Official 2016 Recruiting Updates Thread: Links, Tweets, Videos, Stories, Rumors, etc.

naw it was the WI RB. Wanted to flip but staff told him no. Apparently they didn't think he was better than the RBs they had committed, at least not far enough ahead of them to bring him in at that point. We'll see. None of the incoming RBs blew me away from what I've seen. Of course I realize that what I see is just a few highlights and I'm not the one comparing their film to 100 other RBs or accurately factoring competition, potential, etc so I'm not claiming I know anything for sure.

As soon as he committed to WI we "cooled" on him. That's why we didn't take him.

Huff is no longer visiting and said he is solid to Miami(OH) but Bailey Edwards will be here for the BBQ

The WR situation is definitely fluid right now. I'd love to be able to see the coaching staff's big board at that position currently.

So are we recruiting Phillip Howard as a receiver or defensive back? I've heard both

Sounds like his most likely position is WR, but we have worked him out as DB in the past and he'll be camping as a WR this weekend.

Would you guys think we would take an extra wide reciever this class? For example if Edwards and Fitzpatrick wanted to come here. Feel like it would be hard to turn down Fitzpatrick

Between Hmielewski, Edwards and Spielman, I think that at least one of them tries to commit this weekend. But that is probably our only possible commits this weekend for the BBQ. Its too bad we couldn't more of a presence from DL recruits this weekend, probably our biggest need for this class right now, DE being the Biggest

I could see spuelman playing either side of the ball he does for ep right?
On the latest Ryan Burns podcast he said with Speilman's size only about 5'9 he doesn't really fit real well as a DB prospect for Sawvel so it seems more likely he would be a WR.

Minnesota offered Texas CB Antoine Winfield Jr today. Was clocked at 4.27 at Ohio State camp. He grew up with JD and Carter when his dad was a viking and is very good friends with them.

I believe they are recruiting him as a safety.

Actually sounds like he is going Basketball route and the staff doesn't have him as a priority anymore. He likely won't be a gopher. He also had some academic concerns.

That would be disappointing as I really liked him as a DB prospect but it really wouldn't surprise me at all. I've always kind of had the feeling that he would rather play basketball and the thing that has made it a tougher decision is he is B1G level football prospect while as a basketball prospect he seems to be more of a mid-major type.

So a 4.55-4.6 when converting to non-fraudulent numbers, which is pretty good for someone who is 16/17.

Antoine ran a 4.27 and a 4.35 at the Ohio St. camp. I have watched him on 7 on 7 this spring and saw him play some as a junior. The kid is the real thing and Minnesota would be really happy to have him. He is a hard hitter and a really smart kid. I have heard that his mother would really like him to attend Northwestern but his stock is rising quickly so if he gets an OSU offer I assume he would follow in his father's footsteps. Go Gophers!

My guess is we take the 1st to commit between Hmielewski, Edwards, and Spielman. We only take a 3rd WR if we get someone like Fitzpatrick.

I'm sure that everything else you say is true...but those numbers aren't real. Let's not pretend that they are.

What is going on the DT recruitment trail? Garcia is committed, but seem to get passed over by the likes of Panasiuk (MSU).

What is going on with Walvenski Aime from Fort Scott CC KS? He commited to Miami June 10, de-committed from Miami June 19, and recently got an offer from Louisville July 16. Love that he is 6' 5", 295 lbs. Did the Gophers cool on him?

DTs are in high demand everywhere it seems, and the Gophers are facing some stiff competition. I wonder if the Gophers can find a late bloomer who is under the radar this coming HS football season in MN.

We wanted either Pansiuk or Cross to pair with Garcia, but both went elsewhere. Aime is a JUCO, which isn't a real need since Richardson, Stelter, and Moore will all be juniors next year. On signing day we probably end up with 1 more DT, but it's probably a name we haven't heard yet.

This dang recruitin' game is like fishing. You either trust that you have presented the right bait on and you get an instant bite, or have plenty of patience (and beer) for the lunkers lurking in the deep.

By comparison, Coughlin's best time at OSU last June was 4.44. It's safe to say Winfield is faster than 4.6.

"The Ohio State camp went really well," Coughlin told Bucknuts. "I ran a 4.44 second 40-yard dash, which was my fastest time. The coaches didn't know who I was before I went in there as I really had no connection to OSU, but I definitely caught their attention with my 40-time."
