.
