JD - we missed a good one to Nebraska.

He could have joined his team mate Carter. Was it because he wanted to play a certain position that NE offered and Minny did not?

Assuming you mean Minnesota, we did offer.

His questions was did we tell JD he wouldn't be playing a position the NE recruited him at.

I know nothing on the situation other than the guy played offense and defense and there was speculation that we didn't see him being a WR.

He wasn't a high priority. We already had 3 committed WRs that we liked just as much or better.

Debatable

Spielman was a definite take for us and yes, he did like the prospects of how Nebraska would be using him better than how Minnesota would.

I don't really agree that he was a take for us. Already had two slot type receivers committed in Howard and Snelson. Doubt they wanted to take 3 in one class with how many young receivers already on roster.

Kill also seems to like bigger WR too, you know it's a good year for in state recruiting when the 8thish best player in the state has BCS offers and goes to Nebraska

I talked with a couple of school administrators from Southwestern Minnesota at a conference the other day and they raved about Drew Hmielewski, especially his raw athleticism. Probably some of that was local pride and they did admit that he's so much better athletically than the kids around him that it's difficult to get a true read on how he'll fare against tougher competition. But they all said it's been quite awhile since they've seen a kid like this out that way. He's supposedly something else on the basketball court as well.

We would've accepted a commitment from Spielman but the staff is happy with their WR commits regardless.

per Shama:

Carter Coughlin hasn’t given up on Eden Prairie High School football teammate J.D. Spielman changing his mind about playing for Nebraska. Coughlin has verbally committed to the Gophers and hasn’t been bashful about encouraging other high school prospects to follow him to Minnesota.

Coughlin committed to his home state school last winter, while Spielman announced for Nebraska this summer. The two Eden Prairie teenagers are captains and buddies. Coughlin told Sports Headliners he was disappointed to learn Spielman chose Nebraska over Minnesota but he understands and respects the decision.

Still, that doesn’t mean Coughlin has lost interest in seeing Spielman sign a National Letter of Intent with the Gophers next winter when high school players can make official commitments. “I make hints every now and then but for the most part I am not drilling him too hard,” Coughlin said.

Spielman likes how the slot receiver is used in the Nebraska offense, so that’s provided an opportunity for Coughlin to promote Minnesota and its slot specialist, KJ Maye. “Whenever I am at the Gopher games and KJ Maye makes a play I always take a video of what he did, or whatever, and say this is you out there, or something like that,” Coughlin said. “He chuckles, but that’s pretty much the most I do.”

Eden Prairie is 6-0 and considered the best prep football team in the state. Spielman has been an extraordinary game changer and headline-maker with long runs and touchdowns. He is a headache for defenses with his ability to run and elude tacklers on rushes, pass receptions, punts and kickoffs. Opposing offenses see plenty of Spielman too when he plays in the Eden Prairie secondary where he is a continual threat to intercept passes and run them back for touchdowns.

“J.D. has been making a ton of plays,” Coughlin said. “He’s got like the most incredible vision of any high school player I’ve ever seen. The way he can minupulate his body (is special). Before you even know what you’re going to do, he knows what you’re going to do. It’s pretty incredible.”

This is accurate. Most of the teams they play are either a class lower or not very good.

Left tonight's game with a shoulder injury. The team dominated No. 4 Tri-City United 34-0 (TCU is one class lower). 7-0, No. 4 in Class AAAA.

I would think this increases the chances we take 2 QBs in the '16 class

Saw him against Albert Lea, Scored on a deep bomb first play from scrimmage and he ran a punt back where all 11 guys bounced off of him. Marshall had 5 or 6 guys besides him that I think could atleast play D2. Wouldn't be shocked to see them in the Prep Bowl

Be interesting to see how good they really are if they end up play Hutchinson in their section.

Tralund Weber picked up an offer from Oklahoma St. and may take an OV... bummer if it happens, we really need someone who can rush the passer.

This is the key. Hutch is playing well. Not overlooking Waseca either. Last year, Marshall handled them in regular season but lost the matchup in sections.

As for the talent, RB is leading the state in rushing touchdowns as a sophomore and LT just got his first offer from Northwestern. There are others as well. Not ready to proclaim Prep Bowl because their competition is mostly weak, but a section win over Hutch would go a long way towards easing those doubts.
