FWIW, HS kids might just make their college choices based in part on the system employed by the college of their choice. And some kids are better fits for different systems. A player who fits best in Fleck's system may not fit so well for Wisconsin, or vice versa.

So it's not just a matter of recruiting the best athletes available. it's also about recruiting the best athletes who fit your system - and want to attend your school.

And that is part of the recruiting process - selling the recruit on the idea that they will fit "your" system better and be a more productive player than they would if they went to School X.
Plus one

Latest recruiting measures as of today. Wisconsin - 3rd, Iowa - 5th., Minnesota 9th., Northwestern 11th. Somewhat disappointing. We all thought PJ would shine as a recruiter, apparently not.

I guess that's one way to spin it if you're trying to be negative.

Instead, I'll look at the five 4-stars (7 if you go by 247's own rankings) PJ already has committed in this 2021 class. If you're actually a Gopher fan, you'd gladly acknowledge that is unprecedented around here.

I believe Fleck has 9 of the top 25 rated recruits of the Internet era. 5 in the class of 2021. I could be wrong but its something like that.

Kill and Claeys landed a total of... (checks notes) .... two 4-stars. One was born in a Minnesota uniform, the other was Jeff Jones. We've got a good shot at tripling that number this year. I, for one, am needed to put on sunglasses.

Lots of folks live in a negative world. Going by the 247 composite ratings for individual recruits, we're currently sitting at 6th in the B1G with a 87.82 rating. For this time of year and with what's happened in MPLS over the summer, I'll take that.

Due to Covid, did several of the recruits even play football this year? I know the QB recruit has not played in the last two years, as he injured his left shoulder last year and was out, the year before he got a stinger.

Are those ranking based on a cumulative score/points (which signifies the total number of recruits) or the per recruit average ?

Big difference IMO.

You haven't been following things very closely have you? PJ is shining as a recruiter for your information. Missed out on a couple guys he would like to have, but I don't believe it was his fault they went elsewhere.

You ever think that maybe there are more 4 star recruits in 2021 then there were in say 2014. My guess is there were some 4 stat recruits in prior year but no one had heard of recruiting rankings or at least not to the 24-7 way it is now. Plus high school kids are training like pros now. I can remember pushing a car for conditioning training and I graduated high school in 2005.

I hope so cause his recruits are playing on defense and on the offensive line and those spots are not exactly going swimmingly right now.

We have already discussed this a ton on this board already, but Fleck's first recruiting class was largely keeping recruits committed and only bringing in a few recruits. The next class he only had one cycle to recruit. The Empire Class helped Fleck have a great year last year and that helped Fleck to shine. A true representation will be what we see in the next two years as Fleck's we get rid of the "year zero" recruits.

The defensive struggles have been well covered. Lots of young guys with a messed up off season and some key injuries to boot.

But WTF are you talking about in regards to the O-Line? Playing without two key Fleck recruits in Dunlap and Faalele we still have one of the top rushing offenses in the conference right now. They had a rough game against Michigan with 5 sacks allowed but in the 4 games since have given up a total of 6. Feels like you are reaching for something to be negative about.

Don't feed the troll. It's not humanly possible for someone to make such a silly post unless they're trolling

I’m not trolling. They play well against mediocre defensive lines. They have been out classes by both Michigan and Iowa this year. Maryland, Illinois, and Purdue are not exactly known as defensive stalwarts with great defensive lines. Would have been interning to see what they could do against northwestern and Wisconsin. They were also out classes against Wisconsin and Iowa last year. They did a great job against Auburn though. Hopefully some consistency with a line coach will help both the recruiting and the play going forward.

as far as losing players every team has lost players. Northwestern lost their top left tackle to opting out.I hope both Dunlap and Falalea come back, but who the heck knows what the 2021 football season will look like.

Time will reveal a large part of how well recruiting went. It will measured by wins and loses.

The person is not making sense.
It's as if he buried his head in sand, and dumped cow manure on top of himself just to prevent himself from smelling anything logical before framing that argument.

And so far PJ has looked REALLY darn good.
Like REALLY REALLY good.
Won a lot of games already. Won by some very large margins as well.

He wasn’t known as a recruiter like Brewster was. Yes he recruited well by MAC standards, but I think most were cautiously optimistic about how that would translate to the B1G. Anyone who says we were sold more than what Fleck has delivered was unrealistic and based their expectations off very little. Fleck has definitely elevated recruiting, but so has much of the rest of the conference. Wisconsin, Iowa, and Purdue have put together some very strong classes that have ranked higher than they typically land.

We also only have 16 committed right now. Nebraska for example has 19 and are ranked 4th in the conference. Our average * ranking on 247 is 87.82 and theirs is 87.39. As a result if we even sign some middle of the pack 3* guys we should jump a few teams.

Guessing by the time its all done we'll be around 7th.

Yeah. The recruiting thing is important from the standpoint that you can compete...
But the difference between the 2nd or 3rd best class in the big ten and the 8th is 3-4 guys being seen as better or worse than 3-4 other guys.
meanwhile the 3-4 guys may or may not be good fits for the system they entered.

You have to be good enough at recruiting to be in the mix and then you have to develop the talent you have better than others.

I thought it was dots that mattered, not stars?

Obviously what I'm about to say is not a great way to look at it either .... but, if you divide 22 starters by 5 classes, that means each class just needs to produce 4-5 "star players" per class. Of course that would be 4-5 true freshman starting every year. So 5-6 "star players" per class, with no true freshman ever playing and the 22 starters being spread out over the RS fresh - RS senior classes.

But of course, we know that modern teams rotate players and play multiple "starting" personnels on offense and defense, so there really isn't such a thing as only needing the starting 22 anymore.

Drop a turd then leave. Just like always Pete.

2017 "starters" or "high contributors" in 2020:
Andries (OL multi-year starter ... Claeys MN recruit)
CAB (WR3 starter last year and WR2 starter this year -- might be main target now, if we play any more games .... Fleck brought over from W Mich?)
Paulson (TE contributor in 2018 & 19, some injury issues last year, another Fleck W Mich?)
JMS (starting center and rotated in last year, very talented interior OL, fleck W Mich?)
Tanner Morgan (this is all Fleck, brought over from W Mich)
Ryerse (starting K (right?), Fleck W Mich?)

2018 "starters" or "high contributors" in 2020 (or would have been):
Dunlap
Faalele
Bateman
Teague
BSF
Oliver
Rush
MSM
Aune

(last three guys I don't think are great, but they're what we've got due to the situation)

I'm not sure I'd define "stars" as "true freshmen who start". That seems like a really big ask. I'm not sure even the top programs regularly have 4-5 true freshman starting every year.
