Official 2013 Gopher Fall Camp Thread: Updates, Analysis, Links, etc.

Some observations on the practice today-

We have 4 good QB prospects. Nelson and Leidner, of course, but I thought Streveler and Jones looked good as well. I would expect both to redshirt and gain a little weight. All 4 are reasonably accurate throwing the ball and quick on their feet.

Leidner is noticeably faster than he was in the open practices last fall or in the spring practices.

Drew Wolitarsky seems to be all he was cracked up to be. I doubt that he will start but I am sure he will not redshirt and will get a lot of playing time. He makes catching a football look like it would be the easiest thing in the world to do.

Most of the receivers have good hands. Wright seems to have exceptional speed and can catch the ball. He made a nice catch of a long ball with pretty good coverage and took it to the house. When he is in the game he will be able to create a lot of space for guys like Engel and Wolitarsky

Carter, Hutton, Maye all made some very nice catches. The guy next to me said McDonald made a spectacular catch but I didn't see it. I did see McDonald drop one though. It wasn't the easiest ball to catch but the three guys above were making catches that were more difficult.

Overall this team looks big and fast. They also seem to know what they are doing. During the spring Kill made an off hand comment that he thought they would be competitive in every game this fall. I am sure he is right. Overall, I think this is the best team I have seen in 30 years of watching Gopher football. I am sticking with my prediction of 8-4 mostly because the QBs are so inexperienced and young.

Keep the faith and GO GOPHERS!

Thanks for the observations. I'd say that "starting" is irrelevant. All these guys will get in the rotation, with Fruechte and Engle seeing the field more than most.

Thanks for the observations! I had forgotten about Devon Wright, it'll be interesting to see if he can make an impact at WR.

Good.

STrib blog: After top two quarterbacks, Gophers have to develop a No. 3

“Anything I can do to help the team this season,” Streveler said. “Whether it’s being a backup quarterback and just running the scout team, or possibly getting on the field at a different position — whatever helps the team I’m willing to do.”

Go Gophers!!

I didn't see the first two practices but I had a chance to watch today's practice. I couldn't help but think about how different they were from those first year practices of coach Kill - a lot of yelling and a little bit of teaching. Now there is very little yelling and whole lot of teaching going on. This is the most physical fit team I have seen at the U.

A lot of things were going on but a couple of thing of positive note that I noticed were: 1. A lot WRs were catches passes, 2. Nate Wozniak has very good hands, especially for somebody who is 6'9", 3. Andre McDonald seemed to be very much into the practice and caught a lot of balls.

I went today, I agree that jerry didn't do much yelling compared to his first spring practice, and I felt that there were not many completed passes

You are probably right. I was looking for quality catches from certain players such as Nate Wozniak and Andre McDonald. I was not evaluating the QB's or all the WRs but the hands of certain WRs.

Thanks for the correction and sorry about the misleading statement. I do feel though there is a lot more talent at WR this fall and it is noticeable. I liked Gray but last falls passing game with Gray was and is at a lower level than what I have seen so far this fall and this is only after three days. The Unfortunate truth is that Gray's skill set was not what is needed for the Maryland I. There is also definitely improvement in WR talent this fall just from Harbison and McDonald. It know it is certainly way too soon to say that we are where we need to be, but I think we can safely say that the passing game will be better this fall.

1500: Gophers' Tommy Olson adding intrigue to position battle at center

"Anything to get on the field I'll do it. Coach Limegrover told me to work at it and I did," Olson said Sunday. "The snapping part is pretty difficult, different steps compared to guard ... "It's coming along. I had a couple rough ones (today), but it's coming."

PiPress: Gophers football: Freshman Chris Streveler not a lock for No. 3 QB job

"Coming in the extra semester in the spring really helped me, but there's still a ton of stuff I need to improve on," Streveler said after Sunday's practice. "That's pretty much my mind-set right now, is to keep improving."

Streveler's biggest improvement this summer has been in size and strength. He went from 200 pounds in January to 220 entering camp in August.

He's still the fastest quarterback on the roster, with a 40-yard dash time under 4.5 seconds.

"I've always taken pride on being a pretty good runner," Streveler said. "But also, I'm trying to improve on my throwing game. That's something I obviously need to do."

Thanks for the link, Bleed. Once again, it is the young athlete recognizing the difference between his High School level and success, and what is needed at the D1 level to have success. Good luck to the kid, and I hope he helps the Gophers in anything he can do to make us more successful. Kill has it together as a teacher/coach.

Some observations on the practice today-

I did see McDonald drop one though. It wasn't the easiest ball to catch but the three guys above were making catches that were more difficult.

I saw all 3 practices and McDonald made several wonderful catches and is by far the most talented receiver athletically. This team is going to surprise a lot of people, even those on this site. I think 7 wins is a low estimate.

Sid: Hartman: Athleticism showing in early Gophers football practices

If you want my opinion about this football team, and I believe I’m as close to Kill’s operation as anybody, I think this team has a good schedule in its favor, with a chance to improve as it plays the early games. The Gophers play Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin at home and I’m confident they will knock off at least one of them.

So unless the Gophers suffer serious injuries to a key player such as defensive lineman Ra’Shede Hageman, the geniuses who picked them to finish last in their division are going to be proven wrong.

Even though we all have seen vast improvements year in and year out with the program, I think a lot of people on this site are still well grounded in their enthusiasm and for one good reason: the B10 schedule. No gimmes at home like Purdue was last year and still extremely tough road games. Low-balling a season prediction with 7 wins is bold - hope you prove a lot of people wrong!

Even though we shelled them, the Purdue game was far from a gimme. They took Ohio State to OT the week before at OSU and played Notre Dame tough at Notre Dame. Not to mention the whoopin they put on us the year before.

I like the way the interior DL is looking, Hageman, Botticelli, Ekpe and Johnson are all solid, with Legania, Peppers, Timms and Hinojosa pushing them, this should be a solid group.

Nice summary of the third day of practice by Norsk Gopher. Also I can tell you if Norsk Gopher thinks "Expendables 2" is a really bad movie, it is a REALLY BAD movie.

http://www.thedailygopher.com/2013/8/4/4588204/a-fans-day-at-gopher-football-practice#comments

Expendables 2 was awful.

From the article: "No way #39 Nat Wozniak redshirts unless he can’t block. So tall with good hands. Several times he, not the WRs went long."

If he doesn't redshirt, I think it will mean either that he's just really, really good or that Williams and/or Anyanwu are not as good as we thought. There's no way he doesn't redshirt if he's listed 5th on the depth chart.

It should be interesting to see if they redshirt Berkley Edwards. They really don't have a RB with his speed.

We shall (once again) dub him "Roland the Headless JOHNSON Gunner" . . . :)

R.I.P. Warren Zevon !!!

I understand DW (We called him Woli in HS) was moved from the frosh rotation to the 2nd team. No way he RS's. I sure would like to know what they feed him. He came into the summer at 208, been running his arse off, and recently weighed in at 225. Getting excited out west!
